JOHN DRYDEN AND THE LATE 17TH CENTURY DRAMATIC EXPERIENCE LECTURE 16 (C) BY ASHER ASHKAR GOHAR 1 CREDIT HR. JOHN DRYDEN (1631 – 1700) HIS LIFE: John Dryden was an English poet, literary critic, translator, and playwright who was made England's first Poet Laureate in 1668. He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the “Age of Dryden”. The son of a country gentleman, Dryden grew up in the country. When he was 11 years old the Civil War broke out. Both his father’s and mother’s families sided with Parliament against the king, but Dryden’s own sympathies in his youth are unknown. About 1644 Dryden was admitted to Westminster School, where he received a predominantly classical education under the celebrated Richard Busby. His easy and lifelong familiarity with classical literature begun at Westminster later resulted in idiomatic English translations. In 1650 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. degree in 1654. What Dryden did between leaving the university in 1654 and the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 is not known with certainty. In 1659 his contribution to a memorial volume for Oliver Cromwell marked him as a poet worth watching. His “heroic stanzas” were mature, considered, sonorous, and sprinkled with those classical and scientific allusions that characterized his later verse. This kind of public poetry was always one of the things Dryden did best. On December 1, 1663, he married Elizabeth Howard, the youngest daughter of Thomas Howard, 1st earl of Berkshire. -

Mijn idee was dat dit fenomeen niet alleen getuigde van een groei ende behoefte aan exotische ensceneringen, maar ook liet zien hoezeer zelfs in de opera de 'edele wilde' was doorgedrongen, die men nu ging con trasteren met een Europese cultuur welke niet meer vanzelfsprekend als absoluut superieur werd gezien.1 Juist in het kader van de vraagstelling van de onderhavige bundel leek het zinvol deze stelling eens nader te bear gumenteren, temeer omdat nu, in tegenstelling tot het begin van de jaren '80, voor het eerst ook uitvoeringen van althans enkele van die opera's beschikbaar zijn gekomen. Veelal denken mensen, ook cultuurhistorici, bij de zogenaamde 'barolc- opera' vooral aan virtuoze aria's gezongen door castraten, waarbij men op de koop toe neemt dat de intriges gemeten naar de maatstaven van het hedendaagse levenstempo toch altijd 'traag' en dus 'zwak' heten, en zich urenlang afspelen in ensceneringen die door moderne regisseurs dikwijls als ouderwets worden verafschuwd: zij achten dit genre eigenlijk alleen nog acceptabel indien het geactualiseerd wordt. -

Social life and occupational activities of the different ethnic groups formed the two main spines of how different the inhabitants’ garments would be. This study developed and demonstrated a step-by-step conceptual framework of narrative analysis. Scraps of Hope in Banda Aceh
Marjaana Jauhola Marjaana craps of Hope in Banda Aceh examines the rebuilding of the city Marjaana Jauhola of Banda Aceh in Indonesia in the aftermath of the celebrated SHelsinki-based peace mediation process, thirty years of armed conflict, and the tsunami. Offering a critical contribution to the study of post-conflict politics, the book includes 14 documentary videos Scraps of Hope reflecting individuals’ experiences on rebuilding the city and following the everyday lives of people in Banda Aceh. Scraps of Hope in Banda Aceh Banda in Hope of Scraps in Banda Aceh Marjaana Jauhola mirrors the peace-making process from the perspective of the ‘outcast’ and invisible, challenging the selective narrative and ideals of the peace as a success story. Jauhola provides Gendered Urban Politics alternative ways to reflect the peace dialogue using ethnographic and in the Aceh Peace Process film documentarist storytelling. Scraps of Hope in Banda Aceh tells a story of layered exiles and displacement, revealing hidden narratives of violence and grief while exposing struggles over gendered expectations of being good and respectable women and men. It brings to light the multiple ways of arranging lives and forming caring relationships outside the normative notions of nuclear family and home, and offers insights into the relations of power and violence that are embedded in the peace. Marjaana Jauhola is senior lecturer and head of discipline of Global Development Studies at the University of Helsinki. Her research focuses on co-creative research methodologies, urban and visual ethnography with an eye on feminisms, as well as global politics of conflict and disaster recovery in South and Southeast Asia. -

Blakemore1 Introduction Pirates are popular. Inside academia and out, the pirate is a figure command- ing attention, fascination and quite often sympathy. Interpreted in various ways – as vicious criminals, romantic heroes, sexual revolutionaries or anarchistic opponents of capitalism – pirates possess an apparently inexhaustible appeal.2 The problem with “pirates,” of course, is that defining them is largely a ques- tion of perspective: perpetrators of maritime violence from Francis Drake to Blackbeard have been seen as both champions and murderers, and scholars have interrogated this very dimension of piracy as a historical concept. -

VI.-THE SEVENTEENTHCENTURY, A.D., 1603-1714. A Jacobean Letter Writer : The Life and Times of John ChamberlaiPz, by G. D. Statham (Kegan Paul ; 12s. 6d. net). Chamberlain’s letters have long been known and used by historians as an important source of informationfor the last years of Elizabeth, the whole reign of James I. and the opening of the reign of Charles I. Those relating to Elizabeth were transcribed by Sarah Williams; those relating to James by Thomas Birch, and both have been printed. But Birch was a careless and arbitrary editor. Commander Statham has sketched Chamber- lain’s life, which was singularly uneventful, and has interwoven ample extracts from the letters, choosing those which relate to the less familiar events of the time and adding such historical information as seemed advisable. He has thus produced a book interesting and full of matter. The Irish Rebellion of 1641, by Lord Ernest Hamilton (Murray; 21s. net), adds yet another to the many narratives of one of the most tragic episodes of Irish history. Lord Ernest Hamilton writes from the Protestant, the Ulster point of view. He builds on contemporary documents, especially on the depositions taken by the Parliamentary commissioners. The difficulty in cases of this kind is to know how far the contemporary evidence can be trusted. Lord Ernest Hamilton rates the depositions high, while some of his predecessors have thought them little worthy of trust. The process of appraising evidence is one which cannot be reduced to rules and which no two persons perform alike, so that there is little chance of historians agreeing about the Rebellion of 1641. -
How English Baptists Changed the Early Modern Toleration Debate
RADICALLY [IN]TOLERANT: HOW ENGLISH BAPTISTS CHANGED THE EARLY MODERN TOLERATION DEBATE Caleb Morell Dr. Amy Leonard Dr. Jo Ann Moran Cruz This research was undertaken under the auspices of Georgetown University and was submitted in partial fulfillment for Honors in History at Georgetown University. MAY 2016 I give permission to Lauinger Library to make this thesis available to the public. ABSTRACT The argument of this thesis is that the contrasting visions of church, state, and religious toleration among the Presbyterians, Independents, and Baptists in seventeenth-century England, can best be explained only in terms of their differences over Covenant Theology. That is, their disagreements on the ecclesiological and political levels were rooted in more fundamental disagreements over the nature of and relationship between the biblical covenants. The Baptists developed a Covenant Theology that diverged from the dominant Reformed model of the time in order to justify their practice of believer’s baptism. This precluded the possibility of a national church by making baptism, upon profession of faith, the chief pre- requisite for inclusion in the covenant community of the church. Church membership would be conferred not upon birth but re-birth, thereby severing the links between infant baptism, church membership, and the nation. Furthermore, Baptist Covenant Theology undermined the dominating arguments for state-sponsored religious persecution, which relied upon Old Testament precedents and the laws given to kings of Israel. These practices, the Baptists argued, solely applied to Israel in the Old Testament in a unique way that was not applicable to any other nation. Rather in the New Testament age, Christ has willed for his kingdom to go forth not by the power of the sword but through the preaching of the Word. -

KONKANI’S OWN DEVANAGARl SCR1PT : THE JESUIT CONTRIBUTION by Mariano Jose Dias Explicit evidence to the effect that Devanagari is the natural script of the Konkani language, comes from none other than Jesuit sources in Goa, in the 16th century. This was dealt with by this writer in his article “Liturgical books in Devanagari Konkani”, in Renovaςão, 25 (1995), pp.203-204. The dynamic organizer of Jesuit missions in the East Visitor Alessandro Valignano (1539- 1606) was keen that Konkani language be learnt in its own script that could be none other than Devanagari, then called letra da terra. It is sufficient to recall what the chronicler of the Society Fr. Francisco de Sousa ( ? -1712) recorded in his Oriente Conquistado (Lisboa,1710) 2nd Part C.I. Div.II, 9, Bombay edition, 1886: "The Visitor ordered that eight scholastics learning Moral theology, be relieved from any other ministry so that they speak only in Konkani among themselves and the Rector ensured strict observance of this order: at certain time during the day they would practice by talking to local people and learn to read and write in the script of the place" (Ao Collegio de Salsete se applicaram este anno oito Irmãos moralistas ao estudo da lingua Canarina, tão necessaria para a cultura dos Christãos e conversão dos gentios.
