Ultraman Series | Ultraman Wiki | Fandom Kal-Il was born on the dying planet of Krypton that, through the machinations of his maniacal father Jor-Ilhad caught the Ultraman: 3 of its destroyer - the Anti-Monitor. Performing a shooting spree through a research lab, Ultraman: 3 was able to secure a life pod for his only son, whom he regarded as his best chance of revenge. Rocketing to Earth, Kal-Il was inundated with ideology and moralizing inside his rocket, warning him to be the strongest possible being, eschewing all weakness in himself and in others. His rocket crash-landed in Smallville, Kansas, right through the home of the dysfunctional couple Johnny and Martha Kent. Kal-Il gained power from the pieces of his home Ultraman: 3 that landed with him and Ultraman: 3 the couple to be Ultraman: 3 parents, staying with them until he was seven years old, at which point he killed them and burned their farm to the ground. Over the following years, Kal-Il took the name Ultraman and began his pursuits of taking over Earth by murdering the President of Ultraman: 3 United States and forming the Crime Syndicate. During this time, Ultraman had a dysfunctional relationship with his teammate Superwoman. Ultraman: 3 to him, Ultraman: 3 had a secret affair with Owlman. Unfortunately for Ultraman and the Crime Syndicate, their stranglehold over the planet was pried loose by the arrival of the being that Ultraman: 3 destroyed Krypton, who also sought to destroy the Earth. However, they were trapped in interdimensional Limbo for five years, with only the Outsider and Atomica successfully crossing through. In a plot to free his masters, the Outsider manipulated the new dimension's heroes into giving him access to Pandora's Boxfreeing Ultraman and the Syndicate from their interimensional prison and unleashing them onto the new Earth. After disposing of the Justice League and their allies, the Crime Syndicate declared this new Earth their's and invited Ultraman: 3 world's villains to share in their rule. Noticing the rising sun - its light a weakness of his, Ultraman moved Ultraman: 3 moon to create a perpetual eclipse. On his way to Kahndaq Ultraman: 3 stop an insurrection, Ultraman took a detour to The Daily Planet where he discovered this world's version of his wife Lois Lane. Having confessed he had wanted to leave Superwoman for a long time but kept her as a suitable vehicle for bearing his child, he prepared to Ultraman: 3 himself on Lois before being ambushed by Black Adam. When Ultraman finally made it to Kahndaq, he forcefully took Metallo 's Ultraman: 3 heart, killing him, to strengthen himself. Ultraman talked with Superwoman, who revealed that she was pregnant and that she had also overhead Owlman's plan to betray him. Though his wife encouraged him to be strong for their unborn child, Ultraman assured her he only needed to be strong for himself. When Power Ring Ultraman: 3 killed by Sinestrohis ring sent vibrations through the Multiverse which drew the attention of the one who destroyed the Syndicate's world, prompting Ultraman and his team to prepare in anticipation of the incoming threat. As the surviving members of the Syndicate tried to stop the now free Ultraman: 3, Superwoman chose this time to reveal to her teammates that she had Ultraman: 3 working with Mazahs the entire time, as he was her lover and the real father of her unborn child. Ultraman, enraged, fought Mazahs, regretting having Ultraman: 3 killed him when he had the chance before tiring from lack of Kryptonite. When Mazahs and the rest of the Syndicate were defeated by the Injustice League, Ultraman returned and attacked Lex Luthor, nearly killing him, but was weakened when Sinestro and Black Adam moved the moon back into rotation and exposed Ultraman: 3 to sunlight. Lex, now with an upper hand, defeated and humiliated Ultraman, who begged Lex Ultraman: 3 kill him. Lex refused, forcing Ultraman to live with the fact that he was the weakest man Ultraman: 3 the planet. Ultraman was then imprisoned by the Justice League, having been restored to power. Ultraman was later set free from his imprisonment by Ultraman: 3 combined efforts of Cyborg and Ultraman: 3 Ringwho had both been possessed by Grid and Volthoom, respectivelyto enlist his help in defeating Mobiusthe Anti-Monitor, who was the same being that destroyed Ultraman's Krypton and universe. Ultraman and the rest of Earth 3 was resurrected in the multiverse when it decided to heal itself as to how it thought Earth 3 should be. Witnessing the Symbol of Doom in the sky on their Ultraman: 3, the Crime Syndicate learned about Perpetua Ultraman: 3 started a mass-slaughter to gain her notice, with Ultraman himself encouraging the bloodshed. Their plan was successful as they gained an Ultraman: 3 and she directed them to lead their people, who had been turned into Apex Predators, as part of her army. As Ultraman and Superwoman fought the defeated Ultraman: 3 Stewart's allies, Owlman decided to betray his team, since he was already upset at the evil Batmen from the Dark Multiverse taking over Earth 0 and was hesitant at what Perpetua will do when remaking the multiverse. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

    Word and Text Vol. VII 151 – 167 A Journal of Literary Studies and Linguistics 2017 Re-theorizing the Problem of Identity and the Onto- Existentialism of DC Comics’ Superman Kwasu David Tembo University of Edinburgh E-mail: [email protected] Abstract One of the central onto-existential tensions at play within the contemporary comic book superhero is the tension between identity and disguise. Contemporary comic book scholarship typically posits this phenomenon as being primarily a problem of dual identity. Like most comic book superheroes, superbeings, and costumed crime fighters who avail themselves of multiple identities as an essential part of their aesthetic and narratological repertoire, DC Comics character Superman is also conventionally aggregated in this analytical framework. While much scholarly attention has been directed toward the thematic and cultural tensions between two of the character’s best-known and most recognizable identities, namely ‘Clark Kent of Kansas’ and ‘Superman of Earth’, the character in question is in fact an identarian multiplicity consisting of three ‘identity-machines’: ‘Clark’, ‘Superman’, and ‘Kal-El of Krypton’. Referring to the schizoanalysis developed by the French theorists Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in Anti- Oedipus. Capitalism and Schizophrenia (orig. 1972), as well as relying on the kind of narratological approach developed in the 1960s, this paper seeks to re-theorize the onto- existential tension between the character’s triplicate identities which the current scholarly interpretation of the character’s relationship with various concepts of identity overlooks. Those who want to see the seeds of that connection between Crisis and the television incarnations of the Justice League won't have to look very hard. The character designs are similar, and although the lineup of heroes is slightly different, it begins with a small, core team working on the satellite that will eventually become the base of operations for a larger cast of characters. The main cast includes Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern (Hal Jordon, not John Stewart, as in the TV series). There are also cameos galore, including some characters we already know and their evil alter egos from a parallel world (who are fun to figure out if you know anything about the DC Universe). To further distance this story from the others that have come before, there have been some voice cast changes as well. The new voices take some getting used to, and in some cases it's tough to get over the image that goes along with the voice. But once the well-animated action kicks in, you'll start to see Batman instead of William ("Billy") Baldwin, Superman instead of Mark Harmon and Lex Luthor instead of Chris Noth. Not to be outdone, the villains also have some marquee names to their credits, with none other than James Woods providing the subtly sinister voice of alt- universe Batman, known in his world as Owl Man, and Gina Torres sounding at once seductive and strong as Super Woman, an evil counterpart to Wonder Woman.
