Winter camp 2015 report JIS group organized 2 weeks winter education camp at AIT, , from 5th January to 17th January 2015. This is the 3rd education camp organized by JIS group. Students were chosen from all engineering branches(Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Food Technology) of JIS group’s 5 colleges (Narula Institute of Technology, Guru Nanak Institute of Technology, JIS College of Engineering, Dr. Sudhir Chandra Sur Degree Engineering College, Abacuas Institute of Technology, Greater Kolkata College of Engineering and Management) based on their merit. 40 students were selected through rigorous selection process which consists equal weight age on their semester average, written test and interviews. Entire expenditure (visa fees, travelling, insurance, accommodation, and fooding) is sponsored by JIS group. Prof. Sajal Saha (Asst. Professor, Dept. of Computer Application, Narula Institute of Technology) and Prof. Ranjana Ray(Asst. Professor, Dept. of ECE, JIS College of Engineering) accompanied the students as faculty mentor.

Students with Dr. Poomphat at Bangkok University students amenity centre. In this training students have been given exposure on various fields like 1. Construction Engineering and Management 2. Satellite communication and Space Debris 3. Augmented reality 4. Remote Sensing 5. Health IT and GIS 6. Energy Engineering and Management 7. 3D Computer Graphics 8. Nano Technology 9. Transportation Engineering 10. Climate Change and Water Engineering 11. Intelligent Clinical Training Systems 12. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) Students found special interest in UAV class by Khun Panithan Srinuandee(Engineer, The TCC technology group, Thailand) where Khun Panitan demonstrate how UAV works and collect data for different field based application.

Khun Panitan is demonstrating his UAV to the students. They experienced field visit at Bangkok University, NSTDA(National Science and Technological Development Agency), National Science Museum, Bang Pa In palace(summer palace of the king of royal govt. of Thailand), Ayutthaya(Ancient capital of Thailand), of Thailand, . Moreover they enjoyed their weekend at the spectacular safari world. At Bangkok University, they visited opto-electronics lab led by Prof. Karel Stacker and Prof. Poomphat and got the experience what are the cutting edge research works are going on in the field of optoelectronics and telecommunication. Students visited Thailand Science Park which is an integrated science and technology hub of NSTDA, BIOTEC (Biotechnology lab), NECTEC (Electronics and Embedded System lab), NANOTEC (Nanotechnology lab), MTECH (Material Science and Technology lab), Garden of Innovation, and Incubation Centre of NSTDA. Students expressed interest to work for internship in the embedded system lab of NSTDA and they got the assurance from the NSTDA authority and are advised to contact with the corresponding scientist at NSTDA with specific proposal of work. Students also visited the incubation centre of Thailand Science Park and learn the business model of incubation centre development.

Students with AIT faculty members before the cultural program on 15th January.

Students are at Bangkok University library. Students involved in different group projects like Construction Engineering Management, GPS data Collection, Building GIS map of South Asian region. These projects helped the students team based learning, work under pressure and meet the deadline. President of AIT and His excellency Dr. Suhas Bunditkul(former deputy prime minister of AIT) met JIS group students on 16th January in a cultural event organized by JIS group students. They appreciated student’s performance. His excellency Mr. Harsbardhan Sringla, ambassador of India in the Royal kingdom of Thailand and Mr. Anuj Kumar Gupta, Second Secretary (Science, Education, Culture &Tourism), Indian embassy met JIS group students on 15th January in a cultural event organized by JIS group students. He is ecstatic to see the short but brilliant performance of JIS group students. He asked about JIS group and its mission and vision in education. Moreover he is enquiring about the selection procedure of the students. He expressed his gratitude to the management of JIS group for initiating such a noble initiatives of sending students to AIT for global exposure. Prof. Nitin Kumar Tripathi, Director, special degree program, AIT, appreciated the enthusiasm of the students, and their desire to enhance their learning. “All of us at AIT have been impressed by your participation and performance,” Prof. Tripathi remarked.

Purpose of sending the student to AIT, Bangkok: Our current education system is text book oriented which lacks practical implementation aspects. Through this education camp students get 1. Global exposure: They get a chance to interact with the world renowned scientists and professors of NSTDA, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Agency), AIT, Bangkok Univerisity. The international exposure provided by the JIS group will help students engage with the global community in a multicultural environment. 2. Facing real life problem: They face some real life problem where they are asked to find set of solutions. Students give presentation on the last day where they propose their solution to those problems. Professors of AIT give some suggestions on the proposal. Through discussion and continuous learning process they realize without application of the knowledge, education is incomplete.

Students are performing on 16th January cultural program. Participating students of the last winter camp got motivated to pursue higher studies, become entrepreneur rather than doing job immediately after completing BTech. Two students of the last winter camp applied at AIT for masters program (one in Communication Engineering department and another in Nano Technology department) though they are placed in MNC’s from college campus drive. One student got selected for internship project at Bangkok University under Dr. Poomphat.

Participating student’s feedback “It was a wonderful experience to interact with highly experienced and qualified professors and learning such high class technology was amazing. The places we visited other than AIT campus like Grand Palace, Asiatique, Safari world, NSM, Bangkok University ware also very interesting. Our teachers were always with us and guided us throughout the camp. So the tour was very much inspiring as well as full of fun”…………………………………….Ms. Shreya Bandopadhyay

“I have enjoyed almost all the classes; field visits and the labs. I have gathered experience and the theories that is being taught by the renowned professors of AIT. I will try my best to implement it in my own country”………………………………………...... Mr. Sukanto Paul
