Theo Adam (1926-2019) In memoriam: Theo Adam (1926-2019) Foto © United Archives/imago Den 10 januari 2019 mottog vi beskedet att operasångaren Theo Adam hade gått ur tiden, 92 år gammal. För många är han en av de stora Wagnersångarna i modern tid. Han fick en mycket lång karriär och sjöng bland annat under 28 års tid i Bayreuth. Adam debuterade i sin hemstad Dresden redan 1949 och sjöng sin sista Wotan på Metropolitan 1988. Hans röst hade stor auktoritet och var en typisk basbaryton; klar och tydlig i diktion och klang och hade ett robust djup. Höjden var tillräckligt bra för att klara de dramatiska partierna, medan mellanläget och det låga registret hade en blank och stabil klang. På skiva är Adam välrepresenterad i allt från Mozart Trollflöjten( och Così fan tutte) till Hans och Greta, Friskytten med Carlos Kleiber, Fidelio och Wozzeck till ett antal suveräna Wagnerinspelningar. 1966-67 var en blott 40-årig Theo Adam den nya Wotan i Bayreuth i en suverän Ring under ledning av Karl Böhm som sedan kom ut komplett på skiva medBirgit Nilsson i toppform som Brünnhilde. Adam klarar det låga partiet i Valkyrians andra akt mycket bra, men allra bäst är han som Wanderer i Siegfried. Även Marek Janowski valde Theo Adam som Wotan i sin Ring, inspelad i början av 1980-talet. Där hade Adams röst åldrats, men klingade desto mer Wotan – bittrare, skäggigare och mer maktsjuk. Till mina personliga favoriter hör hans tolkning av Holländaren medOtto Klemperer från 1968 och framför alltDie Meistersinger med Herbert von Karajan 1970, där Theo Adams röst för alltid kommer att förknippas med Hans Sachs, en roll han gestaltade med vishet, humor och värme och dessutom göra trovärdig som en betydligt äldre man än han i själva verket var. Theo Adam gästade Stockholmsoperan som Wotan i Valkyrian den 7 mars 1973. Där sjöng han med Siv Wennberg, Birgit Nilsson, Kim Borg, Margareta Hallin och Kerstin Meyer på scenen. Ingen dålig line-up, direkt. Silvio Varviso var gästdirigent. Theo Adam blev gästprofessor på Musikhögskolan i Dresden, där han mot slutet av karriären undervisade i sång. Han författade även fem böcker om opera och sitt liv och leverne. Carl Asker Jag såg honom som Wotan mot Birgit Nilsson i Stockholm. Han var den mest komplette Wotan man kan tänka sig. Stor varm och vacker röst utan någon som helst begränsning – och en lysande skådespelare. Erik Graune Theo Adam var i bästa bemärkelse en scenartist. Hans rollporträtt var alltid fullfjädrat pregnanta i uttrycket, men detta till trots gav han alltid akt på ensemblespelet. Hans röst var markant och spände från djup bas till de högre regionerna skrivna för basbaryton. Spännvidden medgav en repertoar som sträckte sig från Trollflöjtens Sarastro till Jochanaan i Salome. I sina läsvärda böcker resonerade Adam mycket om rollgestaltning och nödvändigheten av att prioritera kommunikationen med åhöraren. Ett tydligt fokus på texten och ett rättframt sångligt framförande gjorde att publiken sällan gick miste om budskapet; skrämmande som Don Pizarro och tillbakalutat filosoferande som Hans Sachs. Under två decennier dominerade Adam som Wotan och spände en suverän båge från Rhenguldet till Siegfried, där han i tredje akten gav en omskakande upplevelse i scenerna med Erda och Siegfrid.     A Discography of the Choral Symphony by J. F. Weber In previous issues of this Journal (XV:2-3; XVI:l-2), an effort was made to compile parts of a composer discography in depth rather than breadth. This one started in a similar vein with the realization that SO CDs of the Beethoven Ninth Symphony had been released (the total is now over 701). This should have been no surprise, for writers have stated that the playing time of the CD was designed to accommodate this work. After eighteen months' effort, a reasonably complete discography of the work has emerged. The wonder is that it took so long to collect a body of information (especially the full names of the vocalists) that had already been published in various places at various times. The Japanese discographers had made a good start, and some of their data would have been difficult to find otherwise, but quite a few corrections and additions have been made and some recording dates have been obtained that seem to have remained 1.Dlpublished so far. The first point to notice is that six versions of the Ninth didn't appear on the expected single CD. Bl:lhm (118) and Solti (96) exceeded the 75 minutes generally assumed (until recently) to be the maximum CD playing time, but Walter (37), Kegel (126), Mehta (127), and Thomas (130) were not so burdened and have been reissued on single CDs since the first CD release. On the other hand, the rather short Leibowitz (76), Toscanini (11), and Busch (25) versions have recently been issued with fillers.

  • Wagner's Die Meistersinger
    Wagner’s Die Meistersinger: A partial discographical survey by Ralph Moore There are around ninety recordings of Die Meistersinger, of which only seven were studio-made and the last of those was recorded nearly twenty years ago; a handful are composite recordings from radio broadcasts or live performances but the majority are simply live recordings of one performance, with all the hazards, extraneous noises and potential for errors that the presentation of such a long and complex work entails. I review here some 24 recordings in all, including all seven studio versions, some live or radio broadcast performances, a couple of early recordings of excerpts and Böhm’s 1939 recording of Act 3, for reason of its exceptional quality. Two are in English: the 1923 pioneering effort and Goodall’s Sadler’s Wells performance in 1968. Some understandably esteem this opera above all Wagner’s other works, even the Ring. Certainly my experience in recent years of having seen two excellent productions, one at Glyndebourne and the other at the ENO confirms the validity of that assessment; not only is it musically deeply satisfying but it provides an absorbing dramatic spectacle and Beckmesser’s antics can even be genuinely funny – not a quality we necessarily associate with Wagner. The riot scene concluding Act 2, the cacophonous confusion melting away to leave the sole figure of the Nightwatchman intoning the hour, is one of the most thrilling in all opera; it must surely have influenced or even inspired Strauss in his use of three Nightwatchmen to provide a consoling conclusion to the end of Act 1 of his own Act 2 to Die Frau ohne Schatten.
