Everything is about to buzz at the chapel on Chalk Hill, Great Cressingham! Out of year-long discussions has come the idea of ‘The Hive,’ a new centre for spirituality.

The Hive will offer a programme of engaging opportunities to explore spirituality through activities for body, mind and soul. At the same time, we plan to develop the building into a multi- purpose studio space for music, dance, drama and exercise.

Everything hangs on what restrictions are in place at the time, but we are hoping to launch The Hive with a Living Nativity event on:

12 The Signpost THE WHITE HART INN, FOULDEN Questionnaire now in circulation! For most villages a pub provides a vital service; it is a meeting place, communication centre and an important lynchpin of village life. Much of the appeal of our village rests on its sense of community and the area it is in. It is the reason many people have moved to the village and remain. Making sure that the village retains its pub, we (The White Hart Inn Community Benefit Society Ltd) feel it would greatly enhance that community spirit and improve the available amenities. A serious consideration is the impact on local house prices. There’s a lot of articles out there that suggest property values can decrease quite significantly in the absence of a good local pub, especially in rural areas. That’s not to say that a private buyer or developer won’t buy and invest in making it a great pub, which of course would be fantastic, but it’s a very real risk. A research report issued by the Plunkett Foundation suggests that local pubs owned by the community are thriving, whereas private enterprises may fail. You can review the 2019 report here: https://plunkett.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/ PLUNKETT_BB_PUBS19_download2.pdf A questionnaire is one of the many steps we will be taking to involve everyone. We need to know your views on what might be provided and what would receive your support. Your response will be treated in confidence as entirely anonymous (unless you wish to add your name and address at the end which will NOT be published in the final results). It is now available from: Stephen Ward, Trevenna, White Hart Street, or Neil West, 22 Walnut Close. Once completed, please return the questionnaire, as soon as possible, in a sealed envelope to either of us. The questionnaire is also available to complete online via our Facebook page. The White Hart Inn Community Action Group would encourage you to join this page to keep up to date with our progress. If you decide to complete the questionnaire via Facebook, please DO NOT complete a paper copy as the results may lead to duplication. The results of this survey will also be published via our Facebook page and hard copies will also be available via email. This kind of venture has been successful in other communities all over the UK and most of these have been set up with the support of the Plunkett Foundation. Will our community be the next one? If you wish to speak directly to someone about this project, please contact the following: Email address: [email protected] Or call: Stephen Ward on 01366 328567 13 The Signpost GOODERSTONE

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH SCHEME This year’s Covid pandemic has brought into sharp focus the need for us all to look out for one another more than ever. Crime hasn’t stopped. During the first lock-down, there was a spate of break-ins in Gooderstone and an ever-increasing number of scams, both internet and telecommunications. Good citizenship, social interaction and a greater awareness of those in our neighbourhood who are alone and vulnerable are at the heart of the national Neighbourhood Watch scheme. Certainly, crime prevention is important but there is also the point about being neighbourly and supporting everyone in our village community. With this in mind, the Gooderstone Neighbourhood Watch (NW) group was formed some three years ago and currently have a membership of about 30 households. Working closely with the police, we aim to improve police-community liaison. Membership is free and there is no charge to register with the group. All personal information is data-protected. If you would like any further information about NW or would just like to join, please contact Kate Faro-Wood (Gooderstone NW Coordinator) on 01366 328 441 or by email on [email protected].

NEW PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT Many Gooderstone residents will already know that the parish council has purchased new play and exercise equipment for the village. Some of the old apparatus has been taken away and will be replaced in the near future. As well as play equipment for our younger residents, there will be an area for adults and older people to exercise. Due to Covid restrictions, there has been a delay in our obtaining the new equipment and we would ask for your patience and understanding on this matter. (The new equipment will be supplied by Wicksteed, and paid for by the FCC Communities Foundation, with the generous support of a number of local donors. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact any of the parish councillors, or the clerk).

18 The Signpost DECEMBER REFLECTIONS As I write this, we are back into lockdown. The sudden change in policy has disrupted planned Remembrance Day services and celebrations and caused hurried changes to wedding plans. We did manage to move a wedding in Mundford forward by four days, so that the couple could be married the week before the new lockdown regulations came into effect. Everyone pulled together, and it was a very happy occasion. The future is uncertain, but we are still looking forward to a celebration of Advent and Christmas which will be unique, and cause us to exercise all our creativity and ingenuity. Meanwhile, the world of nature continues – and the Autumn colours are particularly magnificent this year. Whenever I drive through forested areas, I am amazed at the feast of red, yellow, brown and green which greets me. Whatever we will face in the coming weeks and months, there is no doubt that our experience of Christmas will be one to remember. Many of our established traditions involve crowds of people gathering, and in all likelihood this will not be possible this year. However, there are many small, symbolic acts which can make this time of year special for us and for our family members. Decorations and colourful candles do much to lift the spirit, and we will still be able to enjoy listening to Christmas music, and watching familiar Christmas films. We are also learning to use long-distance communication, whether by telephone or by computer conference calls, to maintain and develop inter-personal relationships. These will be more important to us this year than ever before. Christmas is a time for sharing special experiences, and for making meaningful memories. This we can do, even if we are “locked down” . These are difficult times, but let us take time to recover the wonder of Christmas, of God’s gift to us, God becoming one with us, sharing in our humanity, in Christ. Looking ahead, Rev Joy Fernando and I plan to offer Alpha online, beginning in January 2021. If you, or anyone known to you, would be interested in joining our weekly discussions, in the comfort of your own home, please feel free to contact me:

Wishing you a blessed, safe and happy Christmas.

Rev. Linda Lubbe. 19 The Signpost This Autumn

Gwen Evans kept all the details of those who had booked to stay in the cottage since they had started renting it out for holiday accommodation two years ago. The idea was that if they had enjoyed their stay they might consider booking again at some future date. Ann Murphy has been one of the more recent guests and her details were soon found. Gwen still had some doubts as to whether she should contact Ann Murphy, but as Huw had said that on balance it should be Ann who made the decision and not them, so maybe she should. Huw had also pointed out that Anne did not have to contact Grantly but she should be aware that this attempt to speak with her had been made. Having finished his coffee Huw went back to the farmyard and left Gwen to make the phone call. Ann was just returning from her usual morning trip to the local shop and was rummaging in her hand bag for the front door key. She heard the phone ringing in the hall and having at last retrieved the key from the bottom of her bag, she opened the door and went to pick up the receiver. As she did so it stopped ringing and there was no caller at the other end of the line. “I wonder who that was,” she thought and decided to dial 1471 to find out. She did not recognise the number as being one of her usual callers and thought that it must be a “cold caller”. However it might be a genuine call so she decided to return the call. After three rings the phone was picked up and Ann heard a Welsh accent. “Hello, this is Gwen Evans speaking.” Ann gave a short gasp; this was certainly not someone she had expected to hear from. “You remember that you stayed in our holiday cottage last summer and made quite a hit with Scamp?” “Yes of course I remember but I am rather surprised to hear from you. Is there anything wrong?” “No everything is fine. It is just that we have received a strange request. We had a call from Charles Grantly, the man who owned the local manor which was destroyed in a fire under somewhat suspicious circumstances. Anyway, he asked if we had your contact details and whether we could let him have them. He said that he had something to discuss with you. Huw and I thought this was rather strange and said that we would consider the matter. We

20 The Signpost were not sure whether to contact you, but after considering all the issues, decided that you should make the decision whether to follow this up or not.” Ann couldn’t say anything. Images of her fateful visit to Grantly Manor, being locked in a bedroom and her release just prior to the blazing inferno that the manor had become now came back vividly in her mind. “What on earth could Charles Grantly want with her” Then she remembered the communication she had received from the local police, just a few weeks ago. They warned her that Charles Grantly had surfaced in and that he might try to contact her. It was possible that he wanted to find out what she had seen during her short visit to the manor and what she had told the police. The police had also asked that if Grantly did try to contact her then she should let them know. They had given her the phone number for the local police station and also a contact number for Dai Davies, the undercover police officer that had been assigned to the investigation of possible drug related activities at Grantly Manor. Gwen had been silent at the other end of the phone but due to the lack of response she was concerned that Ann had gone into a state of shock. “Ann, are you still there?” she asked and was relieved when Ann said, “Yes, sorry, I was in some sort of daydream. Let me have Grantly’s number and I will ‘sleep on it’. The police had warned me that this might happen so I will get in touch with them first.” Gwen gave her Grantly’s phone number and changing the subject said “Scamp would love to see you again if you ever fancy another visit to Wales. You would be most welcome.” With that she wished Ann well and returned the receiver to its holder. She was happy and felt she had done the right thing. It was now up to Ann to decide what she would do. Ann considered her options. She could ignore the request to contact Grantly, or she could accept and find out what this was all about. In the end she thought that a chat with Dai Davies was the best approach and to ask for his advice. She had made a note of both police contacts when they phoned a few weeks ago. Settling down in her chair she picked up the phone and dialled Dai Davies’s number.

21 The Signpost

The phone rang but there was no response and there was no request to leave a message. The only recourse left now was to contact the local police and see if they could put her in contact with Dai. The local police station was only a short walk from Rose Cottage and she needed some fresh air to clear her mind. She donned her hat and coat and set off. When she arrived and went up to the desk a young fresh-faced officer asked how he could help. Ann explained the situation and asked if she could speak to the officer that had phoned her a few weeks ago. She was told that... “the officer had been transferred,” but that her message would be passed on and he was sure they could arrange for Dai Davies to make contact with her. So that was it. Ann would just have to wait and see what happened next.

22 The Signpost NAUTICAL EXPRESSIONS

REGATTA: An Italian word, the correct spelling is ‘regata’ and it means a boat race. In the Middle Ages it was the custom for the people of Venice to sail to the Lido to practise throwing slings. Since this was for the possible defence of the newly founded Republic the government provided boats for the trip and between them a haphazard race began. Subsequently it became official with the boats starting from a line. The Italian for line is ‘riga’ and it is from this word that regatta is derived. Regattas are still very popular in Venice and take place each year.

QUARTERS: Strictly the area of the vessel from between 45 degrees on either side of the stern; port quarter, starboard quarter. It was the part of the ship where the officers’ accommodation was situated and was known as their ‘quarters’. Gradually the word has come to mean lodging or billets in the military sense.

OUTFIT: Collective term for gear or equipment required for a ship being made ready or ‘fit’ for sea. The preparation period known as ‘fitting out’. The word outfit has gradually come to include clothes worn for a special purpose.

A NOTE ABOUT NORTHWOLD BOWLS CLUB Over the last couple of issues we have inserted an advertisement for the club. Due to COVID-19, activities became severely curtailed and then almost impossible. However it is hoped that bowling may begin in earnest again in the Spring, around April. In the meantime, please note that Mr. F. ‘Hod’ Everett has stood down as Chairman and that any enquiries about the club should be directed to the Secretary: Mr Roger Preston, Tel: 01366 727694.
