Grabowicz Giovanna Siedina The Reception of Horace in the Courses of Poetics at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy: 17th-First Half of the 18th Century Abstract For the first time, the reception of the poetic legacy of the Latin poet Horace (65 B.C.-8 B.C.) in the poetics courses taught at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy (17th-first half of the 18th century) has become the subject of a wide-ranging research project presented in this dissertation. Quotations from Horace and references to his oeuvre have been divided according to the function they perform in the poetics manuals, the aim of which was to teach pupils how to compose Latin poetry. Three main aspects have been identified: the first consists of theoretical recommendations useful to the would-be poets, which are taken mainly from Horace’s Ars poetica. -

Jahrhunderts Markus Roth ABSTRACT: Die vorliegende, vom Kyrie I der Missa Sine Nomine ausgehende Untersuchung wid- met sich bemerkenswerten Eigenarten der Kompositionstechnik Alexander Agricolas (1446–1506), dem schon die unmittelbaren Nachfahren bescheinigten, Dinge »auf ungewohnte Weise zu wen- den« (Hulrich Brätel 1536). Tatsächlich zeigen sich bestimmte Paradoxien im Tonsatz des späten 15. Jahrhunderts bei Agricola auf besonders eigentümliche Weise. Die Studien von Fabrice Fitch (2005; 2007) vertiefend, diskutiert der Beitrag die Frage, auf welche Weise Agricola seinerzeit Regeln ›verkehrte‹ und sich über satztechnische Normen hinwegsetzte. In diesem Zusammenhang wird der Begriff der ›mi contra fa-Latenz‹ vorgeschlagen, um den grundsätzlichen Problemen der Musica ficta zu begegnen. This essay, starting with the Kyrie I of the Missa Sine Nomine, is dedicated to some remarkable compositional idiosyncracies of Alexander Agricola (1446–1506), of whom his contemporaries attested the talent of “turning things in an unexpected manner” (Hulrich Brätel 1536). Certain pa- radoxes in the formal composition of late 15th century music appear in Agricola’s work in a strange fashion. Drawing on and furthering the studies of Fabrice Fitch (2005; 2007), this paper reveals how Agricola breaks with compositional conventions. Oldenburgische Beiträge zu Jüdischen Studien Schriftenreihe des Seminars Jüdische Studien im Fachbereich 3 der Carl von Ossietzky Universität Band 10 Herausgeber Aron Bodenheimer, Michael Daxner Kurt Nemitz, Alfred Paffenholz Friedrich Wißmann (Redaktion) mit dem Vorstand des Seminars Jüdische Studien und dem Dekan des Fachbereichs 3 Mit der Schriftenreihe „Oldenburgische Beiträge zu Jüdischen Studien“ tritt ein junger Forschungszweig der Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg an die Öffentlichkeit, der sich eng an den Gegenstand des Studienganges Jüdische Studien anlehnt. Es wird damit der Versuch unternommen, den Beitrag des Judentums zur deutschen und europäischen Kultur bewußt zu machen. Deshalb sind die Studiengebiete aber auch die Forschungsbereiche interdisziplinär ausgerichtet. Es sollen unterschiedliche Themenkomplexe vorgestellt werden, die sich mit Geschichte, Politik und Gesellschaft des Judentums von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart beschäftigen. Ein anderes Hauptgewicht liegt auf der biblischen und nachbiblischen Religion. Ergän- zend sollen aber auch solche Fragen aufgenommen werden, die sich mit jüdischer Kunst, Literatur, Musik, Erziehung und Wissenschaft beschäftigen. Die sehr unterschiedlichen Bereiche sollen sich auch mit regionalen Fragen befassen, soweit sie das Verhältnis der Gesellschaft zur altisraelitischen bzw. Jüdischen Religion berühren oder auch den Antisemitismus behandeln, ganz allgemein über Juden in der Nordwest-Region informieren und hier auch die Vernichtung und Vertreibung in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus behandeln. Viele Informationen darüber sind nach wie vor unberührt in den Akten- beständen der Archive oder auch noch unentdeckt in privaten Sammlungen und auch persönlichen Erinnerungen enthalten. Diese Dokumente sind eng mit den Schicksalen von Personen verbunden. Sie und die Lebensbedingun- gen der jüdischen Familien und Institutionen für die wissenschaftliche Geschichtsschreibung zu erschließen, darin sehen wir eine wichtige Aufgabe, die mit der hier vorgestellten Schriftenreihe voran gebracht werden soll. -
Michael Praetorius's Theology of Music in Syntagma Musicum I (1615): a Politically and Confessionally Motivated Defense of Instruments in the Lutheran Liturgy
MICHAEL PRAETORIUS'S THEOLOGY OF MUSIC IN SYNTAGMA MUSICUM I (1615): A POLITICALLY AND CONFESSIONALLY MOTIVATED DEFENSE OF INSTRUMENTS IN THE LUTHERAN LITURGY Zachary Alley A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2014 Committee: Arne Spohr, Advisor Mary Natvig ii ABSTRACT Arne Spohr, Advisor The use of instruments in the liturgy was a controversial issue in the early church and remained at the center of debate during the Reformation. Michael Praetorius (1571-1621), a Lutheran composer under the employment of Duke Heinrich Julius of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, made the most significant contribution to this perpetual debate in publishing Syntagma musicum I—more substantial than any Protestant theologian including Martin Luther. Praetorius's theological discussion is based on scripture, the discourse of early church fathers, and Lutheran theology in defending the liturgy, especially the use of instruments in Syntagma musicum I. In light of the political and religious instability throughout Europe it is clear that Syntagma musicum I was also a response—or even a potential solution—to political circumstances, both locally and in the Holy Roman Empire. In the context of the strengthening counter-reformed Catholic Church in the late sixteenth century, Lutheran territories sought support from Reformed church territories (i.e., Calvinists). This led some Lutheran princes to gradually grow more sympathetic to Calvinism or, in some cases, officially shift confessional systems. In Syntagma musicum I Praetorius called on Lutheran leaders—prince-bishops named in the dedication by territory— specifically several North German territories including Brandenburg and the home of his employer in Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, to maintain Luther's reforms and defend the church they were entrusted to protect, reminding them that their salvation was at stake. -

These two volumes, the most recent to appear in the edition of Melanchthon’s correspondence prepared by the Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften, collect Melanchthon’s correspondence from the year 1547, the year following Luther’s death, during which the Schmalkaldic wars were raging. The edition is made up of two parts: the first “Register” [r] section, comprising eight vol- umes giving German summaries of the texts of the correspondence, a volume of addenda and cross-references, and a further five volumes of indices of places and people (of which the final two are in preparation). The second section, “Texts” [t] will comprise 30 volumes in total, following Melanchthon’s corre- spondence from 1514, when he was a seventeen-year-old student at the Univer- sity of Tübingen, to 1560, the year of his death. In total, Melanchthon’s correspondence includes nearly 9500 texts, written either by him or to him. For the year 1547, the total is over 500. Volume 16 col- lects 272 texts: 243 written by Melanchthon and 29 received by him. Volume 17 is made up of 232 texts, of which 201 were composed by Melanchthon, and 31 addressed to him. -

Comprising illuminated manuscripts as well as independent miniatures, the works at the center of this study provide novel insight into Hoefnagel’s practice as an illuminator and also into the status and function of illumination at the Central European courts of Munich, Ambras, and Prague. Not simply extending a traditional interest in the medium at these sites, Hoefnagel’s works on parchment transformed illumination into a new form bringing together a range of practices and discourses associated with the courts, with humanism, and with emerging disciplines dedicated to the production of new knowledge. Artistically inventive and conceptually productive, Hoefnagel’s compositions helped shaped an identity for the artist as a hieroglyphicus—an initiate into and maker of a privileged language of representation. Unlike other medieval and early modern art, the illuminated page could bring together, on one surface, different media (text and image), genres (heraldry, portraiture, nature studies, biblical narrative, and ornament, among others), and modes of representation (realism, illusionism, symbolism, and abstraction). -
