    Rivalry in the football industry and its impact on the stock prices of listed football clubs Master Thesis Finance BY W.J.Tankink Supervisor: J.H. von Eije Groningen, January 11, 2018 University of Groningen Faculty of Economics and Business MSc Finance Words: 9381 Abstract Rivalry in the football industry is examined in this paper as it analyses rivalry effects on stock price performance of football clubs. It does not matter which sport is exercised and at what level, rivalry among clubs is one of the main sources of attractiveness of a league. The rivalry among football clubs leads to a positive “mood” in case the rival loses and leads to a negative “mood” in case the rival has a for them positive match result. It is hypothesised that these emotions due to the performance of the period rival affect the stock price performance of the focal football club. This study shows that there is evidence that the results of the period rival can have an impact on the investment decisions of club supporters. Introduction Football, or what they call it in the United States soccer, is a well-known sport exercised all around the world. It all started in 1887. In its “classic” sense, match-fixing involves a party directly or indirectly influencing or trying to influence the outcome of matches to its own benefit. In this context, the number of foreign players and market values of football clubs competing in the Super League between 2015-2020 and their end-of-season league rankings are listed. With the obtained data, the effect of the number of foreign players of the clubs and the market values of the clubs on the sportive success of the clubs were investigated. In the research, mixed method research was preferred by using qualitative and quantitative research methods. The research is an exploratory mixed research in terms of its purpose. The population of the research consists of the Super League professional football teams that competed in all 5 seasons between 2015- 2020. The data obtained from the transfermarket market values, the number of foreign players and the averages of the league success rankings of the football teams competing between the years 2015-2020 were classified and grouped. Then, correlation analysis was performed with SPSS analysis program.

Bu gezegenin en popüler sporu olan futbolun romantik dokusu kadar ekonomik gerçekliğini de aktarmaya çalıştık. 24. senemizde, hiçbirimizin aklına bile gelmeyecek bir tabloyla karşı karşıyayız. Bir önceki sezon 9.3 milyar Euro’ya dayanan ilk 20 kulübün cirosu için pandemi öncesi tahminler takip eden sezonda tarihi 10 milyar Euro barajının aşılacağı yönünde idi. Ancak karşımızda gelirlerde %12 civarında bir daralma tablosu var. Hiç şüphe yok ki, 2019/20 sezonuna korona virüs salgını damgasını vurdu. Ancak bu etki çok daha büyük olabilirdi. Diğer birçok sektörlerün aksine, futbol endüstrisinin takvimi 1 Ocak – 31 Aralık değil, 1 Haziran – 31 Mayıs. Yani COVID-19 Avrupa kıtasında etkili olmaya başladığında, ulusal liglerdeki maçların önemli bir kısmı zaten oynanmıştı. Erteleme / seyircisiz oynama / olduğu haliyle tescil gibi kararların alındığı dönemde beş büyük ligde maçların tamamlanma oranı ortalama %70’in üzerindeydi.
