Castello di Cabbiavoli The Puccioni family is pleased to Welcome you in Cabbiavoli and wish you a pleasant stay! Please treat our Home as your Home Article published by the Magazine Italy - June 2005 ‘Cabbiavoli Castle - a Tuscan paradise’ by Adam Butler Situated prominently on a Tuscan hilltop amidst the rolling, vine and olive tree strewn hills around the town of Castelfiorentino lies the astonishingly beautiful Cabbiavoli Castle. This typically grand, Florentine-style residential complex comprises of a main building with a Baroque-façade where the living quarters are located, flanked by a tall medieval brick tower on one side and a little chapel dating to the 13th century on the other. Originally built in 1210 by a certain Count Alberti di Certaldo who was chief of the ruling Longobard family that dominated the nearby Elsa valley, the castle of Cabbiavoli was originally a fortified “borgo” of the Alberti family and in fact it still retained its farm and granary until the renovations in the late 1940s. The only parts remaining of the original fortified castle and the adjacent buildings are the surrounding defensive walls and the tower. This brick tower still stands proudly today (albeit slightly leaning) and, flanked by a huge ancient pine tree, offers dramatic views of the undulating, fertile countryside below, as far as the towered town of San Gimignano which is just visible on the horizon to the south. The Alberti family owned and lived in the castle until the 17th century, after which it fell into the hands of the patrician Brandini family. In 1900 Alice Brandini married Cesare Puccioni, son of a local entrepreneur Luigi who by 1888 had founded a chemicals factory just north of the town of Castelfiorentino.

  • Villa Petra Le Convertoie Greve, Chianti Florence, Italy
Villa Petra Le Convertoie Greve, Chianti Florence, Italy The Chianti Classico Area The Consortium of Chianti Classico The League of Chianti was a military and political organization founded in 1384 that administered the Chianti territory and defended its southern borders from attack on behalf of the Republic. It seems that the brand’s origins are linked to the ancient rivalry between Florence and Siena. Legend has it that the two cities decided to hold a contest between two knights to put an end to their notorious rivalry. The knights had to arrive to a chosen destination before their opponent did the following morning, both starting from their respective cities at the first call of the rooster. The Sienese chose a white rooster while the Florentines chose a black one. The white rooster was overfed the night before, while the Florentines gave the black rooster little to eat. On race day, the hungry black rooster began to sing long before the white one allowing the Florentine knight to start with an advance, winning over Siena! In 1924, a group of 33 wine producers gather in Radda in Chianti and gave birth to the first Association for the defense of Chianti wine. The 33 members chose the Gallo Nero—black rooster— as their symbol, which is the historical symbol of the Military League of Chianti. History The mild climate, lush vegetation and fertile soil of the Chianti region has proven to be a prime choice inhabited since the 2nd millennium BC. The Etruscans were the first to modify the Chianti landscape by herding cattle to cultivating the terrain with many crops including grapes for the wine that would one day be famous around the world.

  • 1 Giorno Nel Chianti
THE CHIANTI The Chianti is one of the most beautiful hilly zones in Tuscany and maybe even in all of Italy. Sprawling between the provinces of Florence and Siena this region is famous around the world for its production of Chianti wines. The landscape is made of vineyards and olive groves, fortified villages, castles and characteristic hamlets, all set in a splendid panorama. The sweet hills of the Chianti Tuscany is situated in the centre of Italy and we find the Chianti area in the centre of Tuscany, between Florence, Siena and Arezzo. This hilly zone is fascinating for its diversity as much as for the famous cities around it. Besides referring to the wine produced here, the name "Chianti" designates a territory with different limits according to the aspect considered. Geographically speaking, it is a hilly terrain, at medium altitude, expanding on about twenty kilometres (with a progression north, south, south- east). The highest point is the Monte San Michele (893 m). The valleys of five rivers define its shape: Pesa, Greve, Ombrone, Staggia and Arbia. From a historic point of view, its name should only refer to the towns of Gaiole, Radda and Castellina (all "in Chianti") which were the territories members of the old “Lega militare fiorentina del Chianti” with the Gallo Nero (black rooster) as an emblem. 1 According to the law on wine denomination the zone generally designated by the name “Chianti” includes the three “comuni della Lega” as well as the Florentine territories of San Casciano and Tavarnelle in Val di Pesa, Greve and part of Barberino in Val d'Elsa and the Siena territories of Castelnuovo Berardenga and Poggibonsi.
