  • A Sample of Cultural Interaction in the Age of Modernism:The Representation of the Dobruja Turk in Romanian Painting
ANKARAD / AJARS ANKARA ANADOLU VE RUMELİ ARAŞTIRMALARI DERGİSİ ANKARA’ S JOURNAL OF ANATOLIA AND RUMELIA STUDIES ANKARAD, 2020; 1(2): 481-501 [email protected] e-ISSN: 2717-9052 DOI: A SAMPLE OF CULTURAL INTERACTION IN THE AGE OF MODERNISM:THE REPRESENTATION OF THE DOBRUJA TURK IN ROMANIAN PAINTING Atanas KARACOBAN* - Dalila OZBAY** Abstract: The present study attempts to bring to light an artistic experience almost unknown to the larger public, which is the repre sentation of the Turkish people of Dobruja in the Romanian painting of the first half of the twentieth century, which is the period of modernism in art promoting freedom of artistic expression, innova tion and experimentation. Among the origins of modernism, of pri mary importance stand the principles of romanticism, aestheticism, symbolism, and particularly in the case of painting, Impressionism, and the entire late nineteenth-century artistic reaction against real ism and tradition. Along with these predecessors, in the case of Ro manian artists, the rediscovery of Dobruca was another factor providing new concerns and perspectives in painting. The authors of this study are therefore also conscious of the influence of the Turkish community from Dobruja on the development of Romanian painting in the new context of territorial changes after the second Balkan War, the emphasis on which being another aim of the pre sent study. 481 Key words: Art, Painting, Modernism, Impressionism, Dobruja. • Unification of Art Theories (Uat) - a Long Manifesto
UNIFICATION OF ART THEORIES (UAT) - A LONG MANIFESTO - by FLORENTIN SMARANDACHE ABSTRACT. “Outer-Art” is a movement set up as a protest against, or to ridicule, the random modern art which states that everything is… art! It was initiated by Florentin Smarandache, in 1990s, who ironically called for an upside-down artwork: to do art in a way it is not supposed to be done, i.e. to make art as ugly, as silly, as wrong as possible, and generally as impossible as possible! He published three such (outer-)albums, the second one called “oUTER-aRT, the Worst Possible Art in the World!” (2002). FLORENTIN SMARANDACHE Excerpts from his (outer-)art theory: <The way of how not to write, which is an emblem of paradoxism, was later on extended to the way of how not to paint, how not to design, how to not sculpture, until the way of how not to act, or how not to sing, or how not to perform on the stage – thus: all reversed. Only negative adjectives are cumulated in the outer- art: utterly awful and uninteresting art; disgusting, execrable, failure art; garbage paintings: from crumpled, dirty, smeared, torn, ragged paper; using anti-colors and a-colors; naturalist paintings: from wick, spit, urine, feces, any waste matter; misjudged art; self-discredited, ignored, lousy, stinky, hooted, chaotic, vain, lazy, inadequate art (I had once misspelled 'rat' instead of 'art'); obscure, unremarkable, syncopal art; para-art; deriding art expressing inanity and emptiness; strange, stupid, nerd art, in-deterministic, incoherent, dull, uneven art... as made by any monkey!… the worse the better!> 2 A MANIFESTO AND ANTI-MANIFESTO FOR OUTER-ART I was curious to learn new ideas/ schools /styles/ techniques/ movements in arts and letters.

  • Tonitza and the Great War: Soldier, Prisoner, Reporter and Artist
Keywords: World War One, Nicolae Tonitza, art, humanism, sublimation. The People’s participation in the State Affairs is the decisive cause of the ruthless, hyperbolic character of the revolutionary wars, unlike the lace-like wars waged by the European cabinets in the midst of the popular indifference.

  • Romanian Art Society - a Landmark of the Autochthonous Aesthetics in 1918
I N T E R N A T I O NA L CO N F E R E N C E RCIC’18 Redefining Community in Intercultural Context Bucharest, 17-19 May 2018 ROMANIAN ART SOCIETY - A LANDMARK OF THE AUTOCHTHONOUS AESTHETICS IN 1918 Cristina GELAN Music, Theater and Visual Arts Faculty, “Ovidius” University, Constanţa, Romania Abstract: On March 9, 1918, the Romanian Art Society was founded in Bucharest. This was an organization that appeared as a form of protest at the proposal of an authorized artistic force of the time, the Artistic Youth Society, addressed to the artists who were mobilized by the Great General Headquarters of the Romanian Army in Iasi to participate in the great exhibition that they organized in April 1918. Revolted by the academic-romantic-idyllic spirit, reflected in the works of the representatives of the Artistic Youth Society, out at the issues of daily life, artists such as Ştefan Dimitrescu, Camil Ressu, Nicolae Tonitza, I. Ştefănescu, Ion Theodorescu- Sion, Nicolae Dărăscu, Alexis Macedonski, Ionescu Doru, Oscar Han and Traian Cornescu wanted to create an artistic bastion that would provide them with a framework where their aspirations can be revealed and offer them the legitimacy to seek a line of expansion and deepening of the ways of expression specific to Romanian art. During the period 1918 - 1924, the Romanian Art Society became the main attraction of the ideals of the artists who were mobilized on the front of the First World War and who contributed to the realization of works of art, of a high artistic level, grounded in the surrounding reality.

The exhibition illustrates the evolution of Transylvanian painting between the 18th and the 19th centuries and Romanian art from the first half of the19th century through to post-war years. Alongside the masterpieces of the Romanian art masters, the exhibition also includes the artworks of the artists active in Braşov, from the Saxon patriciate portraits to the contemporary artist’s creations. The Portrait of Joseph von Drauth (1709-1762), senator of the city of Braşov, painted by Johann Ölhan the Elder (?-1763), opens the exhibition. [ST] The painting is typical for Saxon patriciate portraiture, a provincial variant of portrait d`apparat. The artist insists on the details which indicate that the commissioner boasted a high social status (coat of arms, apparel, as well as on the objects which suggest the official duties he exercised. The City Hall and the buildings surrounding it, depicted in the background of the portrait, are also meant to illustrate his position. But the posture of the model is conventional and artificial. We find the same interest in underlining the social position of the model in the creation of an anonymous artist active in the late 1700s, who painted the Portrait of Oprea Ţârcă, the head of the shepherds’guild of Săcele.

Homage… It is as complex as the universe; at the same time art is unique, like human beings; it offers huge possibilities, as it explores – due to the power of image – the human condition. It is a continuance of human kind.” Elie Faure ost of the great museums in the world were created around private collections. Subsequently, they enriched M their patrimony through donations and purchases, and this is an ongoing process nowadays, too. The art collectors, with less material resources or billionaires, have invested their fortune in acquiring paintings, sculptures, graphics, decorative art, leaving to the world true masterpieces and connecting their names to them, at the same time. Antiquity records the collection of paintings exhibited in one of the wings of Propyleae – architectural wonders that guard the entrance to the Acropolis –, while the Ambrosian Painting Gallery in Milano was founded due to the donation made by cardinal Federico Borromeo in 1621, which included incunabula, paintings of Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Rafael and others. After the French Revolution in 1789, the Louvre, home of the royal family for centuries, was transformed in 1793 in a national museum, which hosts mostly the art collections of the crowned heads of France. The same way, the renowned Italian museums were made starting with the collections donated by princes, dukes and important Italian merchants.

  • Between Orthodoxy & the Nation: Traditionalist Definitions Of
BETWEEN ORTHODOXY AND THE NATION. TRADITIONALIST DEFINITIONS OF ROMANIANNESS IN INTERWAR ROMANIA By IonuĠ Florin BiliuĠă Submitted to Central European University History Department In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisor: Assistant Professor Balázs Trencsènyi Second Reader: Assistant Professor Constantin Iordachi CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2007 Abstract The aim of the present thesis is to provide an analysis of the cultural debates of interwar Romania regarding the definition of the character of the Romanian ethnicity in connection with Orthodox spirituality and institutional Orthodoxy. This thesis will focus on the traditionalist side of the debate as depicted in the works of Nichifor Crainic (1889–1972) and Nae Ionescu (1890–1940). This paper goes between two definitions of Romanianness that introduce Orthodoxy in explaining its specificity. One (several) of Nichifor Crainic, an integrative cultural vortex that comprises traditional rural culture and Orthodoxy and a radicalized one of Nae Ionescu that conditioned the Romanianness to its direct link with Orthodoxy thus distinguishing between “true” Romanian and “good” Romanian. I have tried to account for the lack of dialogue between the promoters of these definitions and their legacy in Romanian culture.
