Brown; McMaster University – Chemistry and Chemical Biology There is a need to discover new antimicrobial drugs to combat drug-resistant infections. We are trying to find new molecules that can prevent the growth of parasites and viruses by developing and using novel chemical reactions, as well as by isolating new products from plants and fungi. This text describes a new way to make quinolines, a type of molecule found in many drugs. A molecule prepared by this method inhibited the parasite T. gondii at low concentrations. We have also identified quinazolinones, molecules that can be rapidly assembled by combining three components, which inhibit parasites and viruses. The thesis also includes a faster way to make derivatives of an antiviral molecule from daffodils, which can help determine which parts of the molecule are important for antiviral activity. We have also identified new molecules from the fungus Xylaria polymorpha and an antiviral compound from the Ficus benjamina tree.

Dhillona aNational Vector-Borne Disease Control Programme, Delhi – 110 054, India bNational Institute of Communicable Diseases, Kozhikode, Kerala, India Abstract Since 2006, the Indian state of Kerala has reported outbreaks of chikungunya (CHIK). During July- August 2007, an unusual increase in the incidence of fever was noticed in Kadmat, Amini and Kavaratti Islands in the Union Territory of Lakshwadeep, a group of Indian islands adjacent to the Kerala coast in the Arabian Sea. The populations affected as per the primary health centre (PHC) records of three islands, viz. Kadmat, Amini and Kavaratti, was 85%, 1.4% and 0.15% respectively. Entomological surveys revealed very high larval indices of Aedes albopictus only in the three surveyed islands. Aedes aegypti, the classical vector of dengue, was not detected. The maximum breeding of Ae. albopictus was found in coconut shells (57%), tyres (9%), metal containers (9%) and plastic containers (8%). The breeding was also detected in tree holes and rat-bitten coconuts on top of the trees. The House Index for Ae. albopictus ranged between 95.4% in Kavaratti to 79% in Amini. Kadmat island which was the worst affected, recording the maximum Container Index of 90%, compared with 40% in Amini island. The CHIK outbreak seemed to have been caused by importation of the virus from Kerala, because of heavy movement of the islanders to the mainland.     Central Asia The Library of Dr. Eden Naby including books from the Library of Prof. Richard Nelson Frye 1,041 titles in ca. 1,150 volumes Central Asia The Library of Dr. Eden Naby Dr. Eden Naby (PhD 1975, Columbia University) is a distinguished Iranian-Assyrian cultural historian of Central Asia and the Middle East. A contributing editor on modern Assyria for the "Encyclopædia Iranica," she is the widow of Professor Richard Nelson Frye. Dr. Naby has conducted research, taught and published on minority issues in countries from Turkey to Tajikistan. Her work on Afghanistan and on the Assyrians is outstanding in the field of cultural survival. Dr. Naby was born in the once-important Assyrian village of Golpashan, near Urmia, in Iran. After taking her undergraduate degree at Temple University in 1964, she served in the Peace Corps in Afghanistan, and on receiving her PhD, she taught in Iran. In 1980 she led a CBS 60 Minutes team for the first ever filming of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Dr. Naby was also featured in Charlie Wilson's War (2008) with Dan Rather. In addition to her scholarly work as a lecturer and publishing writer, Dr. Naby has devoted much of her time since 1979 to establishing endowments at United States universities to promote the preservation of Assyrian archives. These endowments, especially at Harvard University, are providing a basis for the preservation of research materials, especially now in the diaspora. Dr. Naby’s husband, the late Professor Richard Nelson Frye, was a renowned scholar of Iranian and Central Asian Studies, and Aga Khan Professor Emeritus of Iranian Studies at Harvard University.
