De início, apresento uma exposição sobre as reconfigurações históricas nos discursos que elaboraram a noção de qualidade a respeito do meio televisivo, a partir da comparação entre a televisão e outros meios artísticos considerados mais ―legítimos‖, da oposição entre público de massa e exclusivo e de hierarquias entre diferentes produções. Então, tomando como referência as séries vencedoras da categoria ―Melhor Série Dramática‖ do Emmy Awards entre 2010 e 2019, analiso as relações de gênero no desenvolvimento dessas séries. A análise é organizada em duas partes: primeiramente observo questões da indústria televisiva, com foco nas equipes criadoras; canais nas quais foram exibidas; investimento e audiência. Na segunda, observo principalmente as representações de gênero e estratégias narrativas. Entre os resultados, foi observado que são estabelecidas relações entre prestígio e masculinidade através de determinados fatores utilizados para distinguir as produções televisivas entre si. Ficou evidente a preeminência de homens, principalmente em cargos mais altos, das equipes por trás do desenvolvimento das séries analisadas. E foi possível notar uma diferença na representação de gênero entre as séries premiadas na primeira metade da década em comparação as que foram premiadas na segunda metade. On gender, prestige and awards: male legitimacy in the debate about quality television Abstract: The present research aims to analyze the relations between masculinity and the discourses about television quality. At first, I present an exposition on the historical reconfigurations in the discourses that elaborated the notion of quality about the television medium, from the comparison between television and other artistic media considered more ―legitimate‖, the opposition between mass and exclusive audience and hierarchies between different productions. Then, taking as reference the winning series in the ―Best Dramatic Series‖ category of the Emmy Awards between 2010 and 2019, I analyze the gender relations in the development of these series. The analysis is organized in two parts: first I look at the television industry issues, focusing on the creative teams; channels on which they were shown; investment and audience. In the second, the main focus is on gender representations and narrative strategies. Among the results, it was apparent that relationships between prestige and masculinity are established through certain factors used to distinguish television productions from each other. It was evident the preeminence of men, especially in higher positions, of the teams behind the development of the analyzed series. And it was possible to notice a difference in the representation of gender between the series awarded in the first half of the decade compared to those that were awarded in the second half. Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation.
