The conference is held at Sweetland Hotel in Dalian, China from July 8 to 10, 2019. It is a follow-up conference to the first five conferences, which were held in Tainan (January 2008), Shanghai (December 2009), Atlanta (2012), Hong Kong (2013), and Singapore (2016). The Conference is sponsored by Dalian Maritime University and Dalian University of Technology. Hongbin Ma PROGRAM CHAIR This conference series is dedicated to the late Dr. Chang-Lin Tien (1935–2002), a world-renowned scholar and leader in higher education. His intellect and unique vision continue to inspire our efforts in expanding the frontiers of micro/ nanoscale heat and mass transfer. Research and education on micro/nanoscale heat and mass transfer have advanced rapidly over the last two decades through many dedicated individuals and team efforts, with direct impact now extending into various fields in both science and engineering. This conference provides a forum for researchers, educators and practitioners around the world to exchange ideas on the state-of-the-art research and development and Dongqing Li identify future research needs in this emerging interdisciplinary field. The CONFERENCE CHAIR technical program contains 331 presentations organized into 51 sessions. In addition, the conference features 18 exciting plenary/keynote talks, which span all core areas of interest to our research community. -

play Cry to Heaven: A Play to Celebrate One Hundred Years of Chinese Spoken Drama by Nick Rongjun Yu Introduction and translation by Shiao-ling Yu Yutian (Cry to Heaven) is the third Chinese stage adaptation of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin between 1907 and 2007. The fi rst, Heinu yutian lu (Black Slave’s Cry to Heaven) by Zeng Xiaogu, was staged by Chinese students in Tokyo in 1907; the second, Heinu hen (Regret of the Black Slaves) by Ouyang Yuqian, was mounted as part of the fi ftieth anniversary of the fi rst production; and the third, Yutian (Cry to Heaven), commemorated the hundredth anniversary of Chinese spoken drama (huaju) in 2007. Each adaptation has a different focus that refl ects the social, political, and cultural conditions of its time, and together the works provide a historical view of the development of Chinese spoken drama. The most recent production, by Nick Rongjun Yu, juxtaposes one hundred years of dramatic history with scenes from Uncle Tom’s Cabin, making the American slaves’ struggle to gain freedom a metaphor for Chinese dramatists’ efforts to achieve their own. Yu Rongjun, also known as Nick Rongjun Yu, is the author of more than twenty plays, including Renmo gouyang (Dog’s Face), WWW.COM, and Tiantang gebi shi fengrenyuan (The Asylum Next to Heaven). His plays have won many prizes in China and have been performed in Hong Kong, Taipei, the United States, and other countries. Besides being a playwright, he is director of programming and marketing for the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center. -

Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart #69 For Immediate Release October 13, 1981 CHINESE DELEGATION TO ACCOMPANY CHINA FILM WEEK AT MoMA CHINA FILM WEEK, five films from The People's Republic of China, will be accompanied on its American tour by a delegation of five Chinese visitors. Two directors, two actresses, and a film scholar will travel to the American Film Institute in Washington, The Mu seum of Modern Art in New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum. CHINA FILM WEEK will play MoMA's Roy and Niuta Titus Auditorium from October 22 through 29, 1981. Leading the delegation, CHENG YIN is the Director of the Beijing Film Institute, the Vice-Chairman of the China Film Workers Association, a well-known director and leader of the Chinese film industry. CHEN HUAIKAI, the director of CHINA FILM WEEK'S selection SONG OF YOUTH (1959), is also associated with the Beijing Film Studio. His adap tation of the popular novel Song of Youth, co-directed with Cui Wei, con tinues to find enormous acclaim in China. SONG OF YOUTH features a brave and resolute female protagonist, play- ed by actress XIE FANG, who is the third member of the CHINA FILM WEEK delegation. She also stars as one of the title characters in TWO STAGE SISTERS (1964), which will also be seen in CHINA FILM WEEK. Another actress featured in SONG OF YOUTH, QIN YI, will be a member of the delegation. Her career is mainly based at the Shanghai Film Studios. -

ABSTRACT A Survey of Chinese Politeness from Imperial to Modern Times: Kinship Terminologies and Honorifics Anna Ye Director: Ms. Holly Shi, M.A. This thesis is founded on the understanding that culture and language are mutually influenced by one another. Having a grasp on a culture’s linguistic politeness strategies allows seamless navigation within a culture; it is a mark of fluency in a language. This thesis examines the intimate relationships between Confucian teaching, major events within Chinese history, and Chinese politeness. Specifically, it follows the evolution in usage of kinship terminologies and honorifics from imperial to contemporary times in spoken Chinese. The effects of major ideological and political transitions such as the May Fourth Movement, Communist Revolution, and Cultural Revolution on Chinese politeness are discussed. While the usages of kinship terminologies and honorifics have risen and fallen from imperial to contemporary times, they are still an active part of contemporary Chinese politeness. To illustrate different methods of usage in politeness strategies, examples of dialogues from popular Chinese movies and television shows are presented and analyzed. The Way to the 1930s’ Shanghai Female Stardom From the Pioneering Actresses of the Late Qing to the Popular Female Film Stars of the 1920s and 1930s Yuan Zhou Master’s Thesis (60 Credits) East Asian Studies Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages University of Oslo Autumn 2010 i Abstract Shanghai’s film industry of the Republican era (1912-49) saw the emergence of female stardom, which reached its zenith in the 1930s. This thesis explores the dramatic transformations from the illegitimate use of women in female roles in the late-Qing theatre to the overwhelming star status some actresses achieved in the 1930s Shanghai cinema. Compared to the art of female impersonation that was treasured in the traditional theatre in both China and Japan, women’s capacity – rooted in their physical bodies – to present female roles more realistically and naturally significantly contributed to the legitimization of their acting in the realism-oriented modern theatre and cinema. When female stardom rose in the imported foreign medium, film, the content of star images, centred on figures of virtuous women, swordswomen of the 1920s, and genuine, innocent girls of the 1930s, was largely shaped and manipulated by prevailing ideologies embedded in films. Sexualized images of actresses, on one hand, were always a significant part of their appeal to the audience, but on the other hand, constantly invited various forms of sexual exploitation. The historical connection between performing and prostitution even brought certain legitimacy (in a psychological sense) to such exploitation, and brought more scepticism about women engaged in performing. A group of female film stars rising in the 1930s and recognized as genuine artists eventually could shake off such scepticism and won a positive public opinion.
