  • DAP: Inaction on Perkasa Shows Umno's True Colours Malaysiakini.Com June 20, 2011
DAP: Inaction on Perkasa shows Umno's true colours Malaysiakini.com June 20, 2011 Umno's inaction over Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali's allegedly seditious and racist statement yesterday, has showed its true colours as a party that survives on racial division, said DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng. In a statement today, Lim (left) said Ibrahim had raised the threat of another May 13, by proclaiming himself a 'war general' and warning of severe repercussions for the Chinese community if they proceed with the Bersih march. "Never before in Malaysian history has anyone issued such an irresponsible and racist statement by calling on a certain community to stock up on food. Such a remark is clearly unacceptable by every peace-loving Malaysian," read the statement. Lim then directed his fire at Umno for its inaction on Ibrahim. "By allowing such fascistic and Nazi-like threats by Ibrahim Ali, Umno is indeed showing its true colours as a party that survives on racial division. In its refusal to take action, Umno is therefore guilty of supporting Perkasa and its stand," he said. The Penang chief minister recalled several previous incidents where Umno was seen as reluctant to take action including the cow's head protest in 2009 and various remarks by Umno leaders equating Indians to beggars and Chinese women to prostitutes. "This clearly proves that 1Malaysia is nothing more than an exercise in self-delusion and mass deception. "It is obvious that Umno, which is now politically bankrupt, is unable to raise any other issue besides race and religion, which is conveniently used to not only scare the people, but also to cover up their shortcomings," he added.

However, the committee faces daunting challenges that will be difficult to overcome. Commentary THE MALAYSIAN government has revived an interfaith committee which, according to Prime Minister Najib Razak, could serve as a mechanism to resolve problems and issues (related to religion) through “honest and frank discussions”. The committee was actually formed almost a year ago, in April 2010, after the brouhaha over the issue of Christians using the word ‘Allah’ to refer to God, which saw protest demonstrations in Kuala Lumpur and even some attacks on churches in different parts of the country. However, the committee was stillborn since it was roundly attacked even before it could sit down to meet. Non- Muslim members of the committee decided to boycott it after a comment by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin that the committee only consisted of ‘small-fry’ and it would not have any influence.

The views of the authors are their own and do not represent the official position of IDSS. ___________________________________________________________________________ CRISIS OF CHINESE POLITICS IN MALAYSIA’S RULING COALITION Joseph Liow* 12 March 2003 Introduction Recent intramural crises in the two Chinese partners of Malaysia’s ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) or National Front have raised questions about the future of Chinese parties in the multiracial coalition. Indeed the current twists in the long-standing factional conflicts in the Malaysian Chinese Association and the related tensions between MCA and Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia, may even threaten BN’s continued relevance in Malaysian politics. With dissent brewing in the dominant Malay partner, UMNO (United Malays National Organisation), over the leadership succession after Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad’s departure, and the still-smarting political wounds after its 1999 election reverses, the internal crises in MCA and the quarrels between MCA and Gerakan, are bound to have a detrimental impact on BN’s political fortunes. Some unnerving signs have already surfaced. At the November 2000 Lunas by- election in Kedah, a constituency with a substantial number of Chinese voters, it was Chinese votes, ironically, that delivered the seat to the Malay opposition candidate from Parti Keadilan. In assessing the future of Chinese politics in the coalition, three ongoing issues dominate: (1) internal crisis within the MCA, (2) MCA-Gerakan tensions, and (3) the interest and encroachment of UMNO into Chinese politics within the BN. A critical question is whether the MCA under a new leadership will continue to be willing to play a subservient role or press for more concessions from UMNO in the interests of the Chinese community.

Gerakan: 'Don't give face to racial extremists' Malaysiakini.com August 22, 2010 Gerakan calls for Malaysians not to give face or space to racial extremists who are out to destroy Premier Najib Abdul Razak's 1Malaysia concept. gerakan press conference koh tsu koon 2Party chief Koh Tsu Koon (left) said, “There are racial extremists in Perkasa and some in Umno, who are out to promote their own political interests (at the expense of a multi-racial society).” “We have to criticise (such activities in order) to promote racial harmony in the country,” said Koh, who is also national unity and performance management minister in the Prime Minister's Department. He said more Malaysians must subscribe to the spirit of promoting the 1Malaysia concept, and should not succumb to the racial hatred spread by people who have personal ulterior motives. Koh says by not giving such people publicity and time of day, such hatred can be prevented from flourishing in the country. • The Emergence of New Politics in Malaysia from Consociational to Deliberative Democracy
Taiwan Journal of Democracy, Volume 5, No. 2: 97-125 The Emergence of New Politics in Malaysia From Consociational to Deliberative Democracy Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani Abstract Since independence in 1957, Malaysia has practiced consociational democracy that permits elite deliberation only. However, in the 2008 general election, Malaysian voters almost caused the Barisan Nasional government to be toppled by the opposition. They demanded more participation in policy making, as consociationalism has led to many malpractices in the government such as corruption and cronyism. The demands rose by the opposition, civil society, and new media have forced the government to implement an element of deliberative democracy. Although such deliberative democracy is probably a mask for the real agenda of continued authoritarian deliberation, strong pressures from the people are apt to ensure that deliberative democracy will be effectively practiced in the future. Key words: Malaysia, deliberative democracy, consociational democracy, civil society, Internet. Malaysia is beginning to embrace the new politics of deliberative democracy, leaving behind the old politics of consociational democracy. Consociationalism and power sharing as practiced by the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) has permitted elite deliberation only. To stay in power, the BN-dominated government has restricted the people’s rights to political freedom and controlled dissents and criticism. However, since the twelfth general election on March 8, 2008, there has been a shift in Malaysia’s political arena toward deliberative democracy, caused by the BN’s dissension politics, a civil society movement, and the new Internet media. These three factors have managed to transform Malaysian society and open space for public participation and deliberation.

  • LABU AIRPORT Chedet.Co.Cc January 17, 2009 by Dr. Mahathir Mohamad
LABU AIRPORT Chedet.co.cc January 17, 2009 By Dr. Mahathir Mohamad 1. Air Asia has done well to explain the justification for the so-called KLIA-East in Labu. 2. Not having the facilities and personnel I can only give my very unprofessional view on the justification: a) Passenger Capacity I must congratulate Air Asia on its very remarkable success. By 2014 it will handle 26 million passengers. Present terminal at KLIA is handling about 25 million passengers. KLIA is planned to handle 125 million passengers. It has 25,000 acres of land to build another terminal and four satellites. It can even duplicate these terminals and satellites. But Air Asia wants low-cost terminals with no aero-bridge, no luxury interiors. This is not a problem for KLIA. There is enough space in the 25,000 acres of reserved land to build the low-cost terminal to accommodate the 60 million Air Asia passengers in the distant future. MAHB (Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad) can do this. (Incidentally Putrajaya has only 10,000 acres of land). However, by 2014 the total number of Air Asia passengers would only be 27 million. Accommodating this number should be no big deal for MAHB. b) Runway capacity By 2014 Air Asia will have 77 aircrafts. LCCT capacity will still be for 33 aircrafts. Does Air Asia expect all its aircrafts to be on the ground in LCCT all the time? Usually some would be in the air and many would be at other airports. Expanding the parking area would not be too difficult.

  • TO BE OR NOT to BE a RACIST by Dr. Mahathir Mohamad on August 9
TO BE OR NOT TO BE A RACIST By Dr. Mahathir Mohamad on August 9, 2010 8:04 PM 1. Recently I had occasion to talk to a group of former state and federal members of the Barisan Nasional. 2. I had extolled on the virtues of the BN coalition type of Government and the achievements under the BN Government at State and Federal levels. 3. Then came question time. Very sensible questions were posed by these ex-YB's and I managed to answer them reasonably well. 4. Then an ex-MP or State Councillor rose and pointed out that under the Opposition Government he sees more Chinese holding high posts in the Government. The component parties also seem to be working much closer with each other. As an example, PAS women members not only attended the funeral of a Chinese but also helped to fold the paper money usually scattered at Chinese funerals. 5. Why is it that the BN did not give more posts to the Chinese and appoint Chinese Deputy PM and assistants to the state MB's? Why is Umno less tolerant of Chinese religious ceremonies? 6. I was startled by this criticism of the BN by an ex-member of the State or Federal BN Government. Do I answer truthfully or do I skip and gloss over things in order not to sound racist? But then in asking the question, isn't the questioner being racist? 7. After the forum I debated with myself and finally decided that I must give the true reason for the fewer positions given to the Chinese in the BN Governments, and Umno appears to be less accommodating of Chinese religious practices.
