South Beach ‘Winter Party’ Brings Thousands Seaside

Cheers For Queers Story and Photos by Steve Shires and Kevin Hopper On Sunday, March 4th Las Olas Blvd. In Fort Lauderdale became the venue for Pride South Florida’s annual parade. “The new route worked incredibly well. Participation was better than ever!” exclaimed an enthusiastic organizer, the PSF co-chair, Richard Cimoch. For the first time the parade started and ended on Las Olas Blvd – thru the main hub of tourist driven street, and easily accessible for the Ft. Lauderdale GLBT community, many of whom gathered at the Cathode Ray and on bleachers set up adjacent to Bar Amici. The warm and supportive crowd applauded approvingly as marchers from a wide variety of GLBT groups walked down the boulevard, past the Floridian, a popular gay gathering place, and into Colee Hammock Park. Ironically, the neighboring church on East Las Olas was having an outdoor wedding ceremony in the park just as the gay groups arrived. Sixty different groups participated in the parade, which was not the largest gathering for South Florida’s GLBT community, but they were fervent and enthusiastic, glowing gaily on a sunny afternoon just before the rains came. The Cathode Ray won two awards, Best Walking Group and Best Reflection of Theme. GLOW won most creative. The GLCCSF won Best Community Organization and Liberty Travel took top honors for Best Business. Tony Beall and Carol Moran of the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of South Florida were acknowledged as the grand marshals of the 2001 Parade, which was led by music from the Gay and Lesbian chorale groups, and marching bands.
