Sharpe, 1999), and International Communications: A Media Literacy Approach (M.E. Sharpe, 2004). Silverblatt’s work has been translated into Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and German. Each chapter consists of at least two parts. The first part consists of a detailed discussion of one of the theoretical approaches to genre study. This is followed by a “Lines of Inquiry” section, which summarizes the major points of the discussion section and suggests directions for analysis and further study. Some chapters also include examples of genre analysis that illustrate how the particular theoretical approach is applied. The text focuses on the process of genre analysis, using the selected ap- proaches discussed. The book provides examples and analyses of genres in an effort to support, illustrate, and extend any abstract concepts that have been introduced. More important, it gives students the theoretical tools to conduct their own primary research into genres. In that sense, the methodology is expansive rather than reductive. Presumably, two students could conduct an analysis of the same genre using different ap- proaches and come up with divergent interpretations. In all cases, for an interpretation to be valid: (1) the analysis must be systematically applied, and (2) the analysis must be supported with concrete examples from the text (i.e., film, television episode, newspaper). It must be emphasized, however, that depending on the specific area of study, one approach may be more useful than another. This text builds on the qualitative methodologies I developed in previous works (Media Literacy: Keys to Interpreting Media Messages and Approaches to Media Literacy: A Handbook), and applies many of the principles of media literacy discussed in those works to the study of genre. For this book, I relied heavily on the popular press for resource materials, particularly the New York Times. My strategy involved moving from specific accounts to exploring the implications of these articles. The stories that appear in the press about genre (often in the business sec- xiii PREFACE tion, or “looking at the arts” section) illustrate the ways in which genres reflect, reinforce, and shape cultural attitudes and preoccupations, and are products of historical events. Although a familiarity with media literacy principles is helpful, this text should provide you with the necessary theoretical tools to apply to the study of genre. For those who would like additional discussions of these concepts, I would refer you to the Keys and Approaches texts. For those who are already familiar with the concepts, the brief discussion in the text should be a helpful review. I would like to thank my research assistants, Don Miller and Jeff Nelson, for their support and contributions to the text. xiv GENRE STUDIES IN MASS MEDIA CHAPTER 1 vi – – – 1 – – – Introduction Overview We are all familiar with TV reality shows such as The Apprentice, Sur- vivor, or Big Brother. But what exactly is a reality show? What elements are common to all of these programs? Their shared characteristics are what define the reality genre. The word genre simply means “order.” As applied to artistic works, a genre is a type, class, or category of presentation that shares distinctive and easily identifiable features. Examples of genres include romances, science fiction, situation comedies, and news programming. Even popular music falls within basic genres—or, as they are more commonly known, formats. Radio stations are organized around particular formats, such as country, rhythm and blues, hip-hop, and talk radio. A genre can be identified by its own distinctive patterns in premise, plot, structure, character, worldview, style, and conventions. Because of these characteristic elements, genric programming (that is, a program that belongs to a particular genre) can be considered as a body of work. Brian G. Rose explains: “The term genre implies that these groups of formal or technical characteristics exist among works of the same kind, regardless of time or place of composition, author, or subject matter.”1 (For a discussion of formula, see Chapter 3.) Because most media programs belong to a particular genre, such as science fiction or romantic comedy, a genre acts as a portal through which the audience typically receives media messages. Each genre presents a consistent worldview that shapes the ways we think about our world. A Media Literacy Approach to Genre Studies A media literacy approach to genre studies presents a range of approaches to the study of genres. Becoming familiar with these various approaches 3 CHAPTER 1 provides students with a number of theoretical “lenses” through which they can conduct primary research into the genre. These strategies also provide a framework that can facilitate the discussion of media content with others—including children, peers, and the people responsible for producing media programming.

Positing that human subjectivity was intrinsically divided against itself, Freud suggested that the ego‟s instincts for pleasure and survival were undermined by a competing component of mental life, which he called the death drive. But the death drive does not primarily refer to biological death, and the term has consequently provoked confusion. By distancing Freud‟s theory from physical death and highlighting its imbrication with disability, I revise this important psychoanalytic concept and reveal its utility to disability studies. While Freud envisaged a human subject that is drawn, despite itself, toward something like death, I propose that this “something” can productively be understood as disability. In addition, I contend that our culture‟s repression of the disability drive, and its resultant projection of the drive onto stigmatized minorities, is a root cause of multiple forms of oppression.

    ABSTRACT Title of Document: COMMUNICATING FEAR IN FILM MUSIC: A SOCIOPHOBIC ANALYSIS OF ZOMBIE FILM SOUNDTRACKS Pedro Gonzalez-Fernandez Master of Arts, 2014 Directed By: Dr. Patrick Warfield, Musicology The horror film soundtrack is a complex web of narratological, ethnographic, and semiological factors all related to the social tensions intimated by a film. This study examines four major periods in the zombie’s film career—the Voodoo zombie of the 1930s and 1940s, the invasion narratives of the late 1960s, the post-apocalyptic survivalist fantasies of the 1970s and 1980s, and the modern post-9/11 zombie—to track how certain musical sounds and styles are indexed with the content of zombie films. Two main musical threads link the individual films’ characterization of the zombie and the setting: Othering via different types of musical exoticism, and the use of sonic excess to pronounce sociophobic themes. Lawrence This dissertation collects three articles that emerged from my work as a teacher and a researcher. In Chapter One, I share curricular resources that I designed as a teacher of research literacies to encourage qualitative research writers in (English) education to engage creatively and critically with the aesthetics of their research-writing processes and to narrate their experiences in dialogues with others. Specifically, I present three heuristics for writing and revising qualitative research articles in (English) education: “PAGE” (Purpose, Audience, Genre, Engagement), “Problem Posing, Problem Addressing, Problem Posing,” and “The Three INs” (INtroduction, INsertion, INterpretation). In explaining these heuristics, I describe the rhetorical functions and conventional structure of all of the major sections of qualitative research articles, and show how the problem for study brings the rhetorical “jobs” of each section into purposive relationship with those of the other sections. Together, the three curricular resources that I offer in this chapter prompt writers to connect general rhetorical concerns with specific writing moves and to approach qualitative research writing as a strategic art. Chapters Two and Three emerged from research inspired by my teaching, during which writers shared with me personal literacy narratives, or autobiographical accounts related to their experiences with academic research writing.

HONORS COORDINAfffiR Poeschl 1 The Pedagogy of Intertextuality, Genre, andAdaptation: Young Adult Literary Adaptations in the Classroom Preface There has been a recent shift in the viewpoint of educators in regardto the literary genre known as "Young Adult" (YA L ).1 This genre, with a target audience of readers aged 12 to 18 respectively; is becoming more and more present in the English Language Arts classroom and its application within curriculum has resulted in it sometimes talcingthe place of moretraditionally taught works from the Literary Canon.2 This shift in preference and presence is arguably beneficial to students being that YAL provides a more accessible means by which students can meet Common Core State Standards through texts that are often more interesting to students. Further, there is a growing subset of YAL wherein authors provide a modernized take on literary classics, allowing narratives that have been staples in ELA curricula for decades to become more relatable to their contemporaryadolescent audiences.
