His writings can be found in various rabbinic and popular journals, including Hakira, Ohr Yisroel, Nehoroy, Nitay Ne’emanim, and on Aish, Times of Israel, Torah Links, Seforim Blog, and elsewhere. His writings are rejected as often as they are accepted, and the four books he is currently working on will likely never see the light of day. “I’d rather laugh[2] with the sinners than cry with the saints; the sinners are much more fun.”[3] Fortunate is the man who follows not the advice of the wicked, nor stood in the path of the sinners, nor sat in the session of the scorners. Accordingly, they are no different than other dissident movements throughout our history that have rejected these basic tenets. We therefore inform the public that in our considered opinion, “Open Orthodoxy” is not a form of Torah Judaism (Orthodoxy), and that any rabbinic ordination (which they call “semicha”) granted by any of its affiliated entities to their graduates does not confer upon them any rabbinic authority. May the Almighty have mercy on the remnants of His people and repair all breaches in the walls of the Torah, and may we be worthy to witness the raising of the glory of Hashem and His sacred Torah.

GEDOLIM LETTERS on Vaccination, Parental Rights, and Religious Freedom Gedolim Letters on Vaccination, Parental Rights and Religious Freedom • 1 Introduction is publication has been prepared on behalf of the talmidim of Moreinu Harav Shmuel Kamenetzky, shlit”a, Moreinu Harav Elya Ber Wachtfogel, shlit”a, and Moreinu Harav Malkiel Kotler, shlit”a. In this chapter, when mention is made of “our Gedolim,” the reference is to these three of our leading American Gedolim. Our Gedolim have made their views on vaccination known to their talmidim and to their petitioners. eir view is not extreme. ey do not advocate against vaccination. ey rule that vaccination is a parental choice, and that parents may not be coerced into vaccination. Perhaps most importantly, they state that parents who choose not to vaccinate should be viewed as parents exercising a right and making a justiable decision, not as agitators recklessly endangering the public welfare. is publication refutes the assertions—which have been recently circulated widely—that all Gedolim obligate parents to vaccinate, and that non-vaccinating parents are rotzchim and rodm. Non-vaccinating parents in our communities are acting with the full consent of da’as Torah, yet they are being maligned and vilied, and, in countless cases, victimized and hurt. e achdus and shalom within our communities and families is being gravely damaged; the above unfounded and untrue assertions have had much to do with it. Part 1: “We the Undersigned…” and the Chicago Letter Measles! e Original Lakewood Psak In years past, most states—including New York and In 2008, a Lakewood beis din was convened to hand New Jersey—granted parents the legal right to opt out down a ruling.

5779 - bpipn mdxa` [email protected] 1 c‡qa HALACHIC AND HASHKAFIC ISSUES IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY 130 - VACCINATION - PART 2 OU ISRAEL CENTER - SPRING 2019 In Part 1 we examined the halachic parameters of taking risks and saw the following: • The Tiferet Yisrael quotes a Yerushalmi and rules it is permitted to take a small immediate risk to avoid a larger potential risk. Thus, one may dive into a river to save someone who is drowning, even though this places the person at some risk of death and even though there is no certainty that the other person will actually drown. If adopting a small risk to save another person is permitted, all the more so adopting such a risk to save oneself! The Tiferet Yisrael applied this to smallpox inoculations of the time which carried a 1 in 1000 risk of death. • There are three categories of danger which we are obligated to avoid: (i) Immediate risks to life and limb (eg roof without fence): Torah obligation to avoid and proactively prevent (ii) Low-level risks which are common (eg drinking unchecked water): Rabbinic obligation to avoid and prevent (iii) Standard risks of everyday life: Good to avoid BUT Shomer Peta’im Hashem • Shomer Peta’im Hashem is a halachic principle which allows us to take normal low-level risks in life and rely on God for protection. There are number of ways in which such risks can be defined: - risks below a certain threshold (10%?) - risks which are future possibilities and not imminent - risks which are normal in society - risks which are justified by sufficient gain A] RISK TAKING - APPLICATION TO VACCINATIONS zcn iedc icen r'ek t'kre ,`id daeg llk dievn dpi`y xzeia dwegx dpkqa xaecn m`c izazk mixacd zpwqnae 1.

15 Recent Statements by Agudath Israel and The Rabbinical Council of America Re- garding Women Rabbis To place the following two articles, regarding the ordination of women as rabbis, in perspective we present, in chronological or- der, the following statements issued by Agudath Israel and The Rabbinical Council of America. Ed. Statement of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of America (10 Adar 5770) [February 25, 2010]1 Rabbi Avi Weiss has conferred “semikha” upon a woman, has made her an Assistant Rabbi at the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale where she carries out certain traditional rabbinical functions, and has now given her the title of “Rabbah” (formerly “Maharat”). He has stated that the change in title is designed to “make it clear that Sara Hur- witz is a full member of our rabbinic staff, a rabbi with the addi- tional quality of a distinct woman’s voice.” These developments represent a radical and dangerous departure from Jewish tradition and the mesoras haTorah, and must be con- demned in the strongest terms. Any congregation with a woman in a rabbinical position of any sort cannot be considered Orthodox. Vaccines & Jewish Law Contemporary Halakhic Quandaries Young Israel of West Hartford Rabbi Tuvia Brander [email protected] 1. Infectious Diseases Society of America, Always-deadly measles complication more common than believed 10/28/16 Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a neurological disorder that is 100 percent fatal. Infants younger than 12 months, who are too young to receive measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, can get infected with measles and later develop SSPE, which may lay dormant for years. While it was once thought the risk of post-measles SSPE was one in 100,000, recent research identified a rate as low as 1 in 1,700 in Germany among children infected with measles before they were 5 years old, and the new study found it is about one in 600 for those who get measles as infants before being vaccinated. There is no cure for SSPE and the only way to prevent it is to vaccinate everyone against measles. 2. • Judaism and Jewish Philosophy 19 Judaism, Jews and Holocaust Theology
Please see the Cover and Contents in the last pages of this e-Book Online Study Materials on JUDAISM AND JEWISH PHILOSOPHY 19 JUDAISM, JEWS AND HOLOCAUST THEOLOGY JUDAISM Judaism is the religion of the Jewish people, based on principles and ethics embodied in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) and the Talmud. According to Jewish tradition, the history of Judaism begins with the Covenant between God and Abraham (ca. 2000 BCE), the patriarch and progenitor of the Jewish people. Judaism is among the oldest religious traditions still in practice today. Jewish history and doctrines have influenced other religions such as Christianity, Islam and the Bahá’í Faith. While Judaism has seldom, if ever, been monolithic in practice, it has always been monotheistic in theology. It differs from many religions in that central authority is not vested in a person or group, but in sacred texts and traditions. Throughout the ages, Judaism has clung to a number of religious principles, the most important of which is the belief in a single, omniscient, omnipotent, benevolent, transcendent God, who created the universe and continues to govern it. According to traditional Jewish belief, the God who created the world established a covenant with the Israelites, and revealed his laws and commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai in the form of the Torah, and the Jewish people are the descendants of the Israelites. The traditional practice of Judaism revolves around study and the observance of God’s laws and commandments as written in the Torah and expounded in the Talmud. With an estimated 14 million adherents in 2006, Judaism is approximately the world’s eleventh-largest religious group.
