A Place Where Learning Is Fun!” Student Manual High School
”A Place Where Learning is Fun!” Student Manual High School 1 TO BE READ ON THE BUS ON YOUR WAY TO CAROWINDS! Your bus pulls up to the entrance of Carowinds and you are about to jump out of your seat with excitement. After checking in, you run to the rollercoaster ride you have been hearing about for a year; Fury 325. You are now barreling down the track at 95 miles per hour, taking hairpin turns along its 6,602 feet of track. You’re screaming at the top of your lungs in fear but enjoying every minute of it. The only thing holding you in your seat is a safety harness... but how does physics help keep you in your seat? How do the laws of physics affect amusement park ride design? Today you will learn how the basic principles of physics apply to the amusement rides at Carowinds! All rides create forces through the use of engines…diesel, electric, steam, hydraulic, etc. They use lots of pulleys, gears, levers and other mechanical devices to transfer these forces throughout the ride and eventually to the riders. So why do you feel the forces you experience on the rides? All can be explained by Newton’s Three Laws of motion: 1. An object in motion tends to stay in motion and an object at rest tends to stay at rest until acted upon by an unbalanced force. (Inertia) 2. F = ma (force is equal to the mass of the object multiplied by its acceleration) 3. For every action (force) there is an equal and opposite reaction (force). -

On March 28, Roland Mack, the Mack family, the mayor (burgermeister) of Rust and special guests opened the park with a ribbon-cutting amid a flurry of showering confetti, balloons, and songs of celebration. The ceremony included a welcome from co- founder Roland Mack that reflected not only on how the park had changed over four decades, but the European community as well. Relation- ships across borders back in 1975 were a far cry from what they are today. It is that in- vigorated sense of European connectivity that has helped Germany’s largest theme park find astounding success. ATMOSFEAR Fact Sheet
ATMOSFEAR Fact Sheet Introduction: ATMOSFEAR is a state-of-the-art amusement attraction, which serves as both an observation tower and swing ride. The ride caters to a variety of guests including adventure seekers and families. Physical Characteristics: Description: ATMOSFEAR consists of a tower, star, control booth and an area for waiting guests to queue. The tower is a 9-foot square steel structure, stands 225 feet tall, and is bolted to a concrete foundation. The ride features 24 passenger seats. The winch motor is located at the base of the tower. The ride system works much like a standard elevator system. It is attached through two steel ropes to the counterweight and through four steel ropes (redirected through pulley blocks in the tower’s head) to the inner frame. It has a safety brake (disc brake) and a service brake (drum brake). The ride requires one small, mechanical / control booth style building with dimensions not to exceed 10’ by 15’. The ride will be equipped with four tower lighting flood lamps. The lights will typically be operational during the seventeen days of the annual Fair at the PNE. During Playland’s typical summer operating hours, the park will close at 8:00pm and illumination of the ride will not be required. There will be no chaser or turbo lights, which would illuminate the tower; the ride will be lit with solid beams of light from the spot lights below. Lighting on the tower is focused on the tower only and is of low intensity so as to not create a glare. -

During the family’s first visit, Carowinds denied them access to at least twelve rides. On the family’s second visit, Carowinds denied them access to at least eight rides, and then later in the day, increased the number of prohibited rides to at least twenty-eight. Mr. Aldridge returned to Carowinds a third time and was again denied access to at least twenty-eight rides at Carowinds. Plaintiffs were denied access based on speculation, stereotypes, and generalizations about their ability to safely enjoy different rides as individuals with lower leg amputations, and not because of legitimate safety requirements. Defendants illegally discriminated against Plaintiffs based on their disability. Plaintiffs desire to return to Carowinds and to enjoy any rides which they are safely able to enjoy. JURISDICTION AND VENUE 1. This action is brought under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (“ADA”), 42 U.S.C. §§ 12181-12189. You've Seen the Movie, Now Play The
“YOU’VE SEEN THE MOVIE, NOW PLAY THE VIDEO GAME”: RECODING THE CINEMATIC IN DIGITAL MEDIA AND VIRTUAL CULTURE Stefan Hall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2011 Committee: Ronald Shields, Advisor Margaret M. Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power. -
