DiveQuest: The View From the 68 Other Side of the Glass Looking Forward…and Back Again

The end of 2015 has seen plenty of exciting Disney news, not only in the parks, but in film as well. Disney’s two blockbuster releases, The Good Dinosaur and Star Wars: Awakens, perfectly exemplify the notion that a trip to Walt Disney World not only affords you the opportunity to travel to different worlds, but also to different times. Nostalgic for the past? You can wander through the turn-of-the-century streets of Main Street U.S.A., the golden era of Tinseltown on Hollywood Boulevard, or the colonial avenues of Liberty Square. But how about way back? (And I mean waaaay back!). You can venture back to prehistoric times in DinoLand U.S.A. as well as Ellen’s Energy Adventure. You can make the argument that a visit to takes you back even further in time (after all, the story takes place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away), but a trip to and Epcot will give you a fascinating glimpse into the technological wonders that the future holds. This is one of the great things about Walt Disney World; you can experience not only a different place, but a different time. While and DINOSAUR feature time travel machines as their means of conveyance, in a sense Disney has already made great use of the perfect time machine, your imagination. You’re limited only by your dreams, and with a bit of help from Disney’s Imagineers, you can travel to places and times that will provide you with the greatest adventures you could ever imagine. So are you ready, fellow time travelers? Let’s explore the past and the future…Disney style!

Enjoy the magic! Tim Foster

A Masterpiece!!

Last year, in my Drawing 2 class, we were asked to make a collage out of a magazine. Since Disney is such a big part of my life, I knew what magazine I was going to choose. As much as it pained me to do so, I decided to use Celebrations as my magazine of choice, cutting it up to rearrange the images. We used the collages as reference to create a colored pencil drawing. I thought you might want to see the final product. You may recognize the images from issue #24. I was able to finish the project on time, despite my teacher’s concerns. Some areas I had to rush through, especially the briar patch area, but hopefully I’ll find time to go back and add more detail later. Thank you so much for creating such a wonderful magazine!

From lifelike Audio-Animatronic figures to CGI rendered characters, Disney has always been at the forefront of the latest and greatest technologies when it comes to special effects. To top it off, Disney’s greatest achievement has been how they integrate these effects into the overall attraction experience. No effect is there simply for effect’s sake; everything is meant to enhance the story, whether it be the actual narrative of an attraction, or the untold backstory behind a themed land. Because everything that you see and hear is meant to serve the sto- ry, it sometimes happens that the most appropriate visual effects are those that don’t require the newest technologies. Very often, the most impressive visual ef- by Tim Foster fects you’ll see are also the simplest. Even though you may assume they are created with the help of state-of-the-art computers and holographic projectors, you may be surprised to learn that some of these effects go all the way back to the early days of theater (and beyond), and are in fact deceptively simple.

They’re Watching You… One of the most impressive effects that you’ll find in is also one of the first that you’ll encounter: the rotating busts in the library. Each one of them has their gaze focused squarely on you, and they follow you intently as you drift through the macabre study, slowly rotating in position as their gaze never shifts. But a moment’s reflection will give you pause; how could these busts rotate to stay focused on you, yet appear to be simultaneously staring at the occupants of the Doom Buggies in front of you and behind you? Surely this must involve a highly so- phisticated combination of motion technology, projections, and synchronous move- ments. Surprisingly though, the effect is very simple. (If you’d rather not know the Tim Foster is the creator of secret, you may want to skip ahead to the next page and hunt for Hidden Mickeys!) Your brain’s visual perception is working in reverse, by interpreting the movement of the light and shadows as movement of the bust itself. Confusing? Try looking at a Halloween mask from the back and slowly move it side to side (preferably in the dark with a strong light behind you). The effect may not be as convincing, but after a few moments you may notice a “shift” in how you’re seeing the mask. In other words, it will seem as if the mask is facing toward you and rotating, just like the busts in the Haunted Mansion. If it still doesn’t make sense, a quick Internet search will bring up numerous videos of the effect in action. The effect is so convincing that Disney even patented their own improved meth- od of creating the illusion. Basically, the technique involves flattening out the nega-

Walt and Roy Disney had one person to thank for the phenomenal success of product placement and marketing: Kay Kamen. Herman Samuel “Kay” Kamen was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 27, 1892. His early career was as a merchant and an advertising man, a background that would help refine his later work marketing Disney characters. His first marketing firm, Kamen-Blair, worked hard to sell and promote retail products such as chil- dren’s toys and games. Kamen’s national reputation was set early on with his suc- cessful promotion of the 1920’s comedy short series Our Gang, featuring the likeness of Buckwheat and Pete (the pit bull dog) on various products. Walt and Roy Disney, in the infancy of their company, understood the popularity of Mickey Mouse and the benefits they would reap from his likeness on products. The first licensing contract they signed was with The George Borgfeldt Company, who produced Mickey and products such as handkerchiefs and plates. However, the quality wasn’t up to the Disney standard, and a new licensing agreement was sought. In 1932, Kamen, now based out of Kansas City, cold-called Walt about his services. Two days later, Kamen was in for a face-to-face meeting to finish the deal. Kamen squarely sold himself and his services to Walt and Jamie Hecker has been a lifelong Roy and signed a contract to be Disney’s sole licensing representative. Imagine my excitement when I heard that Disney Springs was welcoming a new restaurant, themed after Indy’s pilot from the Indiana Jones movies, Jock Lind- sey. The dining establishment (which is more of a lounge) is called Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar. This new location opened recently and I knew I had to surprise my family on opening day. My son was so excited to see this dining establishment, since it was themed after one of his favorite movies. Do you remember Jock Lindsey? You may By Allison Jones remember him from the first film in the series, . Do you re- member that first scene when Indiana Jones was running for his life to the plane? Jock Lindsey was the pilot! Once they were in the air, Indy realized there was a huge snake at his feet. That snake was Reggie, Jock’s pet. You will see references to the snake throughout the lounge, including the boat outside named Reggie. You may also see Reggie’s cage inside the restaurant, but watch out…the cage is open! The Jock Lindsey Hangar Bar is located in the old section of Pleasure Island in Disney Springs, right next to The Boathouse. From the distance you can see the big hangar that houses an outdoor seating area, and huge dry-docked boat. According to the backstory, Jock Lindsey always wanted to own a bar. While flying Indiana Jones around Florida looking for the Fountain of Youth, he found this great spot right on a lake (perfect for fishing and snakes). This 1940s airplane hangar-turned dive bar was just perfect for Jock. Photo © Disney 25 · Celebrations Traveling With Tweenagers o you think Walt Disney World is just for “little kids”? Many people do, but it is Dnot! Many families travel to the Walt Disney World Resort every year, with chil- dren of all ages in tow. Take my family for example, comprised of two children that are 12 and 5! Or what about the family with children who are all over the age of 11? Traveling to Walt Disney World with “tweenagers” can be fun and magical for the whole family. Think about it….they don’t need naps, they can stay up to enjoy those super late Extra Magic Hours, and they’re tall enough to ride everything! There is By Carrie Hurst much fun to be had at the Magic Kingdom during Extra Magic Hours, and I know your “tweenagers” will love it! In this issue, I’ll be sharing tips for traveling to Walt Disney World with those tweenagers, in hopes that your next Walt Disney World vacation with older children is extra magical! Get your tweenagers involved in the planning process. Encourage them to choose some restaurants they would like to try. Give them the opportunity to make a list of the top attractions they don’t want to miss as you select your FastPasses, and even let them have a say in where you stay! Choose a resort that gives everyone plenty of space. This can come in a va- riety of ways. Perhaps a Family Suite at Disney’s All Star Music or Art of Resort is the answer. Or, a one- or two-bedroom villa at one of the Deluxe properties. If a Deluxe is not in your budget, consider two rooms at a value or a moderate cat- egory resort. This gives everyone plenty of sleeping space, two full bathrooms, and room to spread out. Tweens like their own space, and having the option of spread- ing out to hang out while not in the parks can make everyone happier! Use the Disney vacation as an opportunity to expose them to nicer dining and even more eclectic foods. Any child of any age can be picky when it comes to eating, but tweenagers are more likely to venture out and try something new. Plus, Carrie Hurst is a travel agent they can sit longer through a sit down meal, giving you the opportunity to try some with Destinations in Florida, spe- cializing in family travel, especially of the great, more diverse dining locations at Walt Disney World. One parent can take the younger one back to rest or swim, while the others spends some quality time in the parks with the older ones. This gives them the opportunity to ride some of the more thrilling attractions, explore the parks from a different perspective, and spend some one on one time with a parent. Plan some down time. Older kids will enjoy shopping at Disney Springs, visit- ing the miniature golf courses at Walt Disney World, and even the Boardwalk area. Full episodes were aired that focused on the four major sections of the park: Fanta- syland, , , and Tomorrowland. The televised promotion of the park helped to make its opening a smashing success, despite genuine logisti- cal issues on opening day and beyond. Walt and his Imagineers worked to improve the park and expand it as technology and funding allowed. Just four years later, By Jamie Hecker the , , and The Disneyland-Alweg Monorail System all opened to critical and lasting acclaim. To help promote the attractions within the park, the biggest and splashiest ap- proaches, such as television, weren’t always necessary. For example, Disney relied heavily on the low-concept approach of attractions posters in Disneyland, and this approach continues to this day. Guests arriving at Disneyland and entering through the tunnels into Main Street, U.S.A. would see dozens of posters extolling the virtues of the early attractions. Said Mary Sklar, retired Imagineer, “a lot of the posters were colorful and beautiful to look at, gave people direction, and an understanding of what was in the park. Often they were promoting something in the future. They were decorative first of all.” When effectively done, Disney posters can quickly grab the viewer’s attention and convey, oftentimes without words, the excitement and nature of the attraction or show. Posters, like pictures, could be ‘worth a thousand words.’ The Disney poster quickly became a mainstay in all Disney theme parks, often serving as a time capsule entry in the history of Disney parks. Font, color choices, and graphic styles lent themselves to different eras. Artwork ©Disney 73 · Celebrations Dodecohedron By Tim Foster

On this particular day, I was taking a journey back to the prehistoric age at the Dino Institute in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. During my time there, I happened to stumble into a Time Rover, only to find myself transported back to the age of the dinosaurs. I saw many fearsome creatures there, including a Carnotaurus, a Styracosaurus, and a Velociraptor. When I finally made my way back to the present day, I learned that an Iguanodon had travelled back with me, and was now running amok throughout the park. That reminded me of another dinosaur called a Dodecahedron that I had also heard about. I figured that the search for the Iguanodon was in good hands, so I thought I would search out the elusive Dodecahedron for myself.

I recalled the Bill Nye the Science Guy, who had welcomed me to the Dino Institute, could also be found in Epcot, and I thought that would be the best place to start my quest. And indeed, I found him over at Ellen’s Energy Adventure, which among other things took you on a tour through the land of dinosaurs. Among the dinosaurs I discovered was the similarly-named Trachodon (which means “rough tooth”), a duckbill dinosaur. Unfortunately, there was no Dodecahedron to be found.

I next traveled to Spaceship Earth, knowing that I would be boarding another sort of time traveling machine. The first scene I came upon featured a clan of Neanderthals fighting for survival against a giant mammoth, with the next scene showing a cavern that was home to a family of cave dwellers, who were just discovering the power of language. Unfortunately, that was as far back in time as we would go, nowhere near the age of the dinosaurs. I decided to continue my search elsewhere (but little did I know that my quarry was nearer than I thought!).

74 · Celebrations Thinking back to Albert Einstein’s presence in the Jeopardy portion of Ellen’s Energy Adventure, I suddenly remembered the former existence of a science room over at the Imagination pavilion, which featured a large machine that allowed you to examine the finer workings of nature, including the growth of plants, the formation of crystals, and outer space itself. I hoped I would find a further dinosaur connection here since I knew that Figment’s current voice was provided by David Goelz, who had briefly provided the voice of Earl Sinclair on the TV series Dinosaurs, which was produced in association with Walt Disney Television. Alas, there was no dinosaur to be found, but as I exited the building and looked at the glass pyramid, a thought suddenly struck me.

The Einstein connection that I had made to the Imagination pavilion was indeed significant, but not in the realm of natural science. Rather, the answer was in the field of mathematics (a fact that should have been apparent to me due to Einstein’s mathematical scribblings on his Jeopardy podium). As I looked at the Imagination pavilion’s pyramid, I recalled that in geometry, a pyramid is a polyhedron formed by connecting a polygonal base and a point, called the apex. What did that have to do with dinosaurs? Well, nothing, but that was where my initial assumption had led me astray.

A dodecahedron, as it turned out, was not a dinosaur, but rather a geometric figure. Specifically, a dodecahedron was a polyhedron, like a pyramid, but one that had twelve faces. But what significance did that have? It turns out that the grand sphere of Spaceship Earth is a derivative of a pentakis dodecahedron (a dodecahedron with a pentagonal pyramid covering each face). The intricate structure of Spaceship Earth is comprised of 11,324 silvered facets, which makes for a truly awe-inspiring sight. I was a bit relieved that the dodecahedron wasn’t a dinosaur after all. Because of my frightful encounter with the Carnotaurus at DINOSAUR, I realized that I could do with a bit of relaxing time travel…
