Stories Behind Walt
Disney World: The Carousel of
Progress
Living in the Moment
A visit to Walt Disney World, especially for the first-time Guest, can be a whirlwind of attraction hopping, dining reservations, and meticulous planning. Although an oft-repeated tip is to slow down and enjoy the magic, sometimes that’s hard to do when you realize you have 6:00 dining reservations at the Wilderness Lodge and you’ve just left the Haunted Mansion—at 5:45! Or when you’re racing to Toy Story Mania! first thing in the morning to get your FastPasses before they run out for the day. Sometimes you just don’t have time to leisurely seek out those small treasures and hidden secrets, or to relax for an hour and two on a bench enjoying a calm lunch and doing some people watching. But the one thing you can always do is to enjoy the moment. Waiting in line? Instead of worrying about where you’ll be racing once you leave the attraction, take the opportunity to enjoy the details of the queue area. Heading to World Showcase for IllumiNations at the last minute? Find the rose pathway by the Imagination Pavilion (which is a bit shorter anyway) and take the time to, pardon the phrase, stop and smell the roses (albeit briefly). Anxiously waiting for the parade to start? Take a moment to visually explore your surroundings at Main Street, U.S.A.
Even if you’re walking (or jogging!) from attraction to attraction, take off those blinders and enjoy the journey. You don’t need to stop and explore every detail, but you can enjoy the western flavor of Frontierland, the futuristic ambience of Tomorrowland, or the exotic details of Asia as you race to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Space Mountain, or Expedition Everest. Listen to the music. Drink in your surroundings. Doing so will let you appreciate the journey, and it’ll also build your anticipation for the adventure that awaits you!
Let the wonder of Walt Disney World envelop you and immerse yourself in the magic. If you can take the time and seek out the hidden treasures to be discovered, so much the better. But even if your schedule doesn’t allow you the luxury of “taking your time,” you can still spend the time you do have enjoying the magic—by living in the moment and letting the magic come to you.
Enjoy the Magic!

Everything Old is New Again
What makes Walt Disney World so memorable, and for many of us, truly magical, isn’t necessarily the thrill we get from flying on Soarin’, the childlike grins that cross our faces as we sail over the rooftops of London on Peter Pan’s Flight, or even the outright giddiness we experience when they bring over yet another skewer of Marinated Sirloin Steak during dinner at ’Ohana. No, for most of us, it’s the memories we have: memories of our first visits, time spent with family and friends, the awe of a ballroom scene in the
Haunted Mansion, or even coming face to face with a Yeti (or Princess) for the very first time.
Walt Disney once said, “Times and conditions change so rapidly that we must keep our aim constantly focused on the future.” And with that focus on the future and change, we sometimes lament when those alterations involve things that we love in Walt Disney World. Some changes, while positive and an ultimate improvement upon our experiences, might result in the loss of an attraction or show that we have come to enjoy and cherish so much. But every so often, those “lost” attractions or shows come back—again. And that, my friends, brings about a whole new world of opportunity, not just for those of us who remember, but for a new generation of Disney enthusiasts who can experience them for the first time.
Such is the case in the Disney Parks this year, when Captain EO and the Main Street Electrical Parade return to Walt Disney World. These are two examples of how we’re able to enjoy something that we might have cherished and missed from many years ago, and also have the opportunity to share them with a new generation of Disney fans. An opportunity to make a new set of memories stands before us.
Imagine if you will the joy on your child’s face the first time he or she hears the Baroque Hoedown resonating down a darkened Main Street, U.S.A. Or think about the smile that appears on your face when the lights dim at the Imagination Pavilion and Michael Jackson, Hooter, and Fuzzball appear on screen after so many years.
I live by the tenet that we must always “Keep Moving Forward,” but sometimes progress is made not by moving ahead, but by looking back into the past. Now if we could just find a way to dig out the old 20,000
Leagues Under the Sea lagoon, rebuild Horizons, and resurrect Mr. Toad.

great to see overlooked attractions like the WDW Railroad and the Maharajah Jungle Trek. However, there were exceptional pieces that stood out among the rest. One was the writing of Bill Chemerka and his information-heavy article about Davy Crockett and his influence in Disney, both in film and in the parks. Also, the ‘Stories Behind Walt Disney World” segment of Body Wars was absolutely phenomenal. Jim Korkis blends Disney history and science into an informative and entertaining read, and I hope to see him write more for this (hopefully) new “SBWDW” segment.

Hi! My daughter spotted this hidden Mickey on her bed at Port Orleans. I hope it counts as she was highly delighted with her find. The other picture is of her getting make up tips from one of the ugly sisters at the Grand Floridian, happy days. Here’s to many more happy days in the future.

I agree that Bill’s article was very entertaining and informative, and we are very fortunate to have Jim Korkis as part of the team. You’ll find another in his series of“Stories Behind Walt Disney World” in this and future issues!

Glad We Could Help, Mickey!
Dear Celebrations Staff,
We have been subscribing to your magazine from the very beginning and have loved every single issue. My two kids, Jack age 7 & Aerin age 8, also enjoy reading Celebrations and especially love the kids’ section. We live in China and Celebrations helps us feel connected to our home country. Every vacation we take, we make sure we bring along at least one copy of the magazine. On our most recent trip to Tokyo Disney we packed the March/April 2010 edition in our backpack to carry with us in the park. It made the time waiting in lines go by much faster and we had fun comparing the different Disney parks. We even showed the Main Mouse the article about the Top Ten Things You Didn’t Know About Minnie. Mickey thought that was pretty interesting. Thanks for such a top quality publication and we look forward to the next issue!
