Name: Tiffany Lo (9) Class: 6A a Journal – the Hong Kong Name: Tiffany Lo (9) Class: 6A A journal – the Hong Kong Disneyland 10th March 2010 Last Wednesday, I went to the Hong Kong Disneyland with my classmates. We joined the Y.E.S. programme on that day. During the programme, there were many learning activities. We learnt synergy and how to create the illusion of 3D in a theater experience. We played the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters. We used the laser guns to fight for the scores. We were very excited. Then, we played the Mad Hatter Tea Cup. It was very funny to sit in a big cup. After that, we enjoyed the Mickey’s Philharmagic. It was a 3D show. It was amazing. Donald Duck came out from the screen. At last, we went to watch the Festival of the Lion King. The show was full of music. Before we went back to school, we also played some games. I was happy but very tired on that day. I felt very dizzy because the cup turned round fast. After that, we watched a 3D movie in the theatre. Its name was Mickey’s PhilharMagic. It was interesting and funny. I thought it was a 4D movie because some water and some fragrance splashed into us during the show time. Before our lunch, we watched the show which was called ‘Festival of the Lion King’. The story was about the Lion King, his son and other animals. I thought it was the most interesting show in Disneyland. After lunch, we played many games until we left. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE Hong Kong Dreams and Disney Fantasies: How Hong Kong Disneyland (Controversially) Indigenizes Space, Labor, and Consumption A Dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology by Jenny Banh March 2014 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Yolanda T. Moses, Chairperson Dr. Christina Schwenkel Dr. Lynda S. Bell Dr. Thomas C. Patterson Copyright by Jenny Banh 2014 The Dissertation of Jenny Banh is approved: Committee Chairperson University of California, Riverside ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank those Hong Kong residents who took time out of their busy schedules to be interviewed. They were truly kind and often further recommended more people to interview. During my time in the field I taught literature, journalism, and SATs to HK students and their kindness was a hug whenever I needed it. They taught me as a lot about the liminality of Hong Kong culture. My dissertation committee of Yolanda Moses, Christine Schwenkel, Tracy Fisher, Michael Kearney, Thomas Patterson, and Lynda Bell guided me steadfastly. I would also like to acknowledge Dr. Michael Kearney who was a wonderful kind advisor and I miss him often. Lynda Bell reined me in and gave me a lot of structure, information, and guidance that I am very grateful for. Dr. Bell also made me rethink of HK history and space. Christine Schwenkel kindly challenged me and pushed me to rethink the “big picture” including theory and a priori assumption. Dr. Schwenkel made my writing more professional and theoretically sound. Tracy Fisher gave me practical time management advice. I would also like to thank Thomas Patterson who has been such a great captain of our entire anthropology department for many years.
