An overview of Nepenthes in the Philippines is presented. Four new species, Nepenthes extincta sp. nov., N. kitanglad sp. nov., N. kurata sp. nov. and N. leyte sp. nov. are described and illustrated from the Philippines and placed in the Nepenthes alata group. An updated circumscription and key to the species of the group is provided. Delimitation and comparison with the Regiae group is given. All four of the newly described species are assessed as threatened using the International Union for the Conservation of Nature 2012 standard, and one, N. extincta sp. nov. is considered likely to be already extinct due to open-cast mining. Logging and conversion of forest habitat are thought to be the main threats to the other three species. Key words. Conservation, Nepenthes alata group, Mindanao, threatened, ultramafic. • Production of Edible Seaweed Flags: Danish Small Islands & Bornholm Islands of Anholt, Fejø, Skarø, Årø, Bjørnø, Ertholmene, Bornholm, Thurø (Denmark)
European Commission Project Case Study Production of edible seaweed FLAGs: Danish Small Islands & Bornholm Islands of Anholt, Fejø, Skarø, Årø, Bjørnø, Ertholmene, Bornholm, Thurø (Denmark) Project overview Anholt This project involves cooperation between stakeholders from two Danish FLAGs, one on the island of Bornholm and the other covering DENMARK SWEDEN smaller islands, in commercially exploiting sea- weed, an overlooked resource in Danish waters. Arø Ertholmene By promoting the sustainable cultivation, har- Thurø Bornholm vesting and processing of seaweed, the project Bjørnø Skarø will assist in diversifying the local economies of Fejø the islands, thereby helping to maintain strong local populations and vibrant communities. GERMANY Context and Key Challenges The small Danish islands and Bornholm are remote areas, threatened by depopulation and a loss of business opportuni- ties. Seaweed production presents a potential new opportu- nity for local entrepreneurs, including fishermen. If exploited successfully, it could help to broaden the range of products offered locally and lead to increased earnings for local food producers and restaurants. While there is no tradition of cultivating, harvesting, or exploiting seaweed in Denmark, with the growing popularity of sushi and the development of the New Nordic Cuisine, Danish seaweed is increasingly in demand. Danish waters pro- duce, or can produce, similar seaweed species to those grown in East Asia or in the Atlantic. The quality of this seaweed is excellent, and for some purposes even better than imported dried seaweeds because of the limited salinity levels in some parts of the Danish waters. Many of the 27 small Danish Islands with less than 1 000 inhabitants are, together with Bornholm, well known for food production.

  • Geology of the Northern Part of the Southeast Three Sisters
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Karl C. Wozniak for the degree of Master of Science the Department cf Geology presented on February 8, 1982 Title: Geology of the Northern Part of the Southeast Three Sisters Quadrangle, Oregon Redacted for Privacy Abstract approved: E. M. Taylorc--_, The northern part of the Southeast Three Sisters quadrangle strad- dles the crest of the central High Cascades of Oregon. The area is covered by Pleistocene and Holocene volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks that were extruded from a number of composite cones, shield volcanoes, and cinder cones. The principal eruptive centers include Sphinx Butte, The Wife, The Husband, and South Sister volcanoes. Sphinx Butte, The Wife, and The Husband are typical High Cascade shield and composite vol- canoes whose compositions are limited to basalt and basaltic andesite. South Sister is a complex composite volcano composed of a diverse assem- blage of rocks. In contrast with earlier studies, the present investi- gation finds that South Sister is not a simple accumulation of andesite and dacite lavas; nor does the eruptive sequence display obvious evolu- tionary trends or late stage divergence to basalt and rhyolite. Rather, the field relations indicate that magmas of diverse composition have been extruded from South Sister vents throughout the lifespan of this volcano. The compositional variation at South Sister is. atypical of the Oregon High Cascade platform. This variation, however, represents part of a continued pattern of late Pliocene and Pleistocene magmatic diver- sity in a local region that includes Middle Sister, South Sister, and Broken Top volcanoes. Regional and local geologic constraints combined with chemical and petrographic criteria indicate that a local subcrustal process probably produced the magmas extruded fromSouth Sister, whereas a regional subcrustal process probably producedthe magmas extruded from Sphinx Butte, The Wife, and The Husband.

  • The Asean Heritage Parks Are Educational and Inspiratio
Factsheet : Asean Heritage Parks Overview of Asean Heritage Parks (AHPs) The Asean Heritage Parks are educational and inspirational sites of high conservation importance , preserving a complete spectrum of representative ecosystems of the Asean region. These parks embody the aspirations of the people of the ten Asean nations to conserve their natural treasures. It was established to generate greater awareness, pride, appreciation, enjoyment and conservation of the Asean region’s rich natural heritage through a regional network of representative protected areas. A designation as an AHP is both an honour and a responsibility. The country accepts the responsibility to ensure the best possible level of protection is afforded to the site. The Asean Declaration on Heritage Parks In December 2003 at Yangon, all the Ministers of Environment of Asean member states accepted the principles of Asean Heritage Parks (AHPs) and jointly agreed to participate within the AHPs program to establish, develop and protect the designated parks. The 2003 declaration constitutes a reiteration of an earlier agreement in 1884, initiated by a smaller Asean. This declaration underscores the common cooperation between member states for the development and implementation of regional conservation and management action plans. Criteria for Nomination/ Award: Criteria Description Ecological An intact ecological process and capability to regenerate with completeness minimal human intervention. Representativeness The variety of ecosystems or species typical of a particular region. Naturalness In natural condition such as a second-growth forest or a rescued coral reef formation, with natural processes still going on. High conservation Has global significance for the conservation of important or importance valuable species, ecosystems or genetic resources; evokes respect for nature when people see it, as well as feeling of loss when its natural condition is lost.
