  • Brains and Intelligence
BRAINS AND INTELLIGENCE The EQ or Encephalization Quotient is a simple way of measuring an animal's intelligence. EQ is the ratio of the brain weight of the animal to the brain weight of a "typical" animal of the same body weight. Assuming that smarter animals have larger brains to body ratios than less intelligent ones, this helps determine the relative intelligence of extinct animals. In general, warm-blooded animals (like mammals) have a higher EQ than cold-blooded ones (like reptiles and fish). Birds and mammals have brains that are about 10 times bigger than those of bony fish, amphibians, and reptiles of the same body size. The Least Intelligent Dinosaurs: The primitive dinosaurs belonging to the group sauropodomorpha (which included Massospondylus, Riojasaurus, and others) were among the least intelligent of the dinosaurs, with an EQ of about 0.05 (Hopson, 1980). Smartest Dinosaurs: The Troodontids (like Troödon) were probably the smartest dinosaurs, followed by the dromaeosaurid dinosaurs (the "raptors," which included Dromeosaurus, Velociraptor, Deinonychus, and others) had the highest EQ among the dinosaurs, about 5.8 (Hopson, 1980). The Encephalization Quotient was developed by the psychologist Harry J. Jerison in the 1970's. J. A. Hopson (a paleontologist from the University of Chicago) did further development of the EQ concept using brain casts of many dinosaurs. Hopson found that theropods (especially Troodontids) had higher EQ's than plant-eating dinosaurs. The lowest EQ's belonged to sauropods, ankylosaurs, and stegosaurids. A SECOND BRAIN? It used to be thought that the large sauropods (like Brachiosaurus and Apatosaurus) and the ornithischian Stegosaurus had a second brain.

(2020) described new egg specimens for two dinosaur species, 14 identified as the first soft-shelled dinosaur eggs. The authors used phylogenetic comparative 15 methods to reconstruct eggshell type in a sample of reptiles, and identified the eggs of 16 dinosaurs and archosaurs as ancestrally soft-shelled, with three independent acquisitions of a 17 hard eggshell among dinosaurs. This result contradicts previous hypotheses of hard-shelled 18 eggs as ancestral to archosaurs and dinosaurs.

  • Short Review of the Present Knowledge of the Sauropoda
PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THE SAUROl'ODA.-HUENE. 121 SHORT REVIEW OF THE PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THE SAUROPODA. BY DR. FRIEDRICH BARON HUENE, PROFESSOR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TUBINGEN, GERMANY. THE Sauropoda are the hugest continental animals the earth has ever seen. They lived from the middle Jurassic to the Danian period of the upper most Cretaceous. Much has been written about them, but nevertheless their natura! classification and development do not yet appear in a desirable clearness. In this respect the immense size of the Sauropoda has been an obstacle. The satisfactory excavation of such gigant.ic skeletons is difficult, and the preparation, which is still more important, needs trained, skilful men working for years. The scientific value of a skeleton is determined in advance by the degree of care by which, during the excavation, the original articulation or the original positions of the bones to each other in the rock is dealt "\vith by sketch-plans in scale as to make sure specially the sequence of the vertebræ. Because of the failure of this in many cases, we still know so astonishingly little about the natura! classification of the Sauropoda as a whole. Most has been written and spoken on the North American Sauropoda. Too little has been done with the earlier Sauropoda. The knowledge of the Upper Cretaceous Sauropoda until now is quite insufficient. The large amount of Tendaguru Sauropoda at Berlin and the recent excavations of the Carnegie Museum at Pittsburgh have not yet been described ; they will probably complete and alter our ideas of the development and classification of the Sauropoda.

  • 66 Million-Year-Old Dinosaur Eggs Found! Four Students Found Rare Dinosaur Egg Fossils While on a Walk Through a Rural Area of Southern China
3rd – 9th June 2019 2019 The pistachios that need police protection! Police on the Italian island of Sicily are preparing for this year’s pistachio harvest. Police captain, Nicolo Morandi, says at least six officers are going to patrol in the daytime, and up to 12 at night, and if they feel they need to, they will launch the police helicopter! The town of Bronte is home to the world’s most-prized variety of the seed – the pistachio verde di Bronte. One kilogram of “Sicily’s green gold” seeds, unshelled, typically costs £13.45. The pistachio trees grow on the slopes of Mount Etna, an active volcano. Unfortunately, because the pistachios are so expensive criminals try to steal them, often trying to make their escape with as many pistachios as they can. Pictured: A typical photo of the pistachio verde di Bronte. 66 million-year-old Dinosaur eggs found! Four students found rare dinosaur egg fossils while on a walk through a rural area of southern China. They decided to report their find to a local museum for further examination, which later called in experts from the Chinese Academy of Science. The "strange stones" were confirmed as dinosaur egg fossils, dating back to the late Cretaceous Period which began 145 million years ago and ended 66 million years ago. Dinosaurs alive during the Cretaceous Period include the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the feathered Velociraptor and the three-horned Triceratops. The first, and biggest to be found so far, fossilised dinosaur eggs were football shaped Hypselosaurus eggs found in France in 1869.
