OLYMPIA MOKATA, the beautiful and ac- complished subject of the following memoir, was a young lady of Ferrara, educated as a companion and model to the daughters of the house of Este from her princely ; and, high endowments, natural and acquired, the friend and idol of the most learned men of her day. Having embraced the Reformed tenets, then beginning to excite suspicion in Italy, she narrowly escaped persecution in her own country by marrying and fol- X INTRODUCTORY NOTICE lowing to his native Germany, an amiable youth of similar opinions. It was, how- ever, only to be plunged by an untoward fate in all the horrors and vicissitudes of war. Successively the inhabitant of va- rious besieged cities, and hunted from one to another by the utmost virulence of bi- gotry pestilence, famine and peril were her portion during the brief remainder of a life, whose termination they accelerated at the of when she early age twenty-nine ; gently expired, lamented by all who admired her talents or appreciated her virtues. Elegant poems (chiefly on sacred subjects) in Greek and Latin, and familiar letters, breathing the very soul of unobtrusive piety, establish her claim to the admiration of posterity, and the affection of a large circle of sorrowing friends. Her death took place at Heidelberg, in 1555. It is to brief but beautiful notices of this interesting person, occurring in the admirable INTRODUCTORY NOTICE. XI work of Dr. M'Crie on the progress and sup- pression of the Reformation in Italy, that the authoress is indebted for the pleasure derived from the compilation of the following pages. The motive to which they owed their origin was simply the desire of becoming herself better acquainted with, and introducing to other unlearned readers, the life and writings of a Christian heroine uniting, in so rare and eminent a degree as Olympia Morata, the qualities and accomplishments which en- gage human esteem, with the more imperish- " able treasures of that better part," of which early death itself could not deprive her. THE writer of these pages knows not how the discovery may have affected others, more learned, more callous, or more philosophical than her- self; but it was with a sense of strange and spirit-stirring emotion, that she first gathered, from the valuable work of her countryman, Dr. M'Crie, how bright, though brief a ray, the beacon-light of the blessed Reformation, once shed over now, alas ! universally benighted Italy. Introduction Since the EKD (Evangelical Church in Germany) has proclaimed a Luther or reformation decade in 2008 in order to celebrate the beginning of the reformation 500 years ago, the interest in what and how women contributed to the spreading of the new reformatory ideas and live style has been increasing in Germany. The situation has been completely different when I was studying evangelical theology in Marburg and Heidelberg in the beginning of the 1980th. In that time German scholars, or rather female scholars, only started to research the bible and church history about women's contribution, although in other countries, like in the USA, Roland H. Bainton (1894-1984) had already published his book “Women of the Reformation in Germany and Italy” in 1971. It is very significant that it took 24 years to translate this book into German. In 1995 it had become available as paperback issue with the title “Frauen der Reformation. Von Katharina von Bora bis Anna Zwingli”. It contains seven biographies and a summarized description of women of the Anabaptist movement. It quickly became very popular and in 1996 already the third edition was published. In our lectures and seminars we only heard about Martin Luther, his life as monk and his conversion, about Luther´s posting of theses in 1517 in Wittenberg, about his central reformatory scriptures in the 1520th and the bible translation. We had to learn the important milestones of the reformation like the Imperial Diets / Reichstage in Worms 1521 and

Vol. XVII (2012) 173-192 IL POTERE COME INTERCESSIONE: I TENTATIVI DI TRE DONNE NEL PROCESSO PER ERESIA A FANINO FANINI Giunia Totaro LASLAR, Université de Caen Basse-Normandie INTRODUZIONE Fra le prime manifestazioni dell’Inquisizione romana, la condanna di Fanino Fanini merita una menzione particolare, e ciò non solo per la piega che presero gli eventi, influenzati dal singolare carisma dell’eretico, ma in primo luogo per la cesura storica segnata dalla sua morte, per i personaggi coinvolti e per la natura delle trattative che precedettero l’esecuzione. La vicenda di Fanini, svoltasi tra il 1549 e il 1550, vede protagoniste le donne nel tentativo di guadagnare la grazia al condannato. L’impegno femminile in questo caso si configura come attività di mediazione e si oppone al potere maschile, rappresentato dal duca Ercole II d’Este, dai papi Paolo III e Giulio III, dall’inquisitore di Ferrara, Girolamo Papino, e dal cardinale Gian Pietro Carafa, membro influente del ramo oltranzista del collegio inquisitoriale. La particolarità del caso che qui si riassume deriva inoltre dal rango sociale, culturale e politico delle figure femminili coinvolte, poiché di Fanini s’interessarono una nobildonna, una principessa reale ed una delle più grandi figure di donne letterate del Cinquecento: Lavinia della Rovere (1521- 16011), Renata di Francia (1510-15752) ed Olimpia Morata (1526/7-15553). I fatti relativi alla condanna per eresia di Fanini sono appena documentati dalle fonti contemporanee perché se ne possa avere un’idea globale, e conviene 1 Su Lavinia della Rovere v. la voce corrispondente nel Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani (d’ora in poi DBI), con alcuni evidenti errori, tra cui la morte della Morata situata nel 1551 anziché nel 1555 (Frettoni 1989).

    Map 86 Paphlagonia Compiled by C. Foss, 1995 Introduction The map comprises ancient Paphlagonia, and extends into eastern Bithynia and the northernmost part of Galatia. Evidence for the ancient topography is most abundant on the coast, along the Roman roads, and in Galatia. Arrian’s Periplus Ponti Euxini (written c. A.D. 132), together with an earlier text by Menippus (c. 20 B.C.) and a related Late Antique anonymous work, describe the coast in great detail. Most of the sites named in these works can be located at least approximately, although a few resist identification; Müller’s commentary in GGM I remains valuable. For the Roman roads, ItMiller is uncritical; French (1981) is far more useful, but treats only one major road. The roads of Paphlagonia are presented in admirable detail by TIB Paphlagonien, those of northern Galatia likewise by TIB Galatien. The interior of Paphlagonia is a remote, mountainous country, cut off from the regions to the south by long, parallel ranges. Communication east and west is relatively easy; north and south, it is much more difficult. The country contains a few long, wide plains and river valleys, some of considerable fertility. In antiquity, the mountains were heavily forested. For the most part, the region was never densely populated. For a general description, see Leonhard (1915); and for an excellent account of some areas (including eastern Bithynia), with discussion of specific problems, note Robert (1980). RE Paphlagonia gives a full list of all named sites (cols. 2537-50) and of physical remains (2498-2510, 2515). Some features listed there do not appear on the map because of limited significance or uncertainty of dating.

    Cronología Abril a noviembre de 2002 Realizada por Juan Alberto Rial Abril 1.- ARGELIA : Veintiún militares argelinos mueren asesinados por un grupo armado, probablemente islamista, en la región de Saida, a unos 430 kilómetros al suroeste de Argel. En esa zona actúa el Grupo Islámico Armado (GIA), que rechaza la política de reconciliación nacional preconizada por el presidente Abdelaziz Buteflika. El 31 de marzo, Rachid Abu Turab fue designado emir (jefe) del GIA en sustitución de Antar Zuabri, muerto el 8 de febrero por las fuerzas de seguridad en Bufarik, a 35 kilómetros al sur de Argel. También se producen nuevos disturbios en varias localidades de la Cabilia argelina. Un manifestante resulta muerto y se producen muchos heridos. BRASIL: En una nota aparentemente atribuida a miembros del Ejército brasilero divulgada por Internet y dirigida a la nación, se afirma que 'la historia que no se apaga no se reescribe'. Defiende el Golpe de Estado del 31 de marzo de 1964 'fue un movimiento victorioso que rescató el respeto y la autoridad, restituyó el espíritu cívico y el amor propio de un pueblo amenazado en su autodeterminación y libre opción por la democracia'. La nota añade: 'Fue una fecha histórica en la que el Ejército consiguió frenar al comunismo'. ISRAEL: El Gobierno israelí dispone la extensión de la Operación Muro Defensivo a tres ciudades más (Qalqilya, Tulkarem y Belén). Once palestinos acusados de colaboracionismo con ISRAEL son asesinados en tres incidentes separados en Tulkarem (ocho), Qalqilya (dos) y Belén (uno). El joven muerto en Belén, se llama Mahmud Rahamie y es asesinado cerca de la iglesia de la Natividad acusándolo de haber enviado información por correo electrónico a los israelíes.

Angelo Camillo Decembrio was born in Milan in 1415, into a family of accomplished humanists: his father was Uberto Decembrio, and one of his older brothers was Pier Candido, the most famous of them all. Angelo studied in Milan with Gasparino Barzizza, then in Ferrara with the physi- cian Ugo Bensi and the renowned schoolmaster Guarino da Verona. He began his career by dividing his efforts between giving lessons and serving as a copyist for his brother, but in 1441 he and Pier Candido broke off relations permanently. Benzi introduced him into the humanist circle of Niccolò d’Este and his son Leonello; his travels took him to Milan, Bologna, Perugia, Burgundy, Spain, and the Aragonese court in Naples, but he returned often to Ferrara.
