Recognized as one of the most creative and dynamic shows of its kind, critics have hailed Ted and Marion Outerbridge as “the most successful magicians in Canada” (Montreal Gazette) and “champions of magic” (Bergedorfer Zeitung, Hamburg, Germany). As the largest and most successful touring illusion show in the country, it has received both the 2011 Award of Excellence from Ontario Contact and the 2010 Touring Artist of the Year award from the B.C. Touring Council. OUTERBRIDGE – Clockwork Mysteries takes its audience on a bizarre and fascinating journey through time. Within seconds of taking the stage, the Outerbridges fuse their revolutionary illusions with split-second artistry to hold viewers spellbound. With the help of an elaborate Victorian time machine, the performers and spectators travel back in time together. The audience is invited into a mysterious clock tower equipped with a variety of timekeeping devices. They become part of a race against time, experience time accelerating and slowing down, and participate in predicting the contents of a time capsule. Keeping their audience enthralled from the first astonishing illusion to the spectacular finale, the Outerbridges create an experience that far exceeds the expectations of every spectator. The experience of wonder “should come from the heart, not a magic store catalogue Ted Outerbridge” Performing professionally since 1982, Ted TED OUTERBRIDGE Outerbridge has been featured in theatres has been hailed by critics from coast to coast and on both sides of the Atlantic. The chem- istry between Marion and Ted onstage is phenomenal, and it’s clear that they are having the time of their lives in their performances of signature illusions such as “Time Machine,” “Tango Flotanta,” “The Woman in the Television,” “The Sword Basket” and “A Lady Divided.” Marion was born in Düsseldorf, Germany, and studied Ballet, Jazz, Character Dance and Tap under Gerda Elsner, one of the city’s most prestigious ballet teachers. At 16, Marion began her professional dance training at the State School of Theatre, Music and Dance in Arnhem, the Netherlands. She graduated at the top of her class and as a result she received a scholarship to study with the Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago company. ILLUSION AND SET DESIGN Illusions Unlimited was founded in 1988 by Ted Outerbridge to design, engineer, and build magic illusions and special effects for his performances. Ted wanted go beyond the boundaries of conventional illusions that are commercially produced and achieve complete creative freedom over what he presented. Today, under the direction of Ted and Marion Outerbridge, a group of talented individuals including metalworkers, cabinet makers, and special effects experts create the illusions and sets for the Outerbridges’ performances as well for the movie industry, television, live stage productions, and trade show exhibits. OUTERBRIDGE – CLOCKWORK MYSTERIES TANGO FLOTANTA takes place in different time periods, and the illusion and set design reflect this. The main set piece is a 14-foot-diameter clock face based on a clock that is on display at the Orsay Museum in France. The idea is that the audience is transported into a clock tower, and the environment is both immersive and open, with plenty of space for dramatic illusions and celebrations. Lighting is used to make the clock face come alive, take the audience to other places, and evoke different emotional responses. During the intense drama of the Time Machine illusion, the lighting from the clock face creates the illusion of traveling back in time. Each group should have someone to record their discussion and someone who will report out orally for the group. Present on a projector the video clip drawing comparisons between The Hunger Games and shows currently on Reality TV: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdmOwt77D2g) After watching the video clip, ask each group recorder to create two columns on a piece of paper. In one column, the group will list recent or current reality television shows that have similarities to the way reality television is portrayed in The Hunger Games. In the second column, list or explain some of those similarities. To clarify this assignment, ask the following two questions: 1. What are the rules that have been set up for The Hunger Games, particularly those that are intended to appeal to the television audience? 2. Are there any shows currently or recently on television that use similar rules or elements to draw a larger audience? Allow about 5 to 10 minutes for students to work in their small groups to complete their lists. Have students report out on their group work, starting with question #1. Repeat the report out process with question #2. Discuss as a large group the following questions: 1. The narrator in the video clip suggests that entertainments like The Hunger Games “desensitize us” to violence. How true do you think this is? 2.

DOMENICO DANTE FISM International President Dear President, Dear Friend in Magic, My philosophy has always been this: “facts speak for themselves”. You can check what I did in these three/six years, with the precious help of the Int. Vice Presidents and the Consultancy Groups, in my triennial report that will be sent to you soon. There is still a lot to do of course and this is why I am asking for the re-election (according to our Statutes for the last period of three years possible,) to accomplish something that is very important to me, since one of the main goals of FISM is to improve Magic and to raise the level of Magicians: - FISM Competition Compliance System (CCS) that will provide rules and services to Associated Societies to better Qualify their Competition and promote them as FISM Compliance Competition. - FISM Jury Qualification System (JQS) selecting and training qualified Judges to assure uniformed and high-quality judging all over the World. - To go on promoting FISM also outside the world of magic (including Academies and Universities). The Fism Board is already working on this matter and the success of the project matters to me. I want to thank you all for the support you gave to me and the Board during these years. It is a great reward for the really hard job we did. Kindest regards Domenico Dante DOMENICO DANTE FISM International President Dear President, Dear Friend in Magic, Ma philosophie a toujours été celle-ci : « Les faits parlent d’eux-mêmes ». That the remake was not as good as the original? This gut instinct to reject a performance’s interpretation of the text haunted me at the 2019 Stratford Festival. After falling in love with the written play, The Front Page (1928), I could not wait to see it staged. The quick wit, overlapping dialogue, and ever-present power dynamics would surely be impressive when performed live. By intermission, however, I felt disappointed but hopeful.

It was evident, early on, that this collection would benefitanyone serious about getting serious in magic. So here we are. Thanks to all the generous magicians who have allowed me to include their work in this collection. I am overwhelmed by the support they have shown. In particular, I wish to single out Darwin Ortiz, whose writings I admire greatly, and who went against a personal policy, and agreed to participate. I consider it a favor to me, and a favor to all those who will learn from his writings. Thanks, Darwin, for being flexible and generous. Thanks to Stephen Minch, whose encouragement and “pull” helped initiate the project. Irving Quant helped with the translation of “Fundamentals of Illusionism” by Juan Tamariz. Denis Behr suggested a few essays I was not familiar with.

Within the whole of dramatic literature there exists a body of plays which all contain elements of the magical, the mystical, the supernatural. Some of these plays have only overtones of the paranormal, but a great many more call for seemingly magical or supernatural events to be realized on the stage. As far back as the fifth century, B.C., the Greeks used devices like the mechane, or crane, to give the illusion of Perseus on his flying horse or of various gods descending from the heavens.
