It provides expectations and regulations, which pertain to interscholastic athletics of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), the Lancaster-Lebanon League, and the Cedar Crest High School and Middle School. Each athlete and parent/guardian has the responsibility of becoming familiar with the contents of this manual. Each athlete will adhere to the relevant procedures. 1 Philosophy The athletic program of the Cornwall-Lebanon School District is designed to provide competitive, wholesome experiences for student athletes. We attempt to develop positive social habits and attitudes. We are concerned about the values and behaviors we foster. Success will not be measured simply by wins or losses but by these intangible factors, which are major objectives for the program of athletics. The athletic program is in harmony with the general objectives of the Cornwall-Lebanon School District. At no time will the athletic program dominate the academic curriculum. To be eligible for interscholastic competition a pupil must pursue a curriculum approved by the principal and must maintain for the current semester or term a passing grade in at least four full credit subjects, or the equivalent, approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Evaluation of subject credits shall conform to the standards of the Department of Education. Scholastic eligibility shall be determined by the pupil’s progress in each subject of an approved curriculum. Scholastic eligibility is defined as maintaining an acceptable grade as certified by the principal. Eligibility shall be cumulative from the beginning of the semester and reported on a weekly basis. Athletics is a part of the total school program and emphasizes the continuing development of a well-rounded individual. Our main objective is to aid students in preparing full and rich lives through the program of athletics. Objectives A. To emphasize the proper ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct, and fair play. B. To provide opportunities that will allow students to learn to cope with problems and handle situations similar to those they might encounter in society. C. To foster school spirit, student spirit, school moral, and school pride. D. To promote the physical, mental, moral, and emotional well being of the participants. E. To encourage leadership, initiative, and good judgment. F. To develop the attitude that preparing and planning to win, and not just winning itself, is of primary importance. G. To provide opportunities to stimulate community interest for our school and our sports teams. Cornwall-Lebanon School District Waiver and Release of Liability Student Participation in 2020-2021 School Year The COVID-19 pandemic has presented school districts across the world with a myriad of challenges concerning this highly contagious illness that primarily attacks the upper respiratory system. Some severe outcomes have been reported in children, and a child with a mild or even asymptomatic case of COVID-19 can spread the infection to others who may be far more vulnerable. While it is not possible to eliminate all risk of furthering the spread of COVID-19, Cornwall-Lebanon School District (CLSD) will take necessary precautions and comply with guidelines, as feasible, from federal, state, and local governments, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Pennsylvania Department of Health (PDoH), Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) as well as the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), to reduce the risk of exposure to students, staff, and their families. All parents and guardians should be mindful that as long as there are cases of COVID-19 in the community, there are no strategies that can eliminate transmission risk within a school population. The goal is to keep transmission as low as possible to continue school activities safely. As knowledge regarding COVID-19 is constantly changing, CLSD reserves the right to adjust and implement precautionary health and safety methods as necessary to decrease the risk of exposure for our staff, students, and visitors. Please be aware that CLSD is subject to outside influences beyond our control that require our intervention. By signing this form, the Undersigned voluntarily agree to the following Waiver and Release of Liability. The Undersigned agree to release and discharge all claims for ourselves, our heirs, and as a parent or legal guardian for the Student named below, against CLSD, its Board of School Directors, successors, assigns, officers, agents, employees, and volunteers, and will hold them harmless from any and all liability or demands for personal injury, psychological injury, sickness, death, or claims resulting from personal injury or property damage, of any nature whatsoever which may be incurred by the Student or the Undersigned relating to or as a result of the Student’s participation in schooling, athletics and/or curricular activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Undersigned acknowledge attending school, participating in athletics and/or curricular activities may include a possible exposure to a communicable disease, including but not limited to, MRSA, influenza, or COVID-19. The Undersigned further acknowledge that they are aware of the risks associated with COVID-19 and that certain vulnerable individuals may have greater health risks associated with exposure to COVID-19, including individuals with serious underlying health conditions as listed at https://www.cdc.gov/ . While particular recommendations and personal discipline may reduce the risks associated with participating in educational activities during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Undersigned acknowledge that the risk of serious illness, medical complications and possible death does exist. We, the Undersigned, knowingly and freely assume all such risks, both known and unknown, even if arising from the negligence of others, and assume full responsibility for my Student’s education and/or participation in athletics and/or curricular activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. We willingly agree to comply with the stated recommendations put forth by CLSD to limit the exposure and spread of COVID-19 and other communicable diseases. We understand that as parents/guardians we must monitor the health of my Student daily prior to beginning the school day and communicate any health concerns with School District officials using the School Symptom Screening Tool developed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) (see below). 2 We understand our responsibility to practice and reinforce good prevention habits at home to reduce the spread of COVID-19. We will keep Student home when he or she is sick or shows signs of symptoms related to COVID-19. We certify that the Student is in good physical condition or believe the Student to be in good physical condition and allow participation in school, sports or any other curricular activity at our own risk.
