These include three City projects—the zoning for transit-oriented development (TOD) within the Kalihi and Downtown Neighborhoods, the Kapālama Canal Catalytic Project, and the Iwilei/Kapālama TOD Infrastructure Needs Assessment. Honolulu Community College (HCC), the State Department of Hawaiian Homelands (DHHL), and other State Agencies are also preparing master plans for their lands in the area. The city has identified the Kapālama Station area as one of the “most transformative areas” on O‘ahu. With change imminent, KS is evaluating its Kapālama Kai lands, which encompass 105 acres of commercial properties. The KKP envisions an innovative, mixed-use community for kama‘āina in O‘ahu’s urban core. The KKP aligns commercial properties, educational outcomes and community building to direct a 20-year vision for Kamehameha Schools’ 105 acres in the area. This vision also recognizes the importance of maintaining a healthy industrial land base near Honolulu Harbor with plans to maintain roughly half of these properties in existing uses. The KKP core themes relate to fostering a strong industrial mixed-use business base, kama‘āina housing and expected improvements to transportation. KAPĀLAMA KAI PLAN VISION STATEMENT Kapālama is place of transformation where ‘āina serves as a foundation for connectivity and access, enabling an inclusive mixed-use community of families. Kapālama stimulates industry and commerce, building on its proven performance as an economic resource and job center to host new ventures. Kapālama creates opportunities for physical and programmatic connections that advance educational outcomes, enable servant leaders, and amplify impacts for ‘ohana and communities within and beyond the region.
