European Review - Fall 2014 (in press) A brief history of wine in South Africa Stefan K. Estreicher Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX 79409-1051, USA Vitis vinifera was first planted in South Africa by the Dutchman Jan van Riebeeck in 1655. The first wine farms, in which the French Huguenots participated – were land grants given by another Dutchman, Simon Van der Stel. He also established (for himself) the Constantia estate. The Constantia wine later became one of the most celebrated wines in the world. The decline of the South African wine industry in the late 1800’s was caused by the combination of natural disasters (mildew, phylloxera) and the consequences of wars and political events in Europe. Despite the reorganization imposed by the KWV cooperative, recovery was slow because of the embargo against the Apartheid regime. Since the 1990s, a large number of new wineries – often, small family operations – have been created. South African wines are now available in many markets. Some of these wines can compete with the best in the world. Stefan K. Estreicher received his PhD in Physics from the University of Zürich. He is currently Paul Whitfield Horn Professor in the Physics Department at Texas Tech University. His biography can be found at http://jupiter.phys.ttu.edu/stefanke. One of his hobbies is the history of wine. He published ‘A Brief History of Wine in Spain’ (European Review 21 (2), 209-239, 2013) and ‘Wine, from Neolithic Times to the 21st Century’ (Algora, New York, 2006). The earliest evidence of wine on the African continent comes from Abydos in Southern Egypt. -

VAN IUEBEECK DAY AND THE NEW JERUSALEM Identity, community and violence in the eighteenth and nineteenth century Cape. Stanley Trapido The eighteenth century colonial settlements that were established in the Atlantic world by European mercantile powers, revealed similar identities arising from similar social and economic structures. Among the most important of these was the institution of bound labour - indentured as well as slave - both of which must be seen as playing key roles in determining settler identities. Slaveholders were, in the last resort, dependent upon the metropolitan societies which underwrote their safety, both domestically - against slave violence and that of indigenous peoples - and externally, in the unstable international environment of predatory foreign powers. The fear that their own slaves would rise up against them was an important factor in the making of settler consciousness. But so was the conviction that too much metropolitan supervision was counter-productive and that they could cope all the better with slave uprisings if they could contain and restrain the intrusiveness of metropolitan supervision. As their experience of their new worlds expanded, it became a commonplace for settlers to develop disdainful attitudes towards the mother country, while at the same time, intimately identifying themselves with it in the event of external and internal danger. These factors imposed upon the new communities a need to come to terms with the "motherland" and with the institutional, economic and psychological links that bound them. Such links varied from class to class within any settler society. Equally, they varied with the regional origins of the immigrants. All settlers were trapped by the dilemma of being "At once the same and yet not the same, as the country of their origin", but there were advantages in the duality. -

rik Van WELie Slave Trading and Slavery in the Dutch Colonial Empire: A Global Comparison INTRODUCTION From the early seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century, slavery played a fundamental role in the Dutch colonial empire.1 All overseas possessions of the Dutch depended in varying degrees on the labor of slaves who were imported from diverse and often remote areas. Over the past decades numer- ous academic publications have shed light on the history of the Dutch Atlantic slave trade and of slavery in the Dutch Americas.2 These scholarly contribu- tions, in combination with the social and political activism of the descen- dants of Caribbean slaves, have helped to bring the subject of slavery into the national public debate. The ongoing discussions about an official apology for the Dutch role in slavery, the erection of monuments to commemorate that history, and the inclusion of some of these topics in the first national history canon are all testimony to this increased attention for a troubled past.3 To some this recent focus on the negative aspects of Dutch colonial history has already gone too far, as they summon the country’s glorious past to instill a 1. Technology and Empire: Comparing the Dutch and British Maritime Technologies during the Napoleonic Era (1792–1815) By Ivor Mollema December, 2015 Director of Thesis: Dr. Lynn Harris Major Department: History The two ships, Bato (1806) and Brunswick (1805) wrecked in Simons Bay, South Africa, provide an opportunity to compare British and Dutch maritime technologies during the Napoleonic Era (1792–1815). The former was a Dutch 74-gun ship of the line and the latter a British East Indiaman. Their remains reveal pertinent information about the maritime technologies available to each European power. Industrial capacity and advanced metal working played a significant role in ship construction initiatives of that period, while the dwindling timber supplies forced invention of new technologies. Imperial efforts during the Napoleonic Era relied on naval power. Maritime technologies dictated imperial strategy as ships were deployed to expand or maintain colonial empires. Naval theorists place the strategy into a wider spectrum and the analysis of the material culture complements further understanding of sea power. The study also recommends management options to preserve the archaeological sites for future study and to showcase for heritage tourism. HUDSON Under the DireCtion of Dr. Mohammed Hassen Ali and Dr. Jared Poley ABSTRACT Apart from a sense of racial superiority, which was certainly not unique to white Cape colonists, what is clear is that at the turn of the nineteenth century, Afrikaners were a disparate group. Economically, geographically, educationally, and religiously they were by no means united. Hierarchies existed throughout all cross sections of society. There was little political consciousness and no sense of a nation. Yet by the end of the nineteenth century they had developed a distinct sense of nationalism, indeed of a volk [people; ethnicity] ordained by God. The objective of this thesis is to identify and analyze three key historical events, the emotional sentiments evoked by these nationalistic milestones, and the evolution of a unified Afrikaner identity that would ultimately be used to justify the abhorrent system of apartheid. -

Lindsay is best known for her poem, “Auld Robin Gray.” There is far more to Sir Walter Scott’s relationship with Lady Anne Lindsay than first meets the eye. -

Une des actions humaines les plus fondamentales dans l'existence de l'homme est de dire, interpréter, et raconter de nouveau l'interprétation dans les mots, volontairement, sous forme d'histoires. C'est un éternel, se développer en spirales et un processus socialement construit. Le « récit est crucial dans la vie humaine d'arrangement pour tous que nous soyons, et tous ce que nous faisons, et tout ce que nous pensons et la sensation est basé sur des histoires ; toutes les deux nos histoires personnelles et histoires de notre communauté significative » (1995:215 de Webb-Mitchell). Slabbert (1999 : 49-51) déclarer qu'une identité officielle d'Afrikaner a existé jusqu'à 1990, qui était principalement dû à un récit principal a construit autour de l'adhésion d'église, de l'engagement à la puissance politique et de l'adhésion au parti, comme l'attachement aux organismes culturels tels que le lien de Broeder. En résumé on peut affirmer que l'Afrikaner a perdu son récit principal en vue de l'identité d'Afrikaner, et qu'un certain nombre d'approches à l'identité d'Afrikaner sont suivies chez l'Afrikaner se range. “Cape of Execution”: The gallows at the Cape of Good Hope as represented in the colonial art of Johannes Rach and Lady Anne Barnard Russel Viljoen University of South Africa Email: [email protected] During the eighteenth century, the Cape Colony developed into a violent society in every sense of the word. The type of crimes committed by perpetrators, the sentences imposed by the colonial authorities and the Court of Justice were equally violent. The depiction of the gallows by colonial artists has provided scholars with new insights on South Africa’s past, especially with regard to the increase in violence and the punishment faced by the condemned. Lady Anne Barnard’s Cape diaries “Thinking your journal unimportant”: A feminist literary analysis of selected excerpts from Lady Anne Barnard’s Cape diaries Jessica Murray University of South Africa Department of English Studies [email protected] Abstract This article offers a feminist literary analysis of selected excerpts from the diaries that Lady Anne Barnard wrote during her stay at the Cape Colony from 1797 until 1802. Lady Anne was, by all accounts, an extremely productive writer and correspondent who left behind a wealth of material at the time of her death on 6 May 1825. The article argues that diaries can provide valuable insights about gendered constructions at different historical moments and about how individual women navigated such gendered structures in their daily lives. The textual specificities of diaries require that researchers adjust our reading strategies to meet the demands of these texts. Lady Anne emerges as a complex subject who is both subversive and constrained in her negotiations with gendered constructions of “proper” female roles and behaviour. Even as she challenges these constructions, she also appears to have internalized them, at least partly. Introduction Once more, once more, thou creature of omissions, always intending right, always forgetting, thinking your journal unimportant and what you have to say not worth paper pen and ink, yet always regretting afterwards that you did so…(Barnard, 1799).1 The above epigraph is taken from the diaries that Lady Anne Barnard (see image 1) wrote during her stay at the Cape Colony from 1797 until 1802. -
