INTRODUCTION As one of the most controversial American literary figures, Edgar Allan Poe has always attracted considerable attention from both critics and readers alike. Due to his allegedly eccentric personality and the dubious circumstances surrounding his death, the public perception of the writer has often been somewhat mythologized. When it comes to his works, Poe has been both critically acclaimed and disparaged, both acknowledged and disputed, but rarely ignored. As he left behind a significantly influential literary legacy, his place among the most important writers in American literature is today undeniable. Being both a journalist and a fiction writer, Poe produced numerous texts ranging from tales and poems to critical essays, reviews and newspaper articles. -

Thomson A Thesis in the Field of English for the Degree of Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies Harvard University May 2018 Copyright 2018 Jennifer J. Thomson Abstract This investigation examines the origins and development of Edgar Allan Poe’s aesthetic theory throughout his body of work. It employs a tripartite approach commencing with the consideration of relevant biographical context, then proceeds with a detailed analysis of a selection of Poe’s writing on composition and craft: “Letter to B—,” “Hawthorne’s Twice-Told Tales,” “The Philosophy of Composition,” “The Poetic Principle,” and “The Philosophy of Furniture.” Finally, it applies this information to the analysis of selected works of Poe’s short fiction: “The Assignation,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Oval Portrait,” “The Domain of Arnheim,” and “Landor’s Cottage.” The examination concludes that Poe’s philosophy of art and his metaphysics are linked; therefore, his aesthetic system bears more analytical weight in the study of his fiction than was previously allowed. -

But though Poe seems capable of offering readers only a very specific form of literary experience -- dark, brooding, atmospheric -- what’s striking about his work when taken as a whole is its variety. Poe was a writer of short stories, a poet, a novelist, an essayist, and an editor. Accepted: 2 December 2019 BODY, SPACE, AND SENSATIONS IN EDGAR AL- LAN POE’S “A PREDICAMENT” Abstract This paper aims to examine the sensationalism ofBlackwood’s Magazine as evident in Poe’s tale “A Predicament” and how Poe disengages from the tradition of Black- wood’s. On the one hand, Poe conflates Psyche Zenobia’s adventure into a Gothic Cathedral with the Blackwood’s sensationalistic experience, which treats vehement sensations as the prime condition for stimulating the mind’s engagement with a spiritual vision of a world beyond the material world. On the other, Poe’s tale disen- gages itself from the tradition of Blackwood’s Magazine: Zenobia loses her sensations altogether in the quest for final knowledge and there is no return to her real life. This paper will further look at the mutilated/deformed body in Poe’s “A Predicament” as a body in pain, or without pain, through which the mind engages its imagination. It will also discuss how Poe, through Zenobia’s gaze and speculation upon a sublime cathedral, installs an aesthetic appreciation that distances an imaginary space from reality and facilitates self-mesmerism through which Zenobia is grounded in the earthly world, both physically and spiritually. -

DOI: 10.17561/grove.v23.a11 “IF DOUBT IT YE CANNOT, THEN PLAY UNTO ITS RIDDLE THE OEDIPUS”: PHILLHELENIC PATTERNS IN EDGAR ALLAN POE'S TALES1 Dimitrios Tsokanos Universidad de Almería Abstract Edgar Allan Poe’s bicentenary revived the interest of renowned literary critics in his works and several new studies that analyse the author’s impact outside the United States have been undertaken. Quite astonishingly, even in Lois Vines’ Poe Abroad (1999), a meticulous investigation on Poe’s presence in Asia and Europe, Greece is nowhere to be mentioned. Apart from scarce mention of a Hellenic influence in his storytelling, the presence of Hellenic motifs in Poe’s works has not been extensively explored so far. This paper aims to delve into this particular topic through Poe’s “Eleonora” and “Ligeia” in an attempt to demonstrate philhellenic patterns as well as to indicate the need for future systematic studies. Resumen El bicenterario del nacimiento de Edgar Allan Poe avivó el interés de numerosos investigadores y académicos y gran número de investigaciones se basaron en la obra de Poe y su impacto fuera de los Estados Unidos. Sorprendentemente, incluso en la edición de Lois Vine Poe Abroad (1999), una meticulosa investigación sobre la presencia de Poe en Asia y en Europa, Grecia no se encuentra entre los países mencionados. Poe's va~ue is seen to lie in his attempt to find viable poetic symbols for hitherto unexplored are as of experience. A selective survey of Poe's tales and poems reveals him as the first poet togive expression to the Unconscious. The "voyage," as exemp~ified in .!!l!. Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, is analyzed as one of the central motifs of Poe's cohesive vision. finally, Poels "horror tale" is shown to be an early exercise of the Psychology of fear, as it was eventually fu~ly exploited by Dostoievski, Kafka, and others.
