  • Cetaceans of Orkney
    CETACEANS OF ORKNEY As with the neighbouring Shetland Islands, the cetacean fauna (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) of Orkney is one of the richest in the UK. Favoured localities for cetacean sightings are off headlands and between sounds of islands in inshore areas, and over fishing banks in offshore regions. Although the majority of sightings records for several species occur on the west coast, this may relate to the easier opportunities to see animals from cliff-tops there. Much of the low-lying sand dune areas occur on the east side of Orkney making it more difficult to spot cetaceans from here. Since 1980, seventeen species of cetacean have been recorded along the coast or in nearshore waters (within 60 km of the coast). Of these, seven species (25% of the UK cetacean fauna) are present throughout the year or recorded annually as seasonal visitors. Of recent unusual cetacean sightings, single humpback whales have been seen on a number of occasions in summer. Sperm whales, although not annual, have been recorded several times in Orkney waters, mainly during winter months between October and March. Recently, six sperm whales remained in Scapa Flow between 22nd February and 25th March 1993, and eleven sperm whales stranded at Backaskaill Bay, Sanday on 7th December 1994, where they died the subsequent morning. CETACEAN SPECIES REGULARLY SIGHTED IN THE REGION Minke whale Balaenoptera acutorostrata The minke whale is the most frequently observed baleen whale species in the region. Most observations have been made along the west and south coasts of Orkney and in the Pentland Firth, but this may reflect the better cliff vantage points available there.

    Proc Soc Antiq Scot 145 (2015), 41–89 THE KNOWE OF ROWIEGAR, ROUSAY, ORKNEY | 41 The Knowe of Rowiegar, Rousay, Orkney: description and dating of the human remains and context relative to neighbouring cairns Margaret Hutchison,* Neil Curtis* and Ray Kidd* ABSTRACT The Neolithic chambered cairn at Knowe of Rowiegar, Rousay, Orkney, was excavated in 1937 as part of a campaign that also saw excavations at sites such as Midhowe and the Knowe of Lairo. Not fully published at the time, and with only partial studies since, the human bone assemblage has now been largely re-united and investigated. This included an osteological study and AMS dating of selected bones from this site and other Rousay cairns in the care of University of Aberdeen Museums, as well as the use of archival sources to attempt a reconstruction of the site. It is suggested that the human remains were finally deposited as disarticulated bones and that the site was severely damaged at the time the adjacent Iron Age souterrain was constructed. The estimation of the minimum number of individuals represented in the assemblage showed a significant preponderance of crania and mandibles, suggesting the presence of at least 28 heads, along with much smaller numbers of other bones, while age and sex determinations showed a preponderance of adult males. Seven skulls showed evidence of violent trauma, while evidence from both bones and teeth indicates that there were high levels of childhood dietary deficiency. Although detailed analysis of the dates was hampered by the ‘Neolithic plateau’, a Bayesian analysis of the radiocarbon determinations suggests the use of the site during the period 3400 to 2900 cal BC.

  • Place Names in Orkney from 16Th- and 17Th-Century Maps
    Place names in Orkney from 16th- and 17th-century maps Lachlan of Cromarty Ian McIntosh [email protected] For this project, I recorded the Orkney Island placenames found on maps published in the second half of the sixteenth century and the rst half of the seventeenth century. I compared those spellings to modern Ordinance Survey maps. Nearly all placenames in Orkney are of Scandinavian origin, and very few are of Gaelic origin. Norse migration from the North completely superseded the previous, Pictish inhabitants of the islands. Especially characteristic are suxes of Old Norse origin; -ay (meaning `island'), -holm (meaning `round topped or grassy islet') and -skerry (meaning `rocky islet'). The maps I have organized the period maps at my disposal into two categories: those based upon early sixteenth century data, and those based upon the survey of Timothy Pont in the 1580s and 1590s. Maps in the former category were published in the late 16th C and very early 17th C For simplicity sake, I refer to these maps as 16th-C Maps. Maps of the latter category were all published in the 17th C, after Pont's death. I refer to these maps as 17th-C Maps. 16th C maps In the 16th-C Maps category are the maps of Abraham Ortelius, Gerhard Mercator, and John Speed. These maps are based upon documentation completed in the early sixteenth century, which is now lost. In his article, A History of Orkney Maps, John Chesters theorizes that Ortelius' map, circa 1575, was based upon an early draft of Gerhard Mercator's.
