Late Norse High-Status Sites Around the Bay of Skaill, Sandwick, Orkney
Late Norse high-status sites around the Bay of Skaill, Sandwick, Orkney James M. Irvine THE immediate hinterland of the Bay of Skaill in Orkney’s west Mainland is best known for the Neolithic village of Skara Brae, but it has a wealth of other early settlement and funerary sites, including at least two Iron Age brochs, while its Norse burial sites and ubiquitous place-names testify to its occupation during this period as well. Alas, the area was not mentioned in ‘Orkneyinga Saga’, and until recently no Norse settlement sites had been found, nor had much local history been published. However, there is now a growing corpus of multi-disciplinary research, notably two theses by Sarah Jane Gibbon née Grieve (1999, 2006), my own work on the Breckness estate (Irvine 2009a), and the major, on-going Birsay-Skaill Landscape Archaeology Project directed by David Griffiths of Oxford University (2005, 2006, 2011), coupled with the stimulus of the Research Agenda of The Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site (Historic Scotland 2008). This prompts consideration of when and why four high-status sites in this area, shown in Figure 1 – St. Peter’s Kirk, the Castle of Snusgar, Stove, and Skaill House – may have developed and interacted during the late Norse period.1 The objective of this paper is not to pre-empt the important archaeological findings of Griffiths and his colleagues, but to introduce some hypotheses that will hopefully help stimulate further historical research and discussion on this important area and period. St. Peter’s Kirk This building has been restored by the Scottish Redundant Churches Trust and its modern history recorded (Irvine 2003), but little is known of the early history of the site, and no archaeological work has been undertaken. -

"West about" Kirkwall to Stromness and return These notes are only for guidance about tide times. We accept no responsibility for navigation, avoidance of hazards, weather, or your seamanship. It is 36 nm from Kirkwall to Stromness which looks like a 7+ hour passage at 5 knots but it can easily be done in under 5 hours if the tide is used well. Conversely it can take all day if you get the tides wrong! Skippers should also consider the direction of wind as a fresh westerly or north westerly in conjunction with spring tides can make for a bumpy ride. That being said, if you plan your passage so as to avoid wind against tide it should be a straightforward, enjoyable, fast trip. There are 2 tide “gates” to bear in mind; the first is the exit of Eynhallow Sound at the isle of Eynhallow itself, which is around 12 nm north west from Kirkwall. A severe tide race (known in Orkney as a “rost”, and pronounced “roost”) can be generated during the ebb. The second is the entrance to Hoy Sound, known as Hoy Mouth which once again can generate a severe race on the ebb tide. Both of these tide races usually only appear during ebb tides. The tide streams in Orkney generally turn in line with Dover tide times. A latest departure from Kirkwall at 3 hours after HW Dover should carry you swiftly on the ebb to Eynhallow with an hour or so of ebb still remaining but with the mid tide rost subsiding sufficient to give fair tide westwards after Eynhallow to the Brough of Birsay headland before the eastgoing flood begins. -

Proc Soc Antiq Scot 145 (2015), 41–89 THE KNOWE OF ROWIEGAR, ROUSAY, ORKNEY | 41 The Knowe of Rowiegar, Rousay, Orkney: description and dating of the human remains and context relative to neighbouring cairns Margaret Hutchison,* Neil Curtis* and Ray Kidd* ABSTRACT The Neolithic chambered cairn at Knowe of Rowiegar, Rousay, Orkney, was excavated in 1937 as part of a campaign that also saw excavations at sites such as Midhowe and the Knowe of Lairo. Not fully published at the time, and with only partial studies since, the human bone assemblage has now been largely re-united and investigated. This included an osteological study and AMS dating of selected bones from this site and other Rousay cairns in the care of University of Aberdeen Museums, as well as the use of archival sources to attempt a reconstruction of the site. It is suggested that the human remains were finally deposited as disarticulated bones and that the site was severely damaged at the time the adjacent Iron Age souterrain was constructed. The estimation of the minimum number of individuals represented in the assemblage showed a significant preponderance of crania and mandibles, suggesting the presence of at least 28 heads, along with much smaller numbers of other bones, while age and sex determinations showed a preponderance of adult males. Seven skulls showed evidence of violent trauma, while evidence from both bones and teeth indicates that there were high levels of childhood dietary deficiency. Although detailed analysis of the dates was hampered by the ‘Neolithic plateau’, a Bayesian analysis of the radiocarbon determinations suggests the use of the site during the period 3400 to 2900 cal BC.
