1 Christine Moll-Murata The Rise, Organization, and Institutional Framework of Factor Markets, 23-25 June 2005 http://www.iisg.nl/hpw/factormarkets.php GEHN Workshop Utrecht, June 2005 The Rise, Organization, and Institutional Framework of Factor Markets Christine Moll-Murata Working for the State: The Chinese Labour Market for Manufacture and Construction, 1000-1900 Please do not cite without permission from the author [email protected] This is a report on work in progress from a project that focuses on state administration and self organization of the crafts in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).1 In Chinese craft historiography, the transition from labour obligations for artisan households to a system of hired labour in the official sector between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries is generally considered as the most important institutional and legal change. While there can be no doubt about the impact of this reform, we have sought to find out about earlier institutional arrangements as well, and to explore the intra-dynastic transformation processes. Present-day Chinese historiography most often treats craft production in the service of the state, the “official crafts” as quite distinct from that in the private sector (“civil crafts”). Such an approach implies that the effect of dynastic economic policies was to create “a closed and self-sufficient part of the feudal economy, which was ultimately incompatible with private handicraft industry”. 2 We will explore how far this characterization is accurate for the periods covering the dynasties Song (960–1276), Yuan (1279–1368), Ming (1368–1644), and Qing (1644–1911). It is useful to take this long perspective for a later global comparison of the role of the state in pre-industrial economies.

WHC Nomination Documentation File Name: 1004.pdf UNESCO Region: ASIA AND THE PACIFIC __________________________________________________________________________________________________ SITE NAME: Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties DA TE OF INSCRIPTION: 2nd December 2000 STATE PARTY: CHINA CRITERIA: C (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (vi) DECISION OF THE WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE: Criterion (i):The harmonious integration of remarkable architectural groups in a natural environment chosen to meet the criteria of geomancy (Fengshui) makes the Ming and Qing Imperial Tombs masterpieces of human creative genius. Criteria (ii), (iii) and (iv):The imperial mausolea are outstanding testimony to a cultural and architectural tradition that for over five hundred years dominated this part of the world; by reason of their integration into the natural environment, they make up a unique ensemble of cultural landscapes. Criterion (vi):The Ming and Qing Tombs are dazzling illustrations of the beliefs, world view, and geomantic theories of Fengshui prevalent in feudal China. They have served as burial edifices for illustrious personages and as the theatre for major events that have marked the history of China. The Committee took note, with appreciation, of the State Party's intention to nominate the Mingshaoling Mausoleum at Nanjing (Jiangsu Province) and the Changping complex in the future as an extention to the Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing dynasties. BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS The Ming and Qing imperial tombs are natural sites modified by human influence, carefully chosen according to the principles of geomancy (Fengshui) to house numerous buildings of traditional architectural design and decoration. They illustrate the continuity over five centuries of a world view and concept of power specific to feudal China.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Emperor’s Coffer: The Qing Imperial Fiscal Separation Between Privy Purse and State Treasury (1644-1912) A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History by Jia Feng 2017 © Copyright by Jia Feng 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Emperor’s Coffer: The Qing Imperial Fiscal Separation Between Privy Purse and State Treasury (1644-1912) by Jia Feng Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Robert P. Brenner, Co-Chair Professor James Tong, Co-Chair This dissertation examines the imperial fiscal arrangement during the Qing dynasty that separated the privy or crown’s purse from the state treasury. In my dissertation, I argue that while the distinction between public and private finance has long been identified in European studies as an important sign of the rise of modernity, similar fiscal arrangements in China arose from the crown’s endeavor over several decades to consolidate authority first over the nobility and then over the Chinese state. I see dynamics of this separation as deeply rooted in China’s longstanding patrimonial bureaucratic rule. The continued functioning of the imperial state system into the Qing, a dynasty founded by non-Han rulers, thus suggests the remarkable resiliency of Chinese political traditions despite dramatic institutional changes brought by alien conquest. This dissertation is composed of an introduction, six chapters, and a conclusion. The ii introduction sets out the reasons why the public/private divide structure does not necessarily mean the rise of modernity and demonstrates how the separation was both indicative of and shaped by China’s longstanding patrimonial bureaucratic rule.
