  • The Christian Remains of the Seven Churches of the Apocalypse
1974, 3) THE BIBLICAL ARCHAEOLOGIST 69 The Christian Remains of the Seven Churches of the Apocalypse OTTO F. A. MEINARDU S Athens, Greece Some months ago, I revisited the island of Patmos and the sites of the seven churches to which letters are addressed in the second and third chap- ters of the book of Revelation. What follows is a report on such Christian remains as have survived and an indication of the various traditions which have grown up at the eight locations, where, as at so many other places in the Orthodox and Latin world, piety has sought tangible localization. I set out from Piraeus and sailed to the island of Patmos, off the Turkish coast, which had gained its significance because of the enforced exile of God's servant John (Rev. 1:1, 9) and from the acceptance of the Revelation in the NT canon. From the tiny port of Skala, financial and tourist center of Patmos, the road ascends to the 11th century Greek Orthodox monastery of St. John the Theologian. Half way to this mighty fortress monastery, I stopped at the Monastery of the Apocalypse, which enshrines the "Grotto of the Revelation." Throughout the centuries pilgrims have come to this site to receive blessings. When Pitton de Tournefort visited Patmos in 1702, the grotto was a poor hermitage administered by the bishop of Samos. The abbot presented de Tournefort with pieces of rock from the grotto, assuring him that they could expel evil spirits and cure diseases. Nowadays, hundreds of western tourists visit the grotto daily, especially during the summer, and are shown those traditional features which are related in one way or another with the vision of John.

  • Stable Lead Isotope Studies of Black Sea Anatolian Ore Sources and Related Bronze Age and Phrygian Artefacts from Nearby Archaeological Sites
Archaeometry 43, 1 (2001) 77±115. Printed in Great Britain STABLE LEAD ISOTOPE STUDIES OF BLACK SEA ANATOLIAN ORE SOURCES AND RELATED BRONZE AGE AND PHRYGIAN ARTEFACTS FROM NEARBY ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES. APPENDIX: NEW CENTRAL TAURUS ORE DATA E. V. SAYRE, E. C. JOEL, M. J. BLACKMAN, Smithsonian Center for Materials Research and Education, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC 20560, USA K. A. YENER Oriental Institute, University of Chicago, 1155 East 58th Street, Chicago, IL 60637, USA and H. OÈ ZBAL Faculty of Arts and Sciences, BogÆazicËi University, Istanbul, Turkey The accumulated published database of stable lead isotope analyses of ore and slag specimens taken from Anatolian mining sites that parallel the Black Sea coast has been augmented with 22 additional analyses of such specimens carried out at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Multivariate statistical analysis has been used to divide this composite database into ®ve separate ore source groups. Evidence that most of these ore sources were exploited for the production of metal artefacts during the Bronze Age and Phrygian Period has been obtained by statistically comparing to them the isotope ratios of 184 analysed artefacts from nine archaeological sites situated within a few hundred kilometres of these mining sites. Also, Appendix B contains 36 new isotope analyses of ore specimens from Central Taurus mining sites that are compatible with and augment the four Central Taurus Ore Source Groups de®ned in Yener et al. (1991). KEYWORDS: BLACK SEA, CENTRAL TAURUS, ANATOLIA, METAL, ORES, ARTEFACTS, BRONZE AGE, MULTIVARIATE, STATISTICS, PROBABILITIES INTRODUCTION This is the third in a series of papers in which we have endeavoured to evaluate the present state of the application of stable lead isotope analyses of specimens from metallic ore sources and of ancient artefacts from Near Eastern sites to the inference of the probable origins of such artefacts.

STATE IMPOSED PLACE NAME CHANGE IN TURKEY AND THE RESPONSE OF GIRESUN RESIDENTS by Daniel Fields Submitted to the Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Sabancı University June 2013 STATE IMPOSED PLACE NAME CHANGE IN TURKEY AND THE RESPONSE OF GIRESUN RESIDENTS APPROVED BY: Cemil Koçak ......................................... (Thesis Supervisor) Leyla Neyzi ......................................... Akşin Somel ......................................... DATE OF APPROVAL................................ ii © Daniel Fields 2013 All Rights Reserved iii STATE IMPOSED PLACE NAME CHANGE IN TURKEY AND THE RESPONSE OF GIRESUN RESIDENTS Daniel Fields Turkish Studies M.A. Thesis, 2013 Prof. Dr. Cemil Koçak Keyword: Place Names, Toponymical Change, Giresun, Turkey Abstract: In 1913, the Ottoman state began attempting to systematically impose new place names across the territory under its control. Although the intensity of the efforts varied greatly, place name change would continue through the end of the Ottoman Empire and on into the Republic of Turkey. By 1968, when a volume containing all the changes was published by the Interior Ministry, roughly thirty percent of settlement names in Turkey had been changed. Renaming continued sporadically until the 1990s. This thesis inquires into these attempts at name change in Turkey with a focus on how people responded to the changes in their everyday lives. The value of place names as formulated in human and cultural geography is explored in order to determine why people may have rejected or accepted the state imposed names. Place name change, rather than being approached solely as a nation-building project motivated by Turkification, is also considered as being a technique of governmentality.

  • Additional Lichen Records from Giresun Province, Turkey
MYCOTAXON Volume 109, pp. 137–140 July–September 2009 Additional lichen records from Giresun Province, Turkey Kadir Kınalıoğlu [email protected] Giresun University, Faculty of Science and Arts, Department of Biology Giresun, Turkey Abstract – A total of 299 lichen taxa are presented from 52 sampling stations in the Turkish province of Giresun. Of these 5 species are new to Turkey, viz. Biatora cuprea, Collema dichotomum, Gyalecta foveolaris, Umbilicaria virginis and Verrucaria fusconigrescens, and 110 species are new to Giresun. The complete checklist is available on http://www.mycotaxon.com/resources/weblists.html. Key words – biota, biodiversity, Karagöl Mountains Introduction Despite intense lichenological field activity in Turkey in recent years, many areas remain poorly known with respect to their lichen biota. As to Giresun province, until now 14 research articles on its lichen biota have been published (Aslan et al. 2002, Aslan & Yazıcı 2006, Duman & Yurdakulol 2007, Halıcı & Şenkardeşler 2009, John & Breuss 2004, Kınalıoğlu 2005, 2006, 2008, Kınalıoğlu & Engin 2004, Küçük 1990, Özgen et al. 2003, Steiner 1909, Süleyman et al. 2002, Yazıcı 2006, Yazici & Aptroot 2008). However, these studies still do not give an adequate picture of the lichen biota of Giresun as new fieldwork by the author has shown. This provided many additions to our knowledge of the lichens of Giresun and Turkey, which are presented below. The study area Giresun is located in the eastern part of the Black Sea region of Turkey (Fig. 1), at the boundary of the Euxianian section of the Euro-Siberian Phytogeographical Region. It is situated between 40°07’ 41°08’ N and 37°50’ 39°12’ E at altitudes ranging from sea level to 3331 m.

Sailing aboard the intrepid Argo from the Aegean Sea to the Black Sea, this daring band overcame unmitigated perils and performed remarkable feats, tantalizing imaginations for centuries with the romantic wonder of their voyage, and the tragic relationship between Jason and Medea. Next summer, relive this thrilling adventure aboard the privately chartered, 50-guest Artemis as we sail the same seas as the Argonauts, in the pursuit of their ultimate goal—the Golden Fleece. The epic of Jason and the Argonauts is a tale of discovery, exploration, and adventure. Sailing the same sea lanes as the ancient mariners, our voyage through the Black and Aegean Seas is also a journey of exploration and discovery to ports and sites that remain beyond the circuit of mega cruise ships and mass tourism. While some of the natural wonders of Jason’s era have vanished, many have gently fused with modern culture. Using Apollonius’ epic Argonautica as our guide, we begin in Turkey’s Trabzon, an ancient city along the silk route that has fueled the western imagination for centuries. In the Republic of Georgia, we’ll call at Batumi and Poti, just as the Argonauts did over 3,000 years ago.
