www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Species composition and invasion risks of alien ornamental freshwater fshes from pet stores in Klang Valley, Malaysia Abdulwakil Olawale Saba1,2, Ahmad Ismail1, Syaizwan Zahmir Zulkifi1, Muhammad Rasul Abdullah Halim3, Noor Azrizal Abdul Wahid4 & Mohammad Noor Azmai Amal1* The ornamental fsh trade has been considered as one of the most important routes of invasive alien fsh introduction into native freshwater ecosystems. Therefore, the species composition and invasion risks of fsh species from 60 freshwater fsh pet stores in Klang Valley, Malaysia were studied. A checklist of taxa belonging to 18 orders, 53 families, and 251 species of alien fshes was documented. Fish Invasiveness Screening Test (FIST) showed that seven (30.43%), eight (34.78%) and eight (34.78%) species were considered to be high, medium and low invasion risks, respectively. After the calibration of the Fish Invasiveness Screening Kit (FISK) v2 using the Receiver Operating Characteristics, a threshold value of 17 for distinguishing between invasive and non-invasive fshes was identifed. As a result, nine species (39.13%) were of high invasion risk. In this study, we found that non-native fshes dominated (85.66%) the freshwater ornamental trade in Klang Valley, while FISK is a more robust tool in assessing the risk of invasion, and for the most part, its outcome was commensurate with FIST. This study, for the frst time, revealed the number of high-risk ornamental fsh species that give an awareness of possible future invasion if unmonitored in Klang Valley, Malaysia. As a global hobby, fshkeeping is cherished by both young and old people. -

Context: The biotechnology provisions of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) take a preventative approach to environmental protection by requiring all new living organism products of biotechnology, including genetically engineered fish, to be notified and assessed prior to their import into Canada or manufacture in Canada, to determine whether they are “toxic” or capable of becoming “toxic”. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and Health Canada (HC) are mandated to conduct all risk assessments under CEPA. On July 5, 2017 a notification under the NSNR(O) was submitted by GloFish LLC to ECCC for the GloFish® Electric Green® Tetra (CGT2016), a genetically engineered white variant of the Black Tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi). Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), ECCC and HC, DFO conducts an environmental risk assessment as advice, provides this advice to ECCC, and collaborates with HC to conduct an indirect human health risk assessment for any fish products of biotechnology notified under CEPA and the New Substances Notification Regulations (Organisms) [NSNR(O)]. -

The correlation coefficient exhibited allometric (+,-) and isometric patterns in different types of fish species assessed in the present study. The fish were measured and calculated in correlation coefficient (r2). This present study envisages the new arena of formulation of mathematical modelling using fish model. AQUACULTURE CDE PURPOSE The purpose of the Aquaculture Career Development Event is to stimulate student interest in the aquaculture industry, encourage aquaculture instruction in the agricultural education curriculum, and to provide recognition for those who have demonstrated skills and competencies in the area of aquaculture management. Florida has a unique and diverse aquaculture industry which includes the culture of tropical ornamental fish, aquatic plants, clams, shrimp, alligators, tilapia, catfish, live rock, and other assorted aquatic animals. ELIGIBILITY The participant must be an active member of a chartered Florida FFA Chapter and enrolled in grades 9, 10, 11, or 12. Each chapter may enter one team. EVENT PROCEDURES The event will be a team event consisting of four students. Only the top three scores will be calculated for the team total. A team may compete with less than four members. FFA members are to wear OUTDOOR FFA Official Dress, and will be scored accordingly. Under no circumstance will any participants be allowed to handle any of the items in the identification portion of the practicum’s. Any infraction of this rule will be sufficient to eliminate a team from the event. TEAM ACTIVITY SCENARIO Students will be provided a scenario no less that two weeks in advance related to the Aquaculture Industry. MBP PHASE 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY NISC Executive Summary Prepared by the National Invasive Species Council On March 7th, 2007 the U.S. Department of Navy (DoN) issued a Notice of Intent to prepare an “Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)/Overseas Environmental Impact Statement (OEIS)” for the “Relocation of U.S. Marine Corps Forces to Guam, Enhancement of Infrastructure and Logistic Capabilities, Improvement of Pier/Waterfront Infrastructure for Transient U.S. Navy Nuclear Aircraft Carrier (CVN) at Naval Base Guam, and Placement of a U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Task Force in Guam”. This relocation effort has become known as the “build-up”. In considering some of the environmental consequences of such an undertaking, it quickly became apparent that one of the primary regional concerns of such a move was the potential for unintentional movement of invasive species to new locations in the region. Guam has already suffered the eradication of many of its native species due to the introduction of brown treesnakes and many other invasive plants, animals and pathogens cause tremendous damage to its economy and marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. DoN, in consultation and concurrence with relevant federal and territorial regulatory entities, determined that there was a need to develop a biosecurity plan to address these concerns. -

Sohn and Kim Applied Microscopy (2021) 51:3 Applied Microscopy https://doi.org/10.1186/s42649-021-00052-z RESEARCH Open Access Ultrastructure of the fertilized egg envelope from Melanotaenia praecox, Melanotaeniidae, Teleostei Joon Hyung Sohn1 and Dong Heui Kim2* Abstract We examined the morphology of fertilized egg and ultrastructures of fertilized egg envelopes of dwarf rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox) belong to Melanotaeniidae using light and electron microscopes. The fertilized eggs were spherical with adhesive filament, transparent, demersal, and had a narrow perivitelline space and small oil droplets. The size of fertilized egg was 1.02 ± 0.18 mm (n = 30), and there were two kinds of adhesive filament on the fertilized eggs. The long and thick (diameter 12.22 ± 0.52 μm, n = 20) adhesive filaments were only at the area of animal pole, and short and thin (diameter 1.99 ± 0.23 μm, n = 20) adhesive filaments were around the long filaments. A micropyle was conical shaped with adhesive filament and located near the animal pole of egg. The outer surface of fertilized egg was rough side. Also, the total thickness of the fertilized egg envelope was about 7.46 ± 0.41 μm(n = 20), the fertilized egg envelope consisted of two layers, an inner lamellae layer and an outer layer with high electron-density. And the inner layer was 8 layers. Collectively, these morphological characteristics and adhesive property of fertilized egg with adhesive filaments, and ultrastructures of micropyle, outer surface, and section of fertilized egg envelope are showed species specificity.
