Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

I stopped walking, letting the sounds of crunching leaves fade. “If you don’t want to be here, you can leave whenever you want to.” I replied. Simon had always dragged me out of trouble, or stuck by me no matter what crazy idea I had, but I wondered - not for the first time - if there was a limit to how many times he would try to talk some sense into me while sticking by my side before he gave up trying altogether. -

The relief of a gorgon stared back from behind the glass, tongue out, teeth bared, the circular edges of the coin stretched so much like Play-Doh she imagined the Greeks entrusting its minting to a child. She stood back up and was startled by a tall red-haired young man hovering over her. She knew his face from the opposite end of a scratched-up wooden table on the ground floor of Logan Hall. He apologized, but lingered as if they were already in the midst of a conversation. He explained that drachmae were made of electrum, an alloy of silver and gold, but only made with a wee bit of gold once circulated under the Roman Empire. -

Templeton Appeared Stoic for Lee They say that I let him do it, that I knew what he was doing to those kids when he took them down into the basement, but all those people who think these things have never raised so beautiful a boy. When he was six or seven he would bring dead birds to me and ask me to make them fly again. He kissed my cheeks before he went to bed or out to play. Even when he grew older he never forgot or felt embarrassed about showing me his love. Now, I ask you how in the hell could a boy who cared for dead birds and never forgot to kiss his father hurt those kids? How can you take the words of fourteen year old boys against the word of a grown man? I ask you that. I ask you the same thing I asked the police on the night they took him away; I ask you the same thing I asked the DA and the judge and everybody in that goddamn courtroom on that day last April. And I say to you the same things I said to them. -

Foreword So much of the creative writing world is paradoxical – the notion that you can’t get published without being published; the dream of making a living doing what you love while possibly be- traying the idea that art exists beyond consumption; the dance we all do, putting on brave faces at parties and in query letters while relying on our insecurities and vulnerabilities to render im- possibly vivid worlds. But I think these are all manifestations of what writing truly is. When you write or read, you are traversing a precipice of perspective. You are venturing out toward the horizon of what it is you think you know and witnessing where that line intersects with, contra- dicts, and challenges others of its kind. Some of us, I am sorry to say, cannot appreciate those other horizons or their effects on us. But you are here, reading this journal, and because of that I dare to believe that you can see the vistas before you. Those vistas are the point of this journal. The Angel City Review exists because we want to see seemingly impossible ideas that threaten our overly comfortable worldviews, because we want to move beyond conceptual points of no return, and because we want to share these moments with you. The work that our team has put in, spending many late nights debating the strengths of amazing poetry and prose, is not for profit; this is, after all, a free journal. -

Acknowledgements Funding for trapper education student manual and related materials was provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Inter- national Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (IAFWA) through a Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Multi-state Grant. The copyright is held by the IAFWA. Materials for print developed under the grant are free for use by state, provincial, and territorial fi sh and wildlife agencies. Images used in the manual come from many sources including public domain collections, state and federal agencies, and private companies. Most of the images require separate licensing for use in other types of publications. Hundreds of individuals have contributed to the development of the IAFWA Trapper Education Program. Most state and provincial wild- life agencies provided copies of their trapper education materials for review. Many agency personnel provided comments on materials, answered questions, ran pilot courses, or helped in other ways. Many trappers, including members of the National Trappers Association and the Fur Takers of America also contributed. Michigan Trapper Education Manual: A Guide for Trappers in Michigan Funding provided by: Michigan Chapter Acknowledgments In Memoriam The first edition of the Michigan Trapper Education manual is dedicated to the memory of Robert Dougherty. He passed away before the Trapper Education program kick-off occurred. Bob was extremely dedicated to trapping and trapper education and he was very excited to see this trapper education program become a reality. He will be missed by his friends, family, and the trapping community. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trapper Education program was developed through the dedication and effort of many people, including Michigan trappers and federal and state agency personnel.
