Console Games in the Age of Convergence
Console Games in the Age of Convergence Mark Finn Swinburne University of Technology John Street, Melbourne, Victoria, 3122 Australia +61 3 9214 5254 mfi [email protected] Abstract In this paper, I discuss the development of the games console as a converged form, focusing on the industrial and technical dimensions of convergence. Starting with the decline of hybrid devices like the Commodore 64, the paper traces the way in which notions of convergence and divergence have infl uenced the console gaming market. Special attention is given to the convergence strategies employed by key players such as Sega, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, and the success or failure of these strategies is evaluated. Keywords Convergence, Games histories, Nintendo, Sega, Sony, Microsoft INTRODUCTION Although largely ignored by the academic community for most of their existence, recent years have seen video games attain at least some degree of legitimacy as an object of scholarly inquiry. Much of this work has focused on what could be called the textual dimension of the game form, with works such as Finn [17], Ryan [42], and Juul [23] investigating aspects such as narrative and character construction in game texts. Another large body of work focuses on the cultural dimension of games, with issues such as gender representation and the always-controversial theme of violence being of central importance here. Examples of this approach include Jenkins [22], Cassell and Jenkins [10] and Schleiner [43]. 45 Proceedings of Computer Games and Digital Cultures Conference, ed. Frans Mäyrä. Tampere: Tampere University Press, 2002. Copyright: authors and Tampere University Press. Little attention, however, has been given to the industrial dimension of the games phenomenon. -

Ludological Dynamics in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly
Catch and Release: Ludological Dynamics in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly William Huber University of California San Diego, CA Abstract Videogames are software-based artifacts, and their nature as such affords researchers the opportunity to study a range of stable semiotic interface elements. Players engaged with a game become increasingly skilled at decoding these games over a range of semiotic registers to navigate through the game, interpret elements in the visual field, and respond effectively to game challenges. Using techniques drawn from scientific analysis of visual images and video data, the author has examined the videogame Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly. After identifying modes of play corresponding to clusters of operations and representations in recordings of game navigation, the author identifies patterns of repetition and suspense which support the aesthetics experience appropriate for a horror game; however, this effect does not operate in isolation. The article also criticizes approaches toward the analysis of videogames which rely on stark distinctions between operational and representational modes of reception, arguing instead for a simultaneous decoding of elements in the visual field. As signifiers are decoded within a given register, whether operational or diegetic, those signifying elements remain latently available for decoding in others. These latent, deferred decodings – evoking the resemblances and eerie identities described in the traditional discourse on the uncanny – are considered another element in the production of uncanny experience in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly. Author Keywords Ludology; culture; emotion; meaning. One persistent problem in the study of videogames has been the difficulty in resolving them both as playable, dynamic software-based media and as screen-based systems of representation, especially as narratives. -

Proposal for an Undergraduate Major in Esports and Game Studies B.S
4/16/2019 Proposal for an Undergraduate Major in Esports and Game Studies B.S. Arts and Sciences PRELMINARY PROPOSAL FOR A BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN Esports and Game Studies I. Proposed Major This new major will be a Bachelor of Science degree through the College of Arts and Sciences in Esports and Game Studies (EGS). Initially, the major will focus on three tracks: 1.) Esports and Game Creation, 2.) Esports Management, and 3.) Application of Games in Medicine and Health. Additional concentrations and certificate programs may be proposed once the major becomes well established. II. Rationale A. Describe the rationale/purpose of the major. This new four-year Arts & Sciences major is a true collaboration between five colleges at The Ohio State University: 1) The College of Arts & Sciences, 2) The Fisher College of Business, 3) The College of Education and Human Ecology, 4) The College of Engineering, and 5) The College of Medicine. This new degree is a multidisciplinary collaboration that is driven by industry needs. The Esports and Game industry is growing at an enormous pace over the past few years. According to Newzoo’s 2018 Global Esports Market Report the global esports revenues have grown over 30% for the past three years and this rate is expected to continue beyond 2021. The revenues in the industry were $250 million in 2015 and expected to reach $1.65 billion by 2021. This growth has created a dearth of properly trained college graduates to fill industry needs. This new UG major has been created to fill the void in industry. -

Gender Representation Through the Horrors of Fatal Frame (2001)
nrik v He d a apa l sk Ma GENDER REPRESENTATION THROUGH THE HORRORS OF FATAL FRAME (2001) Textual analysis into female gender representation in the Japanese survival horror game, Fatal Frame (2001). Master Degree Project in Informatics One year Level 22.5 ECTS Spring term 2021 Vanja Waller Supervisor: Björn Berg Marklund Examiner: Rebecca Rouse Abstract Gender representation in the horror genre has many interesting discussions surrounding it through multiple perspectives such as psychoanalysis and culture. This article intends to expand the investigation of how female characters are portrayed in horror games. The research on female representation will investigate the potential connections between horror cinema and horror games in the survival horror game Fatal Frame (2001, Koei Tecmo), the first title of a series that is iconic f0r drawing inspiration from Japanese mythology and horror tropes while simultaneously using a large cast of female characters. To gather information about the audience to support the game analysis, an online survey will be released targeting players of the games. Thereafter, recorded, non-commentary footage of the first game, Fatal Frame (2001), will be observed and textually analysed through a framework with data points, based on the background of psychoanalysis, horror cinema, culture, and game theory. Keywords: horror games, gender representation, female gender, horror cinema, female protagonist, Fatal Frame, Japanese horror, survival horror, audience analysis Table of Contents 1 Introduction ....................................................................................................... -
