ABSTRACT Greek Versus Modern Tragedy in Eugene O’Neill Maria do Perpétuo Socorro Rêgo Reis Cosme Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina 1998 Supervising Professor: Dra. Bernadete Pasold Tragedy in the classical sense has been continuously revised /revived in modem time through its various possibilities and many playwrights have attempted to revise the genre with great success. The American playwright Eugene O’Neill is among those who purposely adapt the classical mode to his modem “tragic” plays, especially in his trilogy Mourning Becomes Electra . The purpose of this dissertation is to characterize “modern tragedy” as represented by Eugene O’Neill through the myth of Electra in his trilogyMourning Becomes Electra. This present work concentrates on the question whether O’Neill, a modern playwright by definition and by time, can be considered a classical tragedian in modem terms. This dissertation investigates the presence of the characteristics of the Greek tragedy in Eugene O’Neill by showing that he follows the classic conception of tragedy found in Aristotle’sPoetics. This work also shows that O’Neill adopts the pattems, myths and themes of the Greek theater in his modem tragedies, especially in the studied trilogy: Mourning Becomes Electra The investigation is undertaken through the comparative study between Greek tragedy as represented by three Greek playwrights; Aschylus’ Oresteia, Sophocles’ Electra and Euripides’Electra and modem tragedy as exemplified by O’Neill’s trilogy Mourning Becomes Electra. This dissertation also discusses myth and tragedy according to Aristotle and associates the vast interpretations of myth active in critical literature especially found in Freud, Jung, Lévi- Strauss, Barthes and Nietzsche to Greek tragedy, to the myth of Electra and to O’Neill in particular . The basic hypothesis of this research is that O’Neill is a modern playwright but with classical characteristics who used the resources of the Greek tragedy by adapting, revising and principally subverting the classical themes and myths to his “revival” of the classic tragedy in his modern tragedy especially found in his trilogyMourning Becomes Electra. This hypothesis is based on O’Neill’s personal interviews (quoted in Bogard; 3 94-403 ) where he exposes his intentional “revivals” of the Greek versions of the famous myths. Throughout the development of the thesis I attempt to show the similarities and differences between O’Neill and the Greek playwrights in order to inquire if O’Neill is more similar than different from the Greeks. This dissertation also intends to illuminate O’Neill’s work by using the comparative method, since this is basically a dissertation on O’Neill as an example of a modem playwright with classical characteristics and themes. O teatrólogo Norte-Americano Eugene O’Neill está entre aqueles que intencionalmente adaptam o modo clássico em sua peças “trágicas” modernas, especialmente em sua trilogia Mourning Becomes Electra ( O luto se toma Electra ). Este presente trabalho concentra-se na questão se O’Neill, um teatrólogo moderno por definição e no tempo, pode ser considerado um escritor trágico em tempos modernos. A dissertação investiga a presença de características da tragédia Grega em O’Neill, mostrando que ele segue o conceito clássico de tragédia encontrado Poéticana de Aristóteles. Este trabalho também demonstra que O’ Neill adota mitos, temas e estmturas do teatro Grego em suas tragédias Modemas, especialmente na trilogia estudada: Mourning Becomes Electra Esta investigação é feita através do estudo comparativo entre a tragédia Grega, representada por três dramaturgos Gregos: Ésquilo com sua tragédia, a trilogia Oresteia, Sofócles com Electra e Euripides com Electra, e a tragédia moderna representada pela trilogia de O’Neill:Mourning Becomes Electra. Esta dissertação também discute mito e tragédia de acordo com Aristóteles e associa as vastas interpretações de mito presentes na literatura crítica, especialmente encontrada em Freud, Jung, Lévi- Strauss, Barthes e Nietzsche, à tragédia Grega, ao mito de Electra e a O’Neill em particular. A hipótese básica desta pesquisa é que O’Neill é um teatrólogo modemo mas com características “clássicas” na sua obra trágica e que usou os recursos da tragédia Grega através da adaptação, revisão e principalmente “subversão” dos temas e mitos clássicos em seu “revival” da tragédia Grega na sua tragédia moderna especialmente em Mourning Becomes Electra. A hipótese é baseada em entrevistas pessoais de O’Neill (citadas em Bogard: 394 - 403 ) onde ele fala de suas “revivais” (recriações) intencionais das versões Gregas dos mitos famosos. No desenvolvimento da tese nós tentamos mostrar as semelhanças e diferenças entre O’Neill e os Gregos. Este trabalho também pretende iluminar a obra de O’Neill através do uso do método comparativo, desde que esta é basicamente uma dissertação em O’Neill como exemplo de teatrólogo moderno com características e temas clássicos. Número de páginas : 256 Número de palavras : 77.324 Résumé La tragédie dans le sens classique continue d’être révisé et renouvelée à l’époque moderne par ses dififérentes possibilités et beaucoup de dramaturges ont réussi à actualiser le genre. Le dramaturge américain Eugene O’Neill est l’un de ceux qui ont intentionellement adapté le mode classique dans ses tragédies. C’ést le cas de la trilogie Mourning Becomes Electra . Ce travail relève de la question suivante: O’Neill, un dramaturge moderne avant tout, pourrait-il être défini comme un écrivain tragique moderne? La dissertation essaie de repérer les caractéristiques de la tragédie grecque chez O’Neill et au même temps montrer qui ‘il suit le concept classique de tragédie présent dans la Poétique d’Aristote. Cette dissertation montre aussi qu ‘O’Neill se sert de mythes, thèmes et structures du théâtre Grec pour écrire ses tragédies modernes, surtout dans notre object d’étude, la trilogieMourning Becomes Electra . Le travail fait une analyse comparative entre la tragédie grecque et la tragédie moderne. La première est représentée par Eschyle: -Oresteia -; 1’ Électre de Sophocle et l’Électre d’ Euripide. La seconde, par la trilogie d’O’NeillMourning Becomes Electra. Cette dissertation en même temps qu’elle discute le mythe et la tragédie selon Aristote, elle présente les différentes interprétations du mythe trouvées dans la critique littéraire, chez Freud, Jung, Lévi - Strauss, Barthes et Nietzsche, et les met en rapport avec le mythe d’Électre et avec O’Neill particulièrement. L’hypothèse qui soutient cette enquête est le fait d’être O’Neill un dramaturge moderne aux caractéristiques classiques qui a utilisé dans son oeuvre tragique les resources de la tragédie grecque par l ‘adaptation de quelques thèmes et mythes classiques lors de son renouveau de la tragédie grecque si bien représenté parMourning Becomes Electra. In this book Laura Carrara (C.) offers an edition with introduction and com- mentary (including two appendices, an extensive bibliography and indexes) of three fragmentary plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, which focus on the story of a mythical descendant of Melampus, the prophet and sorcerer Polyidus of Corinth, and his dealings with the son of Minos, Glaucus, whose life he saved. These plays are the Cressae, Manteis and Polyidus respectively. In the introduction C. gives an extensive survey of the sources on Polyidus in earlier periods and in literary genres other than tragedy. He plays a sec- ondary part in several stories (as in Pi. O. 13.74-84, where he is helping Bellerophon to control Pegasus) and only in the Cretan story about Glaucus he is the main character. C. observes that in archaic literature we find no traces of this story, but even so regards it as likely that the tragic poets did not invent it (perhaps finding it in an archaic Melampodia). Starting from Il. 13.636-672, where Polyidus predicts the death of his son Euchenor, C. first discusses the various archaic sources in detail and then goes on to various later kinds of prose and poetry, offering a full diachronic picture of the evidence on Polyidus. In the next chapter C. discusses a 5th century kylix, which is the only evidence in visual art of the Cretan story and more or less contemporary with the tragic plays.

    THE ZODIAC: COMPARISON OF THE ANCIENT GREEK MYTHOLOGY AND THE POPULAR ROMANIAN BELIEFS DOINA IONESCU *, FLORA ROVITHIS ** , ELENI ROVITHIS-LIVANIOU *** Abstract : This paper intends to draw a comparison between the ancient Greek Mythology and the Romanian folk beliefs for the Zodiac. So, after giving general information for the Zodiac, each one of the 12 zodiac signs is described. Besides, information is given for a few astronomical subjects of special interest, together with Romanian people believe and the description of Greek myths concerning them. Thus, after a thorough examination it is realized that: a) The Greek mythology offers an explanation for the consecration of each Zodiac sign, and even if this seems hyperbolic in almost most of the cases it was a solution for things not easily understood at that time; b) All these passed to the Romanians and influenced them a lot firstly by the ancient Greeks who had built colonies in the present Romania coasts as well as via commerce, and later via the Romans, and c) The Romanian beliefs for the Zodiac is also connected to their deep Orthodox religious character, with some references also to their history. Finally, a general discussion is made and some agricultural and navigator suggestions connected to Pleiades and Hyades are referred, too. Keywords : Zodiac, Greek, mythology, tradition, religion.     Hesiod (8th or 7th c. BC, composed in Greek) The Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are probably slightly earlier than Hesiod’s two surviving poems, the Works and Days and the Theogony. Yet in many ways Hesiod is the more important author for the study of Greek mythology. While Homer treats cer- tain aspects of the saga of the Trojan War, he makes no attempt at treating myth more generally. He often includes short digressions and tantalizes us with hints of a broader tra- dition, but much of this remains obscure. Hesiod, by contrast, sought in his Theogony to give a connected account of the creation of the universe. For the study of myth he is im- portant precisely because his is the oldest surviving attempt to treat systematically the mythical tradition from the first gods down to the great heroes. Also unlike the legendary Homer, Hesiod is for us an historical figure and a real per- sonality. His Works and Days contains a great deal of autobiographical information, in- cluding his birthplace (Ascra in Boiotia), where his father had come from (Cyme in Asia Minor), and the name of his brother (Perses), with whom he had a dispute that was the inspiration for composing the Works and Days. His exact date cannot be determined with precision, but there is general agreement that he lived in the 8th century or perhaps the early 7th century BC. His life, therefore, was approximately contemporaneous with the beginning of alphabetic writing in the Greek world. Although we do not know whether Hesiod himself employed this new invention in composing his poems, we can be certain that it was soon used to record and pass them on.

The Zodiac or Mazzaroth will be plotted onto the Earth geographically to suggest that the Taurus-Orion constellations in the Heavenlies amazingly reflect the topographical configuration of Greece as Orion and Turkey as Taurus and its locality on Earth. The precise ancient locations to the 7 Churches of Asia correlate as the Hyades of Taurus. Amazingly, the Taurus Mountains thus correspond in relative distance as are the Pleiades in modern day Turkey to the Hyades of Taurus. The constellation Taurus with Pleiades mirrors its opposite geographic position with Pleiades as the 7 Churches adjacent the Taurus Mountains of Turkey. They are distanced apart in a similar pattern from the Taurus Mountains opposite their positions as are the Pleiades from the Head of Taurus. The 7 Churches of Asia from the book of Revelation are geographically in a 'V” shape like the horns of a Bull. This region is called the Hyades and is considered also a pyramid with the Church of Pergamum as the ‘capstone’. This was the ancient ‘Seat or Throne of Satan’. The Witness of the Stars The 12 constellations in the Heavens can be mapped out on Earth as they mirror their positions with key geographic latitudes and longitudes. Symbols and numbers play a significant role in all things spirituality as YHVH is the author of mathematics and design. Each Zodiac symbol has a meaning ascribed to the redemptive work of Christ.

After he returned home victorious, he was murdered by his wife Clytemnestra, and her lover, Aegisthus. • Ajax –a Greek warrior in the Trojan War who is described as being of colossal stature, second only to Achilles in courage and strength. He was however slow witted and excessively proud. • Amazons –a nation of warrior women. The Amazons burned off their right breasts so that they could use a bow and arrow more efficiently in war.

By this I refer to the pro- cess by which dramatic space acquires meaning—the skene, for example, becoming a sign denoting the House of Atreus, or an offstage area beyond view coming to represent Mount Cithaeron. Each drama generates its own set of significant spaces which may have connotations enriched by the internal action of the play or by the external knowledge of the audi- ence, and these spaces may in turn contribute to the meaning of a char- acter or the response of an audience.1 As a brief illustration, consider the prologue of Aeschylus’ Eumenides, spoken by the priestess at Delphi. Only gradually does she identify the skene, beginning instead by invoking Gaia and her daughter Themis, whose prophetic powers were eventually passed down to Apollo; thus she endows Apollo’s Temple with a power and authority almost as old as the world itself (–), while also indicat- ing her own identity and stature. The shocking reentry of the priestess a few lines later, crawling on all fours from within the temple (–), con- sequently undermines the authority of the temple and generates a new, horrifying space within. Dramatic space may be dense and complex, and I could not begin to unpack this opening scene without considering the ritual space implied by the oracle, and the geographical space suggested by those Athenians who escorted Apollo on his way from Delos to Delphi (–). My aim in this essay, however, is more limited, exploring one charac- ter’s relation to dramatic space, and my thesis is that Sophocles’ Electra handles this unusually: the protagonist, I shall argue, fails to occupy a significant place—partly because she is excluded from those that seem to acquire importance, and partly because the places she does occupy are emptied of meaning (they fall short as signs).
