She graduated in 1963 from the College of William and Mary (A.B) with a major in Greek language and history. In 1974 she received a Master of Management degree from the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University. Throughout her school career she was an advocate for women’s rights, an avocation she carried into her adulthood with her participation in organizations that worked for equality. From 1969 until 1974 she worked for NOW, a civil rights organization dedicated to bringing women into the mainstream of society. She founded the Nashville Chapter of NOW in 1971, published the monthly newsletter, served as public spokesperson, and held responsibilities for lobbying the State Legislature for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. These papers contain materials on NOW Nashville’s creation and document Crater’s important and dedicated longtime participation in the group. Fran Crater’s professional life has included being a mental health administrator, Director of Disability Determination Services (DDS) for the state of Tennessee, and more recently a grant writing consultant and coordinator for Centerstone Community Mental Health Centers in Nashville. She is married and has two children. Scope and Content Note Most of these papers are records of Fran Crater’s work with the women’s movement in the first half of the 1970’s when the growth of the National Organization for Women (NOW) was countrywide, and when the work for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment was a major movement throughout the United States.

The project uses a single event, a student organized symposium on Women’s Liberation held in 1973, as the focal point for a discussion of short and long-term effects of the movement on gender equality at the institutional level. It will be shown that, while the student led action in the few years surrounding 1973 succeeded in fostering campus discourse and mobilizing support, long term institutional changes, often faculty led, can most accurately be understood as products of the Women’s Liberation movement more generally.

    ELIZABETH SEPPER & DEBORAH DINNER Sex in Public abstract. This Article recounts the first history of sex in public accommodations law—a his- tory essential to debates that rage today over gender and sexuality in public. Just fifty years ago, not only LGBTQ people but also cisgender women were the subject of discrimination in public. Restaurants and bars displayed “men-only” signs. Women held secondary status in civic organi- zations, such as Rotary and Jaycees, and were excluded altogether from many professional bodies, such as press clubs. Sports—from the Little League to the golf club—kept girls and women from achieving athletic excellence. Financial institutions subsumed married women’s identities within those of their husbands. Over the course of the 1970s, the feminist movement protested and liti- gated against sex discrimination in public accommodations. They secured state laws opening up commerce and leisure for “full and equal enjoyment” by both sexes. When “sex” was added to state public accommodations laws, feminists, their opponents, and government actors understood sex equality in public to signify more than equal access to public spaces. It also implicated freedom from the regulation of sexuality and gender performance and held the potential to transform in- stitutions central to dominant masculinity, like baseball fields and bathrooms. This history in- forms the interpretation of public accommodations laws in controversies from same-sex couples’ wedding cakes to transgender people’s restroom access. authors. University of Pittsburgh, 2004 This dissertation analyzes the impact of civil rights, women’s rights, and gay rights activists on public policy in Pittsburgh during the 1960s and 1970s. It challenges several of the interpretations which other scholars have made about the history and impact of the New Left and social movements in the United States since 1960. This study applies social network analysis to politics to explain the successes and failures these social movements had in the city in winning the reforms that they sought for their communities. As the activists grew in their political sophistication, so their political networks matured. Pittsburgh activists did not ignore the means of power that social movement scholars traditionally study, power at the polls and in the streets. But in addition to such tools, activists built a base of trust, respect, and mutual support between themselves and local politicians.

Most topics are divided into specific subtopics with each entry listed only once; thus, there are no cross-references. Some of the entries are annotated. A list of related bibliographical sources and an index to authors conclude the bibliography.
