  • Report of the Director of the Mint
Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 1915 EEPORT OF THE DIRECTOR OF THE MINT. TREASURY DEPARTMENT, BUREAU OF THE MINT, Washington, D. 0., Novemher 1, 1915. SIR: In compliance with the provisions of section 345, Revised Statutes of the United States, I have the honor to submit herewith a report covering the operations of the mints and assay offices of the United States for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1915, being the forty- third annual report of the Director of the Mint. There is also sub mitted for publication in connection therewith the annual report of this bureau upon the production and consumption of the precious metals in the United States for the calendar year 1914. OPERATIONS OF THE MINTS AND ASSAY OFFICES. In many ways the fiscal year 1915 was the most eventful in the history of the mmt service; certainly it was as regards the New York assay office and the San Francisco Mint. The movement of gold from the United States in the first three months and the movement of this metal to our shores in the last three months were on such a tremendous scale that the patience, skill, and capacity of the officials and employees at these institutions w^ere sorely taxed. Since July 1, 1915, the volume of business has increased so steadily and so rapidly that the records show the total value of the deposits at the New York assay office for the first four months of the fiscal year 1916 to be $126,224,600 or nearly that of the deposits for the whole of 1908—$131,X92',227—which has heretofore been this office's banner fiscal year.

  • The Big Reset: War on Gold and the Financial Endgame
WILL s A system reset seems imminent. The world’s finan- cial system will need to find a new anchor before the year 2020. Since the beginning of the credit s crisis, the US realized the dollar will lose its role em as the world’s reserve currency, and has been planning for a monetary reset. According to Willem Middelkoop, this reset MIDD Willem will be designed to keep the US in the driver’s seat, allowing the new monetary system to include significant roles for other currencies such as the euro and China’s renminbi. s Middelkoop PREPARE FOR THE COMING RESET E In all likelihood gold will be re-introduced as one of the pillars LKOOP of this next phase in the global financial system. The predic- s tion is that gold could be revalued at $ 7,000 per troy ounce. By looking past the American ‘smokescreen’ surrounding gold TWarh on Golde and the dollar long ago, China and Russia have been accumu- lating massive amounts of gold reserves, positioning them- THE selves for a more prominent role in the future to come. The and the reset will come as a shock to many. The Big Reset will help everyone who wants to be fully prepared. Financial illem Middelkoop (1962) is founder of the Commodity BIG Endgame Discovery Fund and a bestsell- s ing author, who has been writing about the world’s financial system since the early 2000s. Between 2001 W RESET and 2008 he was a market commentator for RTL Television in the Netherlands and also BIG appeared on CNBC.

To Moos and Misha In the absence of the gold standard, there is no way to protect savings from confiscation through inflation. There is no safe store of value. If there were, the government would have to make its holding illegal, as was done in the case of gold. If everyone decided, for example, to convert all his bank deposits to silver or copper or any other good, and thereafter declined to accept checks as payment for goods, bank deposits would lose their purchasing power and government-created bank credit would be worthless as a claim on goods.

  • A Brief Statistical History of Hawai'i1
ROBERT C. SCHMITT A Brief Statistical History of Hawai'i1 STATISTICS IN ANCIENT HAWAI'I Hawaiian statistics go back a long way—at least to the 16th century, and perhaps earlier—but we know relatively little about them. The ancient Hawaiians devised a counting system based on multiples of four and ten. Although words for numbers from one ('akahi) to ten ('umi) were typically short, larger numbers were often polysyllabic. Thirteen, for example, was 'umikumdmakolu, and 85,650 was 'elua kini, ho'okahi memo, 'ehd lau, 'akahi kanaka me ka 'umi. Early foreign resi- dents like missionary E. W. Clark recorded numbers as high as 40,000 (kini), 400,000 (lehu), and even 4,000,000 (nalowale). "When they had arrived at 40, they returned to one and counted to 40 again," Clark noted. "The words iako and kaau are sometimes used for 40 instead of kanaka. Iako is used for counting tapas; kaau is counting fish; and kanaka in counting rope, cord, bundles of food, etc."2 Arithmetic was primitive and laborious. Clark wrote: Their computations were all performed in the mind, . often making use of the fingers of one or both hands to assist their calculations. They had nothing like arithmetical rules. All their calculations were performed by counting. If they wished to ascertain how much 1 o yds. of cloth would cost at $5. per yard, they would count thus, 1 yard is 5 dollars; 2 yds. is 5 more or 10; 3 yds. is 5 more or 15, and so on to 8 Robert C. Schmitt is a retired statistician for the Hawai'i Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism, and a frequent contributor to the Journal.
