Chapter 6 Choctaw and Creek Removals The idea of indian removal as a government obligation first reared its head in 1802 when officials of the state of Georgia made an agreement with federal government officials. In the Georgia Compact, the state of Georgia gave up its claims to territorial lands west of that state in exchange for $1,250,000 and a promise that the federal government would abolish Indian title to Georgia lands as soon as possible. How seriously the government took its obligation to Georgia at the time of the agreement is unknown. The following year, however, the Louisiana Purchase was made, and almost immedi- ately, the trans-Mississippi area was seen by some as the answer to “The Indian Problem.” Not everyone agreed. Some congress- men argued that removal to the West was impractical because of land-hungry whites who could not be restrained from crossing the mighty river to obtain land. Although their conclusion was correct, it was probably made more in opposition to President Jefferson than from any real con- cern about the Indians or about practicality. Although some offers were made by government officials to officials of various tribes, little Pushmataha, Choctaw was done about removing the southeastern tribes before the War of 1812. warrior During that war several Indian tribes supported the British. Harbour: From Poverty to Prosperity: The Path of Education among the Mississippi Choctaw (Under the direction of Malinda Maynor Lowery) The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians knew early in their post-recognition existence that education was the key to future success for the tribe. From 1945 to 1963, the MBCI methodically built the framework for an autonomous school district that would provide students with a comprehensive curriculum that addressed tribal needs. The crowning achievement of this project was a high school that kept tribal members in the community for their secondary education. This analysis traces the creation of Choctaw Central High School from conception to completion and highlights the contributions of tribal leaders in making the project a major tribal success. Tribal Chairmen like Emmet York and Philip Martin helped develop a progressive school curriculum and the capital necessary to fund the school as an independent entity. Karr* Unconsciously the savage, in his primitive thought concepts based upon physical reaction, went beyond either morality or its religious correlations. The abstractconcepts of good and evil, as we understandthem, and as Christianitybroadcast them through the mouthpiece of its anthropomorphicgodhead, meant nothing at all to the savage. Because of this, in all primitive societies, punishment, as observed and examined through humanitarian spectacles, is a barbarousprocedure.' Euro-American civilization's interpretations of alien societies demonstrates a narrow understanding of different cultures and customs. Too often modem societies imposed their own standards of social interaction upon societies deemed to be primitive with the intent of establishing more humane principles among these peoples. -

Racial slavery was a critical element in the cultural development of the Choctaws and was a derivative of the peculiar institution in southern states. The idea of genial and hospitable slave owners can no more be conclusively demonstrated for the Choctaws than for the antebellum South. The participation of Choctaws in the Civil War and formal alliance with the Confederacy was dominantly influenced by the slaveholding and a connection with southern identity, but was also influenced by financial concerns and an inability to remain neutral than a protection of the peculiar institution. Had the Civil War not taken place, the rate of Choctaw slave ownership possibly would have reached the level of southern states and the Choctaws would be considered part of the South. Figures and/or pictures may be missing from this format of the document.*** Article: Few Choctaws from the early 1800s are better known than Pushmataha. He negotiated several well-publicized treaties with the United States, led Choctaws in support of the Americans during the War of 1812, is mentioned in nearly all histories of the Choctaws, was famously painted by Charles Bird King in 1824, is buried in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C., and, in April 2001, a new Pushmataha portrait was unveiled to hang in the Hall of Fame of the State of Mississippi in the Old Capitol Museum in Jackson, Mississippi. Early twentieth-century ethnologist John Swanton referred to Pushmataha as the “greatest of all Choctaw chiefs.”1 Despite his seeming familiarity, Pushmataha's life is not as well documented nor as well known as a careful biographer would like. What is known suggests that Pushmataha was an exceptional man and charismatic leader. He had deep roots in the ancient Choctaw world, a world characterized by spiritual power and traditional notions of culture. In addition, Pushmataha effectively confronted a rapidly changing era caused by the ever- expanding European and American presence. Early life Nearly all knowledge about Pushmataha's early life comes from the recollections of two men, only one of whom actually remembered meeting Pushmataha. -

WESLEYWHICKER, Attica Tecumseh, the celebrated Shawnee chief, was born in 1768 at the Shawnee village of Piqua in the state of Ohio. His father was killed in the battle of Point Pleasant in 1774. The Shawnee town of Piqua was destroyed by the Kentuckians in 1780. After the death of his father Tecumseh was placed under the care of his elder brother who in turn was killed in a battle with the whites on the Tennessee frontier in 1788, and still another of his brothers was killed by his side at Wayne's Victory in 1794. His mother was born in the state of Alabama and was a Creek Indian by birth. The Creek Indians, Choctaws, Chick- asaws, Seminoles and Cherokees were Muscogeans, while the Shawnees were Algonquins. In 1811 in making a speech at Tallassee, Alabama on the Tallapoosa river, to five thousand Muscogean warriors, he said : 0, Muscogeans, brethren of my mother, brush from your eyelids the sleep of 'slavery. Once more strike for vengeancc. Once more strike for your country. The spirits of the mighty dead complain. Their tears drop from the weeping skies. Let the white race perish. Burn their dwellings. Destroy their stock. Slay their wives and children. The red men own this country. The pale face must never enjoy it. Tecumseh was more fitted than any Indian chieftain to form a great confederacy of all the western and southern tribes to oppose the advance of the white settlers of the 316 Indiana Magazine of History United States. -
