LEVI In the January 15, 2011, broadcast of the popular American television show Saturday Night Live, a skit was performed mimicking the extravagance of the MTV show My Super Sweet 16, where parents go way beyond the average family’s means to celebrate their child’s birthday.1 In this particular skit, a Jewish father throws an extravagant party for his son’s bar mitzvah and invites impersonators of popular contemporary artists to sing at the event. The performers sing humorous renditions of Taylor Swift, Jay Z, and Katy Perry’s chart-topping hits, inserting Jewish references into the lyrics. As the father introduces the final artist to perform, he sees that the performer’s last name is “Green,” a common Jewish name, and so he introduces the artist as “Cee Lo, oh Green, a member of the tribe.” However, when the black hip-hop artist Cee Lo Green emerges, and the father realizes that Green is black, he quickly retracts his statement by uttering “um, or not.” This retraction provokes laughter from the members of the audience—laughter that might indicate that they too are not prepared to imagine that Green could be a Jew.2 This instant disqualification was based on a physical attribute—skin tone— which trumped the assumption that Green could be a Jew based on his name. This skit captures a global perception that to be Jewish and to be black cannot be synonymous. Judaism, which is seemingly tethered to a notion of lineage and ethnicity, can be considered exclusive.

    IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE: TWO TALES OF JEWISH ORIGIN AMONG THE GA-ADANGME OF ACCRA IN 2015 Dr. Daniel Lis ABSTRACT: In Accra, two houses represent two distinct places that portray memories of a Jewish origin. One of them is the stool house of the royal Nikolai family. On a mural the wanderings of the Ga- Adangme ancestors from Israel into West Africa is portrayed. The other house holds the burial place of Wulff Joseph Wulff, a Danish Jew who settled in Osu in 1836. In this article, I will compare the two narratives and reflect on how both contribute to a contemporary Jew- ish myth of the origin of the Ga-Adangme-speaking peoples of Ghana. In the hustle and bustle of Ghana’s capital city, Accra, two houses a few miles apart represent two distinct places that portray mem- ories of a Jewish or Hebrew/Israelite origin among the Ga- Adangme-speaking peoples. One of them, in Ussher Town, one of Accra’s oldest neighbour- hoods is the stool house of the royal Nikolai family of the Asere Division. On a mural in the courtyard of the compound, the wan- derings of the Ga-Adangme ancestor, Ayi Kushie, from Israel to Ethiopia and of Nikolai (Ni Koi Olai), the patriarch of the Asere, from Kush (Sudan) into West Africa in 1424 are portrayed. From there, one of his descendants, Nii Nikolai Ashaley I, led his peo- ple to the coastal area, where they settled at Ga Mashie, present- day Accra, in 1660. The other house, a 30-minute walk along the coast to the east on Castle Drive in Osu, Christiansborg (present-day Accra) and op- posite the old Danish cemetery, holds the burial place of Wulff Joseph Wulff, a Danish Jew who settled in Osu (present-day Ac- cra) in 1836.Through his relationship with a local woman, Wulff established the line of the Wulffs within Osu’s prominent fami- lies.

    THE ETHIOPIAN-ISRAELI COMMUNITY Updated February 2021 In December 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the first of a series of flights brought hundreds of new Ethiopian immigrants to Israel. The journeys took place as part of a decision by the Israeli government to enable the immigration of some 2,000 members of the Falas Mora community (see below), many of whom already have immediate family members living in the Jewish state. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior ministers attended various arrivals, witnessing the emotional family reunification scenes that took place at Ben Gurion International Airport. Minister of Aliyah and Absorption Pnina Tamanu-Shata, who herself made Aliyah with her family as a child from Ethiopia, accompanied one of the flights. Ethiopian Aliyah is a cause that has long been championed by Jewish Federations, and Federation funding has strongly supported efforts to facilitate the process of immigration and absorption carried out by The Jewish Agency for Israel, as well as other partners, including The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Ethiopian National Project.     Swimming in the Gene Pool: Israelite Kinship Relations, Genes, and Genealogy Matthew Roper he Book of Mormon claims an ancient Israelite heritage for the TAmerican Indian, and since identifiable genetic evidence that might connect contemporary Native Americans with modern Jews is lacking, critics of the Book of Mormon assert that this contradicts the revelations of Joseph Smith and long-held traditional views about the Book of Mormon. Further, the critics suggest Latter-day Saints should abandon their belief that the Book of Mormon is an authen- tic account of an ancient American people and concede it to be an anachronistic specimen of nineteenth-century racist ideology.1 Several assumptions underlie these arguments against the Book of Mormon, and these are not always made clear. For example, what do we really know about the hereditary background of Israel and the ancient Near East? Were they a uniform genetic group? What genetic characteristics would distinguish an ancient Israelite population from other Asiatic groups of the same era? Are modern Jewish populations hereditarily the same as ancient Israelite populations? Are modern Asiatic populations hereditarily the same as ancient Asiatic popula- tions? Those who wish to demonstrate on the basis of DNA studies that Native American populations do not have Israelite roots should first establish what an ancient Israelite source population should be like. When one examines the biblical account and later Jewish his- tory, however, it becomes clear that Israel was never a genetically homogeneous entity. Further, examination of the nature of ancient Israel raises similar questions about the genetic heritage of the “peo- ple of Lehi” (3 Nephi 4:11) as described in the Book of Mormon.
