13 EXHIBITION: TONGUES, ECHOES Matias Armendaris, Hyang Cho, Olivia Whetung curated by Areum Kim December 3, 2016 – January 21, 2017 Opening Reception Friday, December 2, 2016, 7:00 PM

In the cave-like platform of the mouth, the tongue is an agent of speech: it conflates the anatomical with the linguistic. But the tongue is also political. The phrase “mother tongue,” for example, suggests ways that notions of origin are inextricable from the body, and from epistemology, geopolitics, mobility, and histories of colonization. Tongues, Echoes: Matias Armendaris, Hyang Cho, and Olivia Whetung explores the physicality and “bodiliness” of a given language, as well as the historical and cultural texts that are its sediment. Manipulating textual, sonal and time-based elements, the artists attempt a material translation, querying the possibilities of agency, reclamation, and distortion within the conditions of our lived time.

* MATIAS ARMENDARIS is an Ecuadorian artist based in Mexico City. He received a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design (2015) and has exhibited in Canada, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, and Slovenia. Through drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and installation, Armendaris explores the formal structures of language and metaphors of translation as a method of representation, seeking to generate refiguration of power dynamics, binary and structures resulting from the global and neoliberal contemporary culture. HYANG CHO was born in Seoul, Korea and currently lives and works in Guelph, . She holds a BA from Sogang University, Seoul, Korea (1998), a BFA from Alberta College of Art and Design (2007), and an MFA from the University of Guelph (2009). Cho uses language as her primary medium to question the authority and values embedded therein, and to consider the irrationality of existing rules, order, and systems of the society in which she is implicated. OLIVIA WHETUNG is a member of Curve Lake First Nation and a citizen of the Nishnaabeg Nation. She completed her BFA with a minor in Anishinaabemowin at Algoma University (2013) and her MFA in Visual Art at the University of British Colombia (2016). Her work explores acts of/active native presence, as well as the challenges of working with/in/through Indigenous languages in an art world dominated by the English language. She is a recipient of a CGS-M Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Award and an Aboriginal Graduate Fellowship. AREUM KIM received her BFA with a Curatorial Studies Minor from Emily Carr University of Art and Design (2015). Alongside nurturing her writing, translation, and curatorial practice, Kim held the position of Curatorial Assistant at Access Gallery and is currently the Assistant Director at Stride Gallery in Calgary. 16 EXHIBITION: WE COME TO WITNESS: SONNY ASSU IN DIALOGUE WITH EMILY CARR To April 23, 2017

On display at the Vancouver Art Gallery from December 2, 2016 to April 23, 2017, We Come to Witness is a dialogue between the art of modernist painter Emily Carr and contemporary artist Sonny Assu. In this exhibition, Assu creates a series of digital tags on Emily Carr’s paintings selected from the Vancouver Art Gallery’s collection, challenging the portrayal of Indigenous peoples as a vanishing race by interrupting Carr’s landscapes with an insertion of ovoids and u-shapes. The exhibition also includes Assu’s masks juxtaposed with Carr’s paintings and a special ceramic collaboration with artist Brendan Tang. Altogether, the paintings, digital prints, sculptures and ceramic installations in We Come to Witness appropriate, transform and intervene to explore the effects of colonization, providing an alternative depiction of the Canadian landscape.

22 WORKSHOP: ON @ HOMESTEAD JUNCTION Healing City Soils Sun, January 8, 1:00 – 4:00pm Cost:$30 Making sure the soil is healthy is a first step to any urban agriculture project from backyard growing to community and boulevard gardening. Urban soils can sometimes contain heavy metals and other contaminants as a result of our industrial past and present. This is not so great for our urban food gardens as the contaminants can get into or onto our veggies and fruits and damage our health. This workshop will introduce common urban contaminants and what you can do to grow food safely if you have them (or think you might), and how to work with plants, compost, and mushrooms to address the contamination over the longer term. Instructor Bio: Danielle Stevenson is a fungi enthusiast living in ‘Victoria’ with 4 years of mushroom cultivation experience and a background in permaculture, organic food production and community-based work towards food sovereignty. She launched D.I.Y. Fungi to offer educational workshops and mushroom cultures (a.k.a. “spawn”) for people of all ages to grow their own fungal food and medicine at their homes, gardens and farms; and to regenerate land and water systems by allying with fungi, plants, people and back Homemade Mead Sun, January 15, 11:30am-2:30pm Cost:$50 For many of us, mead has always been that vaguely ill-defined medieval beverage quaffed in Robin Hood movies. Surprise, it’s just a wine made from honey instead of grape juice. It’s also likely the oldest fermented beverage we know of, and one of the few that can ferment naturally without human intervention. This instructional workshop, intended for those with little or no wine-making experience, explores how to make small-batch meads with minimum amounts of equipment, personal time, and expense. By the end of this workshop, you will have enough information and equipment to make a 5-bottle batch of one of a variety of meads from start to tasty finish. Instructor Bio: Stuart Morris was first introduced to wine-making as a child by his parents a very long time ago, although more bottle-washing was involved than wine-making at the time. He currently has over four hundred bottles-worth of mead, wine, country wine, and sake bubbling around his house. Other active interests are the making of vinegar, sauerkraut, garum, cheese, pickles, all forms of charcuterie, canning, soap- making, beekeeping, culinary foraging, vegetable gardening, composting and soil conditioning, and faux vintage woodwork. How to Make Fire: Herbal Home remedies for Colds and Flus Cider Tues, January 17, 6:30-8:30pm Cost: $35 Flu season is now upon us – come learn how to make and use herbal remedies for common colds and flus! We will focus on using herbs that are easy to find: culinary herbs and spices. Participants will gain understanding of how to differentiate symptoms to pick the most appropriate herbs, and how to prepare herbal infusions. We will make Fire Cider together for participants to take home. This class will provide accessible and useful knowledge to share with family and friends. *Participants are asked to bring a 500ml jar – also available for purchase at the store Urban Foraging Plant Walk Sat, February 4, 11:00am-1:00pm Cost:$25 From under park benches to cracks in the sidewalks to boulevards around the park, we can find food and medicine growing all around us even in the most urban settings.

Join indigenous Metis herbalist, mother, and story-teller Lori Snyder for a wild plant walk around the neighborhood to discover new perspectives on how we see and interact with plants in the city. As we encounter different plants along our way, Lori will share her knowledge and experience in foraging for food, wildcrafting, and so much more! To learn a bit more about

Please contact [email protected] before purchasing a ticket for a child – we will check in with the instructor about age accessibility. Home Remedies with T’uy’t’tanat-Cease Wyss Sun, February 5, 11:30am-3:30pm

Learn how to create your own natural medicine cabinet using non-alcohol ingredients as bases. This fun and easy workshop will help you prepare seasonal remedies for you and your family. We will be working with both fresh and dried herbs.

We will make one slow brewed glycerine tincture which are great for babies, and a few different apple cider vinegar tinctures.

Please bring 3 x 250ml jars (mason jars, juice jars), 2 x amber tincture bottles along with some snax and water/bevvies with you as this will be a full afternoon of remedy making! If you don’t have jars and/or amber bottles, they will be available to purchase at in-store before the workshop. Instructor Bio: T’uy’t’tanat – Cease Wyss is a Skwxwu7mesh Ethnobotanist, and is the owner and lead herbalist at Raven and Hummingbird Tea Company.

39 EXHIBITION: VU PHOTO | CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: 2017-2018 INVENTING RISK Deadline: 5 January 2017 (Please note that it will be the only deadline for the year 2017-18)

Call for submissions 2017-18 / exhibitions, residencies, publications, special projects VU, centre de diffusion et de production de la photographie

Proposed as a stimulus for the 2017-18 program, Inventing Risk is meant to be imagined as much by the artists as by VU. Treating it as a directive rather than a theme, VU calls for proposals that will not merely represent the idea of risk, but will look to put it to work in the act of creation. We invent something when a need arises; inventing risk means to weigh it, to imagine it, to create it in order to reinvent ourselves. Taking a risk requires is a willingness to leave our comfort zone and face the possibility of indefinite results, to leave a place for experimentation, dialogue, and the unknown, and in doing so to advance ideas and practices.

After a year guided by the idea of Thinking Together, VU wants to investigate what inventing risk means for artists and for the centrethat means being willing to trust risk, but also in a larger sense having confidence in artworks and ideas, art and life.

In its mandate, VU sees photography not only as an end, but also as a means to activate research, thoughts, ideals. With the objective of affirming the role of the artist-run centre as a space for creation, VU wishes to support projects and practices of artists who wish to reflect on the ways in which we make and think photographically.

In this context, VU invites proposals by artists who will invent their own way of working with the photographic, and that will, for example: - affirm a freedom of creation; - see an occasion for photography and the photographic to exist among other disciplines; - take risks in research, as a way to pursue the work; - put together or confront ideas; - put practices in dialogue; - welcome new ideas and new working methods; - make ideas emerge or grow in the artist-run centre. Proposals will be reviewed to build a program of solo and group exhibitions, research and creation residencies (short residencies of approximately 10 days), publications, and special projects (conferences, roundtables, performances, screenings, master classes.). ** Please note that our production spacesboth digital and conventionalare accessible to members without submitting a proposal. You can contact VU's production facilities at 418-640-2558. In your submission: introduce yourself and say why you would like to work with VU (1 page max.) tell us about your projects, ideas that preoccupy you, your areas of research (1 page max.) include your CV (3 pages max.) show us images: a maximum of 20 images of the proposed project and/or recent work(Mac-compatible RGB JPEG files, max. 1024 x 768 pixels at 72 ppi) Send your submission as a .zip folder by email via WeTransfer to [email protected]

The festival developed because many audiences don't feel welcome at dance events. We want to change that. Your Dance Fest is centered around creating open communication between artists and their audience.

Traditionally when dance is presented it is chosen by other dancers. Instead, what we are doing at Your Dance Fest is inviting members of the community who are interesting in dance, but with little background in it, as our main curators. We have found that the most honest and genuine feedback about dance often comes from those who are not well versed in the artform. We want to promote this open dialogue and encourage people outside the industry to view and appreciate dance. Our curators are working alongside the artistic team to craft a festival which directly responds to the interests of the community.

Deadline: February 1st, 2017

Yukon Arts Centre together with Parks Canada and the US National Park Service have launched the 2017- 2018 Chilkoot Trail Artist Residency. This residency is a unique two-week backcountry experience for visual artists with a passion for the outdoors. The program invites artists to hike the historic route of Tlingit traders and turn-of-the-century prospectors from the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Alaska to the Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site in Canada and connect with the hundreds of hikers along the trail, while pursuing their artistic practice. Each year, three artists are chosen to participate in this cross-border creative journey - one from Canada, one from the United States, and one regional (Yukon or Alaska). As we begin our seventh season, we are proud to announce that the Chilkoot Trail Artist Residency is extending its scope and is now accepting applications from artists worldwide for the 2018 edition. The deadline for submitting applications for both the 2017 and 2018 residencies is February 1st, 2017. By creating art on the trail and leading workshops and art talks in nearby communities afterwards, the selected artists will bring contemporary art to new and wider audiences and inspire an appreciation for the legacy of the Chilkoot Trail across both nations. The Chilkoot Trail, like all Parks Canada places, reflects the rich and varied heritage of our country and provides an opportunity for Canadians and visitors to learn more about our diversity, including the history, cultures and contributions of Indigenous Peoples. As we near the 150th anniversary of Canada, the Government invites all Canadians to experience and learn more about our environment and our history. 86 SYMPOSIUM: YORK UNIVERSITY | CALL FOR PROPOSALS: DECELERATED DIALOGUES Submission Deadline: Friday, January 6th, 2017 Symposium Date: February 17th-18th, 2017, Toronto, ON

The Art History Graduate Students Association - York University is pleased to present Decelerated Dialogues, the 16th Annual Art History and Visual Culture Symposium. The Symposium theme responds to the 2016 York University Summer Institute, Slowness not Sedation, which explored slowness as an active mode of engagement within visual and art-historical practices. The 2017 Symposium will continue to explore what slowness can look like in our contemporary climate. This year's Symposium reacts to the concept of slowness through the lens of deceleration, which indicates a change in pace rather than a quality of movement. In contemporary contexts, deceleration can be interpreted to encompass topics such as sustainability, mindful artistic approaches, forms of art that encourage resistance, abstracted conceptions of reality, and escapism. By questioning encounters that cause deceleration, and the opportunities for critical conversation that emerge because of it, Decelerated Dialogues explores the motivations and stakes of slowing down.

In a time that seems factional and divided, we encourage applicants of all disciplines to submit a paper or project proposal, and take the time to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue. We are open to long-distance submissions, which may be presented at the conference via audio/video recording. Relevant topics may include, but are not limited to: Movement studies and performance art Durational degradation Counter-productivity and/or inefficiency Temporalities of social change Strategies for care Alternative curatorial strategies Mnemonic methodologies Minimalism Sustainability Time-based media Please send an abstract describing your paper or project (300 words maximum), the technical/spatial/durational requirements of your presentation, a personal bio (max. 250 words), and your contact information by Friday, January 6th, 2017 to [email protected]. Successful participants will be notified by January 16th, 2017. The conference will take place on February 17th-18th, 2017 in Toronto, ON. The venue is TBA. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Art History Graduate Students Association - York University at [email protected], or visit our website at ahgsablog.wordpress.com. https://www.facebook.com/events/959385194193382/

MEXICO: 92 RESIDENCY: ARQUETOPIA 3 RESIDENCY OPPORTUNITIES

OUR ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAMS Our Artist-in-Residence Programs offer competitive professional opportunities for emerging and mid-career, national and international artists, designers, curators, art historians, art educators, journalists, writers, and cultural researchers age 25 and over. Our programs are based on a non-exploitative model promoting social consciousness. Residents are strongly encouraged to explore various ways of cultural exchange as part of their artistic and/or research goals and to actively engage in critical discussions as part of their residency experience. Understanding Mexico’s context, and specifically Puebla and Oaxaca’s cultural complexity, is key for a successful cultural exchange. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and disciplines who are interested in creating work or inspired by art, elements, techniques or processes specific to Mexico and/or unique to Puebla or Oaxaca. Arquetopia is distinguished worldwide for its array of unique residency programs with substantial content. In contrast to various property rental schemes, tourist resorts, B&B’s, and sublets elsewhere, our residency spaces function exclusively for productive art professionals, writers, and researchers and include structured, informative programs; a network of collaborative workspaces, institutions, and studios; and individualized project support. RESIDENCY GUIDELINES • Selection decisions are based on artistic work and proposed project. Candidates at all stages of their careers (emerging and established) must demonstrate a clear sense of potential. • Our pool of applicants and residents is diverse in all aspects. • Our residency programs are competitive opportunities for artists and researchers to pursue their own work, free of pressure (especially work that in their particular circumstances would normally be difficult to produce). • Selection priority is given to projects that explore a responsible connection between the applicant’s artistic practice and the cultural context of Mexico, of Puebla, or of Oaxaca. The connection can be as broad as an artistic technique or as specific as a local theme. • The creation of community with fellow residents and staff during the residency period is important. ARQUETOPIA Founded in 2009, Arquetopia is an international award-winning, Mexican official nonprofit foundation for visual arts, music, literature, and research. Run entirely by artists, Arquetopia’s programs promote development and social transformation through contemporary art with a nontraditional, culturally diverse and multidisciplinary approach. Arquetopia’s resident artist and staff backgrounds are diverse in all aspects. ARQUETOPIA OAXACA In contributing to more focused environmental consciousness and renewing our commitment to sustainability and nature, we honor Oaxaca’s traditions by incorporating into our residency a deeper comprehension of how art and the surrounding ecosystem coexist harmonically. Arquetopia’s residency spaces continue to be open for dialogue, exchanges, and encounters while emphasizing our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, reusing materials, and recycling waste. Our alpine-style villa hosts up to four artists at a time, with sweeping mountain and city views from the artist rooms. In this countryside space, the intersection of art and nature set the tone for reflection, research and production. We welcome writers who are interested in seeking a deeper connection with the community, nature, and the environment. Artists are also encouraged to participate in diverse activities such as field trips, cycling, and hiking. Our residents enjoy a safe and peaceful environment surrounded by the mountains of San Pablo, a nature reserve of 7,500 acres with rich biodiversity. The residency center is located in the countryside village of San Pablo Etla, only 20 minutes away from the center of the city of Oaxaca on the south side; and to the north, it is only 20 minutes away from the Centro de las Artes San Agustín, an early 20th-century textile mill transformed into a spectacular arts center. Though cheap, everyday public transportation is also available from the residency vicinity into the city, Arquetopia provides scheduled transportation into downtown Oaxaca twice per week by van. OAXACA, SOUTHERN MEXICO The colonial city of Oaxaca is nestled in a valley in the Sierra Madre mountain range of southern Mexico. Oaxaca is located 450 km (280 mi) southeast of Mexico City and is reachable via three international airports: Oaxaca (OAX), Puebla (PBC), and Mexico City (MEX). With a population of 265,000, Oaxaca boasts magnificent colonial architecture, the most outstanding example being Santo Domingo church and its former convent, now home to an impressive anthropology museum. The city and its surrounding areas also feature a high concentration of native Zapotec and Mixtec cultures and archaeological sites. Oaxaca was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 for its central historic district and the archaeological site of Monte Alban. Getting around Oaxaca is easy and enjoyable; museums, studios, libraries and landmarks are all in walking distance. At an elevation of 1,555 m (5,100 ft), Oaxaca features a subtropical climate, resulting in mild-to-warm temperatures year-round. Rich in history and culture, Oaxaca is a fascinating destination where you can appreciate ancient civilizations, colonial art and architecture, and vibrant cultural traditions. MEXICAN TEXTILES INSTRUCTIONAL ARTIST RESIDENCY: WEAVING, EMBROIDERY, OR TAPESTRY Mexican textiles are the expression of Mexico’s diversity and complex sociocultural systems; through their narratives, iconographies, and techniques, they reflect a multiplicity of artistic traditions and identities. Clothing in Mexico signals wealth and power, they incorporate elements of class and gender differentiation in the process of performing and negotiating identities. Therefore the intricate language of textiles reflects a history of contention and resistance as a result of the amalgamation and negotiation of Mesoamerican and European civilizations. Textiles are also sources of information for the cultural patrimony of each community. Both weaving and embroidery are techniques used to develop complex narratives, and are important ideologically in structuring roles and identity patterns. In Oaxaca, the diversity of textiles is as rich as the natural environment. Each weave and embroidery has had a destiny, and with the complex process of assimilation and negotiation, some have disappeared or have suffered gradual or radical transformation; other have become more sophisticated in their narratives, techniques and/or coloring. This a production residency that includes master instruction (Weaving or Emboroidery: 27 hours total, 9 hours per week; Tapestry: 36 hours total, 9 hours per week) in Mexican textiles techniques. Residents learn how to use the traditional back-strap loom, including how to assemble it, and basic weaving techniques; or they learn Mexican embroidery techniques for which we offer instruction in the following: cross-stitching, chain-stitching, shading, and pepenado hilván; or they learn tapestry techniques, using the large floor loom. Each technique is offered separately. Residents wishing to do multiple techniques may apply for consecutive residencies. With three separate programs to choose from, Mexican Traditional Weaving, Oaxacan Embroidery, or Tapestry, artists join an integral program in which they learn the technique, approach iconography and traditional textile production systems with more resources, and get a better understanding of Mexican culture. WHAT THIS RESIDENCY INCLUDES Technique Instruction: • Weaving or Embroidery: 27 hours master instruction (9 hours per week) • Tapestry: 36 hours master instruction (9 hours per week) Staff Support: • Each resident meets weekly with our staff for individualized research assistance/resources, project guidance, and critiques • Our residencies are process-based; residents are not expected to give talks, exhibitions, or workshops Accommodation, Meals, and Local Transportation: Furnished, private bedroom Meals and 24-hour access to the kitchen and dining room Wireless Internet Private bathrooms with modern fixtures and showers Housekeeping Though cheap, everyday public transportation is also available from the residency vicinity into the city, Arquetopia provides scheduled transportation into downtown Oaxaca twice per week by van Studio Workspace and Materials: • Individual live/work space with natural light provided with table or desk • 24-hour access to larger, shared studio with generous natural light • Personal workspace with large table • Materials and supplies for the instructional course provided • Materials and supplies for additional project production not included but available for purchase locally RESIDENCY FEE, DATES, AND TERMS Term Length – Weaving or Embroidery: 3 weeks. SCOTLAND: 93 RESIDENCY: CALL TO CANADIAN ARTISTS COMPETITION FOR THE COVETED 2017 GLENFIDDICH ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE PRIZE

Glenfiddich® Single Malt Whisky is issuing an Open Call to Artists currently living and working in Canada to enter the internationally renowned competition for the prestigious 2017 Glenfiddich® Artists in Residence Prize.

The Canadian winner will be one of eight artists worldwide to be awarded the coveted prize to live and work at the Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, Scotland. The three-month summer residency is valued at $20,000 CDN per artist. Now in its 16th year, the program covers the cost of travel, living expenses and materials throughout the residency.

While living in crofts (traditional small Scottish farm houses), artists are encouraged to take inspiration from the unique setting in the Scottish Highlands. The experience provides an opportunity unlike any other for artists to work in an international community, share in a dialogue with other artists and foster cross-disciplinary ideas.

A distinguished jury selects from approximately 200 submissions each year and creates a list of ten finalists. The 2017 jury includes Dr. Sara Diamond, President of OCAD University; Crystal Mowry, Senior Curator at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery; Michelle Jacques, Chief Curator at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria; Kristy Trinier, Director of Visual, Digital and Media Arts at the Banff Centre; Ivan Jurakic, Director of the University of Waterloo Art Gallery; Stefan Hancherow, independent curator and Director of the 2015 Feature Art Fair, and the Canadian 2008 Glenfiddich® Artists in Residence Prize recipient, Dave Dyment.

From the shortlist, the Glenfiddich® Artists in Residence program curator Andy Fairgrieve selects the winner, who will be announced in March 2017.

“We don’t want to be restrictive in any sense in the media people are working in, or the projects they want to do,” said Fairgrieve in an interview last year. “[In 2015] Canadian artist Jon Sasaki built an aeroplane – a functioning aeroplane – which we then flew and crashed!”

Sasaki recalls that his project “sounded like lunacy on paper, but Andy gave his total support and enthusiasm. And when it was completed it still felt like lunacy, but by then I had met a whole community of other artists to help me realize the project, and thanks to a group effort it got off the ground.”

Fairgrieve underscores that, "the program's ethos is about encouraging people to take inspiration from their experience living at the distillery, whether that be the rich heritage of Glenfiddich®, the surrounding environment, or the daily life of the distillery and local community, and to be as experimental as possible – a mission our artists live and breathe during their three-month residency.”

Juror Sara Diamond adds “Through its commitment and support of the arts, the Artist-in-Residence Prize gives artists not only the monetary value of their residency but provides such a fertile platform in the lovely Scottish Highlands.”

The Glenfiddich® Artist-in-Residence Prize has sponsored over a hundred artists since its inception in 2002. Past Canadian recipients have included artists working in a wide range of disciplines, including Daniel Barrow, Myfanwy MacLeod, Damian Moppett, Annie Pootoogook, and Eleanor King, who spent her time in Dufftown last summer living without any technology created after 1900.

Online submissions open Wednesday, December 7, 2016 and must be received by midnight (Eastern Standard Time) Wednesday, January 25, 2017 (Robbie Burns day). For more information and to apply please visit www.glenfiddich.com/ca/artistsinresidence

SWEDEN: 94 RESIDENCY: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: BRUCEBO FINE ART SUMMER RESIDENCY SCHOLARSHIP (GOTLAND, SWEDEN) AND THE WILLIAM BLAIR BRUCE EUROPEAN FINE ART TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP

Submission deadline: January 31st, 2017

Eligibility: The Brucebo foundation supports emerging and early-mid career artists. Eligible applicants must be Canadian Citizens who have studied fine arts within the last ten years. Self-taught artists with less than ten years of exhibition experience may also apply.

Since 1972, the Brucebo Fine Art Scholarship Foundation of Gotland, Sweden has offered a fine art residency/scholarship to a talented emerging professional Canadian artist providing an inspiring study/work stay in northern Europe on the island of Gotland, located in the Baltic Sea. The Brucebo fine art scholarships date back to the post-impressionist era in Europe, where two young artists, Caroline Benedicks of Sweden and William Blair Bruce of Hamilton, Canada, met in Paris, married and after many years on the European continent, settled on Gotland Island. With the untimely death of William in 1906 and that of Caroline in 1935, the estate, in the early 70’s, created the Brucebo Fine Art (Scholarship) Foundation, an organization promoting island-based cultural history and fine art. To commemorate the unique Swedish-Canadian link of Caroline’s and William’s marriage and impressive artistry, two annual fine art scholarships for younger, professional Canadian artists were established: The Brucebo Fine Art Summer Residency Scholarship and The William Blair Bruce European Fine Art Travel Scholarship.

The Brucebo Fine Art Summer Residency Scholarship funds a three-month working residency – starting June 1 – at the Brucebo studio cottage in the Själsö fishing village, 7 km north of of Visby in Gotland, Sweden. The scholarship includes the use of the studio cottage, and a stipend of 50 000 SEK (approx. $7,500 CAD), which covers travel expenses from Canada - Gotland (return). The scholar also has the opportunity to extend their stay until October 1. Upon leaving the island, the artist is requested to donate an artwork made during their summer residency with the Canadian Collection at the Brucebo museum. The William Blair Bruce Travel Scholarship provides 30.000 SEK (approx. $4,500 CAD) for a European research sejourn, to be undertaken within the next year. The tour is based on an approved Fine Art-related investigative project. As a final part of the ‘travel scholarship’ the recipient must visit Visby via Stockholm. While in Visby, she/he will give a public lecture sponsored by the Foundation on the investigative theme pursued during her/his recent European travel. Deadline for applications: January 31, 2017. 98 RESIDENCY: SCULPTURE SPACE APPLICATION DEADLINE: JANUARY 31, 2017

SCULPTURE SPACE, located in Utica, New York invites artists whose focus is sculpture to apply for a two-month residency between February and November 2018. Depending on funding, up to twenty residents are selectively chosen each year with a stipend of $1,500 awarded to offset costs. We offer a 5,500 square foot shared studio with specialized equipment in addition to five private studios. The Studio Manager provides ongoing assistance and technical expertise; the Operations Manager and Executive Director are available to assist with any other special requirements. Basic understanding and communication skills in English are necessary. Three to five artists are in residence each month; artists are expected to stay for a full two months. For absences longer than four contiguous days, stipend will be prorated. Housing is provided a block away in a newly renovated residence with private bedrooms, washer/dryer, TV, internet, shared living space and kitchen. Artists are responsible for materials, specialized tools and food. Bicycles are provided; transport for materials purchase and other needs is also available. The studio and house are located in the eclectic, historically underserved, diverse and upcoming West Utica neighborhood – close to downtown, and situated in Central New York’s scenic Mohawk Valley. Because of Sculpture Space’s long history and presence in Utica, the community is supportive and receptive to site-specific work; in particular, we are interested in projects that realize and expand examples of creative placemaking to our neighborhood and the community. Artists are required to acknowledge Sculpture Space when works made while in residence are subsequently exhibited or published and must provide high-quality images of works for the website, archives and publications. In addition, we require artists donate a mutually-agreed upon artwork to be sold at our annual CHAIRity Art Auction, held every September, benefitting Sculpture Space’s programming. Since 1976, Sculpture Space has helped to support the careers and studio practice of over 500 national and international artists from around the world. As desired, artists and arts professionals (including curators and writers) are invited for informal studio visits. The collaborative environment of the studio and the communal aspects of the residence help foster dialogue, exchange of ideas, creative experimentation and both personal and professional connections. In addition to the CHAIRity fundraiser in September/October, the public is invited to Works in Progress receptions (held every few months); other visits are arranged by appointment. Accepted artists are selected by a Review Committee and guest juror Janet Riker, Director of the University Art Museum at SUNY Albany. Artists are notified early March.
