Adscrit per la crítica especialitzada en els moviments undergrouds de la vinyeta als Estats Units, és especialment conegut per obres com la seva revista Eightball en què va publicar una sèrie d'històries que després van esdevenir la seva obra més coneguda Ghost World , còmic que ha estat portat també al cinema amb guió del mateix Clowes ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKI- Krc1oA4 ) Va estudiar art a l'Institut Pratt de Brooklyn, Nova York. En acabar els seus estudis va intentar infructuosament aconseguir treball com a il·lustrador a Nova York, Entre 1985 i 1989 va realitzar tant textos com dibuixos per a la revista Cracked , on va desenvolupar sobretot una secció titulada " The Uggly Family ". El 1985 va debutar en el còmic publicant en Love & Rockets (la revista dels "Hernandez Bros.", Gilbert i Jaime) una historieta protagonitzada pel personatge Lloyd Llewellyn. Posteriorment es va publicar una sèrie de sis comic books en blanc i negre consagrats al personatge, a més d'un especial, The All-New Lloyd Llewellyn Special (1988). En 1989 va aparèixer el primer número d'un nou comic book realitzat per Clowes, Eightball . A més de diverses historietes curtes autoconclusives, Clowes ha desenvolupat en esta publicació diversos relats de major extensió: la surrealista Like a Velvet Glove Cast In Iron , (en els números 1-10); Ghost World (números 11-18), que va ser portada al cine per Terry Zwigoff; i David Boring (19-21). Tots aquests títols van ser posteriorment publicats com a novel·les gràfiques. Les últimes entregues d' Eightball són els números 22 (" Ice Haven ", 2001) i 23 (" The Death-Ray ", 2004), concebuts com a narracions independents i publicats a tot color i en format de grans mides. Clowes ha fet incursions també en el món del cine, i ha adaptat els seus propis guions per a la pantalla (és el cas de la pel·lícula Ghost World , dirigida per Terry Zwigoff el 2000). A més, ha realitzat il·lustracions per a un gran nombre de revistes, com The New Yorker , Details , Esquire o Village Art , entre moltes altres; cartells per al cine (entre ells el de la pel·lícula de Todd Solondz, Happiness ); i fins i tot dibuixos animats (el vídeo " I don't wanna grow up " de The Ramones). Random House Mondadori, 2013. 1 El Rayo Mortal / Daniel Clowes Gerardo Vilches La següent ressenya, obra del Gerardo Vilches la trobareu a Entrecomics ( http://www.entrecomics.com/?p=84107 ): 2013 no podría haber empezado mejor en lo que a cómic se refiere que con la publicación de El rayo mortal de Daniel Clowes. The Death Ray se publicó en 2004 como el número 23 de Eightball , en formato de comic book , por tanto, aunque en 2011 fue reeditado como un libro, y así llega al mercado español, publicado por Random House Mondadori, el material es el mismo, pero el formato afecta irremediablemente a cómo lo percibimos, aunque el propio Clowes ha confesado que El rayo mortal debería haberse publicado desde un primer momento como libro. Pero entremos en harina. En un primer vistazo, podemos decir que El rayo mortal es la historia de Andy, un adolescente a quien su padre lega superpoderes, activados al fumar un cigarro —una de las muchas genialidades de Clowes en este cómic—, y una pistola de aspecto absurdo que vaporiza a los seres vivos sobre los que es disparada. Andy vive con su abuelo y es un paria en el instituto, y su mejor amigo es Louie, el único con el que comparte su secreto. Con estos mimbres y conociendo a Clowes, la cuestión que se plantea es obvia: ¿Homenaje a los superhéroes de su infancia, sátira mordaz o aproximación posmoderna? Y la respuesta es que todo eso a la vez y más. El rayo mortal es uno de los cómics más complejos de Clowes, y en él tienen cabida sus obsesiones habituales y todo tipo de temas, que conforman niveles de lectura diferentes y complementarios. La idea surge de la fascinación de un Clowes adolescente por el cómic de superhéroes, concretamente por los de Steve Ditko , como él mismo ha reconocido. Y de hecho su influencia se deja notar en la composición de varias páginas y en la situación vital de Andy, que remite a Spider-man claramente. Ese modelo está presente en la historia, y como un reflejo deformado del mismo puede leerse, pero también es cierto que Clowes se aleja de forma deliberada de la búsqueda personal y el camino del héroe: no es casualidad que lo primero que haga Andy para probar sus nuevos poderes sea romper por la mitad un ejemplar de La Odisea . No hay por tanto grandes descubrimientos, ni epifanía alguna: lo que Clowes parece decirnos es que los superpoderes no salvarían al hombre de su mediocre mezquindad. Andy intenta en un primer momento utilizar sus poderes para hacer el bien , pero éste es un concepto demasiado comple- jo fuera del mundo de fantasía en cuatro colores de Marvel o DC, y más aún si le corresponde a un adolescente acosado decidir sobre él. Junto a su amigo Louie —convertido en lo más parecido a un sidekick que puede haber en la vida real—, acaba, pese a esas buenas intenciones, enmarañado en venganzas crueles, ajusticiamientos infantiles y fiascos lamentables al intentar evitar crímenes o castigarlos. Sólo es un triunfal superhéroe que salta por los tejados en sus Eightball #23: The death ray ensoñaciones. Y al tiempo, pasa por todos los trances propios de un adolescente conflictivo como buenamente puede. Todo el cómic está estructurado en historias breves de unas pocas páginas, cada una con su propio título, a la manera de lo que luego hará con Wilson . Y como en éste, en El rayo mortal Clowes ya “Cuando las editoriales experimenta con los múltiples cambios de registro en su dibujo y con la composición en función de sus mainstream se preguntan cómo necesidades: a veces la página es una simple plantilla de viñetas uniformes, otras recurre a grandes serían los superhéroes en el espacios y viñetas de presentación que recuerdan a los cómics de superhéroes y al pulp . Maneja el mundo real , la respuesta color con intenciones narrativas claras, introduce flashbacks de manera novedosa e inteligente e es Ultimates . Cuando se lo incluso juega con los globos de texto y las viñetas para ocultar determinadas cosas o buscar otros pregunta un dibujante de cómics efectos concretos, como veremos posteriormente en Mister Wonderful . Es un trabajo sofisticado en lo que no trabaja en el entorno técnico y profundo en lo temático, quizás el más maduro de Clowes, el más consciente de su propia mainstream, la respuesta es que naturaleza.     Integrity of the Page: The Creative Process of Daniel Clowes Daniel Clowes (1961- ) is a highly-regarded cartoonist, graphic novelist, and screenwriter. He is best known for his Eightball comic book series (1989-2004) and for his graphic novels Ghost World (1997), Ice Haven (2005), Wilson (2010), Mister Wonderful (2011), and The Death-Ray (2011). The Special Collections Research Center acquired Clowes’ archive in 2015. The acquisition honors Clowes’ personal ties to the University of Chicago – Clowes was born in Chicago and spent much of his childhood in Hyde Park where he attended the University of Chicago Laboratory School until 1979. His grandfather, James Lea Cate (1899-1981), was a history professor at the University of Chicago from 1930 to 1969, and Dr. Cate’s personal papers reside in the Special Collections Research Center. Clowes’ archive also anchors a growing collection of Chicago-related contemporary comics at the Library. The collection supports a burgeoning, cross-disciplinary interest in comics for research and teaching at the University. The Clowes archive contains notes, outlines, narrative drafts, character sketches, draft layouts, and more for three of Clowes’ books: Ice Haven, Mister Wonderful, and The Death-Ray. The exhibition pieces this material together, tracing the evolution of Clowes’ art from conception to production to publication. The materials on display emphasize the exceptional tangibility of Clowes’ work in an era when art can easily be made, and then unmade, on a computer. Throughout his career, the physicality of his craft has been a vital component of his artistic vision and creative process. Clowes remains dedicated to simple paper, pencil, and ink – to what he calls the “integrity of the page.” Explanatory panels throughout the exhibition are composed of excerpts from interviews with Clowes in which he articulates aspects of his style and technique.

    NACAE National Association of Comics Art Educators English 100-v: Writing about Comics From the wild assertions of Unbreakable and the sudden popularity of films adapted from comics (not just Spider-Man or Daredevil, but Ghost World and From Hell), to the abrupt appearance of Dan Clowes and Art Spiegelman all over The New Yorker, interesting claims are now being made about the value of comics and comic books. Are they the visible articulation of some unconscious knowledge or desire -- No, probably not. Are they the new literature of the twenty-first century -- Possibly, possibly... This course offers a reading survey of the best comics of the past twenty years (sometimes called “graphic novels”), and supplies the skills for reading comics critically in terms not only of what they say (which is easy) but of how they say it (which takes some thinking). More importantly than the fact that comics will be touching off all of our conversations, however, this is a course in writing critically: in building an argument, in gathering and organizing literary evidence, and in capturing and retaining the reader's interest (and your own). Don't assume this will be easy, just because we're reading comics. We'll be working hard this semester, doing a lot of reading and plenty of writing. The good news is that it should all be interesting. The texts are all really good books, though you may find you don't like them all equally well. The essays, too, will be guided by your own interest in the texts, and by the end of the course you'll be exploring the unmapped territory of literary comics on your own, following your own nose.

    Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.

    Daniel Nicolás Ferreiro Relational Genres, Gapped Narratives, and Metafictional Devices in Daniel Clowes’s David Boring Daniel Clowes’s comic books have always been characterized by their juxtaposition of different artistic expressions. Since his beginnings as a cartoonist in the mid 1980s, Clowes’s works have continually revealed echoes from films, painting or literature, blended with different forms of popular culture. Not interested in creating a realistic approach, his comic books highlight fictionality, a process that has strong implications in the development of highly experimental storylines. This article analyses Clowes’s graphic novel David Boring (1999) and its narrative appropriations of the superhero genre, embodied in the inset superhero comic book ‘The Yellow Streak’. This meta-comic book is a recurrent motif which challenges our expectations as readers. Focusing on intertextual processes of re-working already existing materials, the aim of this study is to research the different ways in which ‘The Yellow Streak’ could function within the frame of David Boring: firstly, as a superhero comic book per se, since it both follows and subverts traditional aspects of the genre; secondly, as a family biography which mirrors the events in the main story; and finally, as a metafictional comment on how a gapped narrative can be the subject of endless interpretations, requiring a sort of ‘detective work’ on the readers’ part in order to achieve meaning. Imagine trying to distil [David Boring] down to a one-sentence pitch. ‘It’s like Fassbinder meets half-baked Nabokov on Gilligan’s Island’.1 In an interview for The Comics Journal magazine, Daniel Clowes mockingly used these words in trying to define his comic book David Boring (1999).2 Although they might be too reductive of its narrative complexities, they give the idea that its plotline relies on the convergence of different genres, a process which subverts readers’expectations and shapes the plotline.

The Daniel Clowes Reader (Parille 2013) comes at the perfect time – when interest in Clowes from scholars and critics is at a high, but in which he is still perhaps given less critical attention than his peers Chris Ware, Art Spiegelman, and Marjane Satrapi, all of whom are cited twice as often as Clowes despite his large canon of significant works in comics. With recent books being published on Chris Ware by The University Press of Mississippi and the forthcoming Art Spiegelman collec- tion from Drawn and Quarterly, more significant focused, monographic books are emerging in comics and comics criticism, and The Daniel Clowes Reader is a more than wel- come addition to this emergence.     I Jewish Comics + Jewish Comics; Or, Visualizing Current Jewish Narrative Derek Parker Royal Executive Editor, Philip Roth Studies Over the past several years, there has been rapidly growing interest in Jews and comics-not comics of the Groucho Marx, Woody Allen, and Jerry Seinfeld variety, but those as presented on the paneled pages of the newspaper funnies, comic books, and graphic novels.1 In the past four years alone, there have been no less than seven tides devoted exclusively to the history and analysis ofJews and comic art, and these books do not even include the many recent com­ ics-related texts with substantive portions devoted to specific Jewish authors.2 1"Graphic novel" is a term that is not without its problems, but I am using it here not only because of its widespread common use, but also to distinguish it from comic books as a publication format or delivery system. In this sense, "comics" applies to the medium as a whole, regardless of the form it takes (e.g., the editorial cartoon, the single-panel gag, the newspaper comic strip, the comic book, and the graphic novel). Furthermore, I use "graphic novel" to refer to long-form comics-as opposed to the typical American comic book which runs 32-36 pages-regardless of genre.     Last stop: this town. Sameness, suburbs and spectrality in Daniel Clowes’s Ghost World Giorgio Busi Rizzi Ghost World, first published as a graphic novel by Fantagraphics in 1997, is to date the most famous and successful work by Daniel Clowes1. It recounts a key, yet consistently mundane, moment in the life of two teenagers, Enid Coleslaw and Rebecca Doppelmeier2. It is the summer after the end of high school and the two self-proclaimed witty, cynical, different girls have to confront with the passage their coming of age involves towards an adult life, consider moving to a new town, and face the possible dissolution of their friendship3. 1 The book won the Ignatz Award (1997) and was considered by the mag- azines Times and Paste to be among the ten best graphic novels of all time. 2 Significantly, both names mirror and redouble the identity of the au- thor: Enid Coleslaw is anagram of Daniel Clowes, and Doppelmeier alludes to a pun with doppelgänger that will be explicitly made in the course of the story. Clowes even inserts in the story a third alter ego of himself, a creepy cartoonist called David Clowes. 3 On the first paperback edition’s back cover, Clowes includes a brief syn- opsis: “Ghost World is the story of Enid and Rebecca, teenage friends facing the unwelcome prospect of adulthood and the uncertain future of their com- plicated relationship” (2001).
