There are records of glands that produce sexual pheromones that are released into the environment or applied directly on sexual partners. Within Opiliones (Arachnida), several harvestmen in the suborder Laniatores have sexually dimorphic glands on legs I and IV, the mode of use of which is recorded only in two species but their function is unknown: while walking, males rub the glands against the substrate or against their body. Here we test an alternative and non-exclusive hypothesis that the glands present on the legs of male Gryne perlata (Cosmetidae) produce contact pheromones used in mating. -

ARTÍCULO: A structured inventory of harvestmen (Arachnida, Opiliones) at Juruti River plateau, State of Pará, Brazil Ricardo Pinto-da-Rocha & Alexandre B. Bonaldo Abstract: The first structured inventory of harvestmen in the Brazilian Amazon Rain Forest was carried out at Juruti municipality, Pará State. The sampling protocol was done in three plots of (1 ha each) non-flooded upland forest, on the Juruti River plateau, nearly 60 km from the right margin of the Amazon river, and one plot in a floodplain forest area, at the Amazon river margin. To ensure assessment of the majority of potential habitats, seven collecting techniques were used, resulting in 466 individuals from 28 species. Each ARTÍCULO: upland site provided 16-18 species. Flooded forest habitat was A structured inventory of undersampled, and only five species were recorded. From the seven harvestmen (Arachnida: Opiliones) collecting methods employed, litter manual sorting resulted in the highest at Juruti River plateau, State of Pará, number of species per sample, and beating tray the highest ratio of Brazil individuals per sample. These two collection techniques, along with nocturnal ground search, were the most effective sampling techniques for a protocol for Ricardo Pinto da Rocha collecting harvestmen in this site. KuRY Escola de Ciencias Biol6gicas, Universidade do Rio de Janeiro, Rua Frei Caneca 94, Rio de Janeiro 20.211-040, RJ, Brazil Received 8 June 1993, accepted 18 December 1993 As result of cladistic methodology applied to the study of Gonyleptidae, four precocious branches are newly recognized in the phylogeny of the family. Three new subfamilies are proposed and diagnosed and a new concept is given for the Bout guyiinae Mello-Leitao 1923. Metasarcinae, a new subfamily is proposed for the Bolivian Metasarcus Roewer 1913 (formerly in Mitobatinae) and an undescribed Argentinean genus. Chaconatus Roewer 1929 (formerly in Prostygninae) is herein considered to be a new junior subjective synonym of Metasarcus. Heteropachylinae, a new subfamily is proposed for nine genera formerly described as Gonyleptinae or Pachylinae, and distributed along the Brazilian coast. Cobaniinae, a new subfamily is proposed for the genus Cobania Roewer 1913. Bourguyiinae should be the correct spelling of a subfamily name based on the generic name Bourguyia Mello-Leitao 1923. In the present new concept, four of its five genera are removed, while eight others are transferred from the Gonyleptinae, Pachylinae and Progonyleptoidellinae. To recon struct the phylogeny of Gonyleptic,lae, 16 morphological characters were analysed through HENNIG 86, providing a single most parsimonious cladogram of CI = 0. 77. The branching pattern obtained is: (Metasarcinae (Heteropachylinae (Cobaniinae (Bourguyiinae + the other Gonyleptidae))). Piresa angulispinosis H . E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The new genus Zannicranaus is described from the Andes in central Ecuador based on two new species. It is characterized by a guitar-shaped body, short sturdy pedipalpus, unique strong spiniform process in the frontal hump, sexually dimorphic basichelicerite (very strong in male), an erect spine on the cheliceral bulla and paired ventral armature on male coxa IV. Zannicranaus monoclonius sp. nov., a species profusely colored in red, yellow and green, is described from Chimborazo Province (Sibambe). Zannicranaus morlacus sp. nov., a dull-brown colored species, is the first reported harvestman from Azuay Province (Molleturo). The stylar caps, a novel structure, is described in the male genitalia of Cranaidae. Key words: Andes, Arachnida, Azuay, Chimborazo, Ecuador, Grassatores, harvestmen, Neotropics Introduction The Cranaidae are a gonyleptoid family of harvestmen with less than 200 described species, mainly found in the highlands of South America, as well as in the lower forests of Amazonia. A general treatment of family may be found in Pinto-da-Rocha & Kury (2007). In Ecuador, the cranaids are represented by the very standard of the fam- ily, Cranaus Simon, 1879, and some unique groups of genera, such as the small Yania-like highlanders, and the endemic Heterocranainae, and some Stygnicranainae, otherwise known only from Colombia. -

Castellanos-Morales Abstract A new species of troglomorphic catfish is described from de Gedania Cave, located in the middle Suárez River drainage, Magdalena River system, Colombia. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by the combination of the following characters: reduction or loss of the cornea, reduction of eyes and skin pigmentation, very long nasal and maxillary barbels (maximum of 160% and 135% of HL, respectively), nine branched pectoral-fin rays, first unbranched ray of the pectoral fin prolonged as a long filament, reaching 80% of pectoral-fin length, anterior cranial fontanel connected with the posterior fontanel through an opening of variable length and width, first dorsal- fin pterygiophore inserted between neural spines of free vertebra 13-14 and free vertebrae 33-34. The presence of troglomorphisms such as regression of the eyes, reduction of skin pigmentation and long barbels suggest the troglobitic status of this species. A comparative analysis with other species of Trichomycterus from epigean and hypogean environments is presented. -
