'J'he Latin of the Ilthica is also similar to the Sanskrit in the philosojjhical por- tions of the \'edic writings. The directness of both languages is no less amazing than the sincerity and frankness with whicJT the deepest thoughts are expressed. Hindu philosophy had reached a height of insight when the be- ginnings of western philosophy were, to all appearance, still lost in speculations about the physical world. But the precocity of India was followed by a long period of slumber, as it were, which con- tinues almost down to the present. The schools that in later years engaged in hot disputes all seem to be below the level which had been attained long ago, while the principles set forth in Yedic times stand unshaken in their Himalayan solitude. In the West there has been a continrous efifort to build up idealistic systems, to keep them intact and buttress them. The strong critical tendency character- istic of the western attitude threatened to tear down the noblest structures, the highest ideas, wdiereas in India debates were meant only for raising the highest to yet loftier peaks. Eternal truths one left untouched in their original formulation with a piety known onlv to Orientals. The short, archaic ])hrases and definitions of the L'jianishads and cognate literature, which we here make the basis of our com- parison, are still the living heritage of India, and the forms which their highest speculations assumed are even now, after so manv centuries, considered ader|uate and concise. -

MAAS ** The present paper highlights first results of a series of research projects that aim, among other things, at a critical edition of the Caraka- saŔhitā Vimānasthāna on the basis of more than fifty paper manuscripts from the northern part of South Asia. In taking a special focus on the ap- plication of the so-called “stemmatical method” to this large textual tra- dition, the paper illustrates how a well established hypothesis concerning the textual history of the CarakasaŔhitā is frequently useful — and in some cases even indispensable — in order to judge the genealogical re- lationship of different versions of the same text. The fundamental impor- tance of stemmatics for the editorial process may not, however, distract from the simple truth that in dealing with large and ancient traditions of Sanskrit texts the application of this method does not automatically result in the reconstruction of a historically correct textual version. We are not stuff that abides, but patterns that perpetuate themselves. Norbert Wiener (1950, 96) There have been many famous, and sometimes fruitful, comparisons between quantum physics and Eastern thought, but only recently has a fruitful dialogue emerged between biology and Buddhist thought. This paper engages this dialogue by examining and comparing core principles from evolutionary biology and early Buddhist thought, which taken together elucidate a more fully embodied view of our minds and selves as inseparable from the natural world. We shall first present the basic Buddhist notion of dependent arising (pratitya-samutpada) - that all conditioned phenomenon arise in dependence upon other phenomena - and examine its implications for understanding the development of species and the functioning of organisms. We shall then explore and elaborate some basic congruities between dependent arising and evolutionary biology for an ontogeny of mind. Rather than diminishing our significance as creative, spiritual beings, the radical interdependence articulated by both Buddhism and biology may actually serve to ameliorate our alienation from the natural world, and ultimately from ourselves. To the extent that they forge a view of embodied interdependence and deep belonging in the universe, they may suggest a path beyond the stale dichotomy of spirit and matter that underlies so much of this alienation. This dialogue is possible only because there has been a fortuitous convergence in the latter half of the twentieth century between early Buddhist concepts and more recent developments in Western thought. -
