Identify the ways in which cultural and social institutions shape the everyday experiences of individuals, groups and communities. Describe fundamental sociological concepts, and theories, and apply them to real-life situations. Texts There is no textbook for this class and no books to purchase. All class resources can be accessed through canvas or will be provided by the professor. Policies Student Attendance: Attendance is essential to your success in this course. I will take attendance every day and you will receive 10 points if you are in class on time and 5 points if you arrive late. There are 22 class meetings and a maximum of 200 attendance points so it is possible to miss two classes and still receive full credit for attendance. I will make accommodations for college sanctioned events (athletic contests, artistic performances, conferences) provided that you inform me of your anticipated absence in a timely fashion. An example of timely notification can be found in the tentative schedule. I will be attending a college sanctioned conference on November 5th and class is cancelled on that day. In any case, you will be responsible for material covered in your absence and for turning in any work due on the day of your absence. -

Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research Vol. 8, No. 4, 232Á246, 2006 Notes on the History of Normality Reflections on the Work of QueteletÁ and Galton LARS GRUE* & ARVID HEIBERG** *Norwegian Social Research (NOVA), Oslo, Norway, **Department of Medical Genetics, Rikshospitalet, Oslo, Norway ABSTRACT This article investigates the historical background of our present understanding of normality and the hegemony of the empirical norm. This is an understanding that is closely linked to the development of eugenics, the rank ordering of human beings, the emergence of rehabilitation and the social construction of statistics within the social sciences. The article describes how the ideas of the Belgian statistician Adolphe Quetelet and his concept of the ‘‘average man’’, together the work of the Victorian polymath Francis Galton, who coined the term eugenics, have had lasting influence on how we today conceive the term normality. In the article brief historical glimpses into the birth of rehabilitation and the eugenic practices, which culminated with the killing of thousands of disabled people during the Nazi occupation of Europe are presented. Towards the end of the article it is questioned whether our present knowledge about inheritance and the genetic makeup of human beings can support the understandings leading to the concepts of normal and normality. Introduction In most countries, what might be referred to as the empirical norm, a term coined by the French historian Henri-Jacques Stiker (1999), and the principle of normalization, have long dominated policies for and the care of disabled people. Moser (2000) has pointed out that the normalization approach is constantly counteracted by processes that systematically produce inequality and reproduce exclusions. -

What is Systems Theory? Systems theory is an interdisciplinary theory about the nature of complex systems in nature, society, and science, and is a framework by which one can investigate and/or describe any group of objects that work together to produce some result. This could be a single organism, any organization or society, or any electro-mechanical or informational artifact. As a technical and general academic area of study it predominantly refers to the science of systems that resulted from Bertalanffy's General System Theory (GST), among others, in initiating what became a project of systems research and practice. Systems theoretical approaches were later appropriated in other fields, such as in the structural functionalist sociology of Talcott Parsons and Niklas Luhmann . Resituating Erving Goffman: From Stigma Power to Black Power Abstract This paper offers a critical re-reading of the understanding of stigma forged by the North American sociologist Erving Goffman in his influential Stigma: Notes on the Management of a Spoiled Identity (1963). One of the most widely read and cited sociologists in history, Goffman was already famous when Stigma was published in 1963. His previous books were best-sellers and Stigma alone has sold an astonishing 800,000 copies in the fifty years since its publication. Given its considerable influence, it is surprising how little sustained engagement there has been with the historicity of Goffman’s account. This paper resituates Goffman’s conceptualisation of stigma within the historical context of Jim Crow and the Black freedom struggles that were shaking “the social interaction order” to its foundations at the very moment he crafted his account. It is the contention of this paper that these explosive political movements against the ‘humiliations of racial discrimination’ invite revision of Goffman’s decidedly apolitical account of stigma (Robinson, 2000, p. 318). This historical revision of Goffman’s stigma concept builds on an existing body of critical work on ‘the relationship between race, segregation and the epistemology of sociology within the United States’ (Bhambra, 2014). Throughout, it reads Goffman’s Stigma through the lens of “Black Sociology”, a field of knowledge that here designates not only formal sociological scholarship, but political manifestos, journalism, creative writing, oral histories and memoirs. It is the argument of this paper that placing Goffman’s concept of stigma into critical dialogue with Black epistemologies of stigma allows for a timely reconceptualisation of stigma as governmental technologies of de-humanisation that have long been collectively resisted from below. -

Furthermore, there are many uncertainties in the theory of Parsons. Classical math logic is often insufficient to explain these uncertainties. In this study, we explain the grand theory of action of Parsons in neutrosociology for the first time. Thus, we achieve a more effective way of dealing with the uncertainties in the theory of Parsons as in all social theories. We obtain a similarity measure for single-valued neutrosophic numbers. In addition, we show that this measure of similarity satisfies the similarity measure conditions. By making use of this similarity measure, we obtain applications that allow finding the ideal society in the theory of Parsons within the theory of neutrosociology. In addition, we compare the results we obtained with the data in this study with the results of the similarity measures previously defined. Thus, we have checked the appropriateness of the decision-making application that we obtained. Topics in Human Sexuality: Sexuality Across the Lifespan Childhood and Adolescence Introduction Take a moment to think about your first sexual experience. Perhaps it was “playing doctor” or “show me yours and I’ll show you mine.” Many of us do not think of childhood as a time of emerging sexuality, although we likely think of adolescence in just that way. Human sexual development is a process that occurs throughout the lifespan. There are important biological and psychological aspects of sexuality that differ in children and adolescents, and later in adults and the elderly. This course will review the development of sexuality using a lifespan perspective. It will focus on sexuality in infancy, childhood and adolescence. It will discuss biological and psychological milestones as well as theories of attachment and psychosexual development. Educational Objectives 1. Describe Freud’s theory of psychosexual development 2. Discuss sexuality in children from birth to age two 3. Describe the development of attachment bonds and its relationship to sexuality 4. Describe early childhood experiences of sexual behavior and how the child’s natural sense of curiosity leads to sexual development 5. Discuss common types of sexual play in early childhood, including what is normative 6. Discuss why it is now thought that the idea of a latency period of sexual development is inaccurate 7. Discuss differences in masturbation during adolescence for males and females 8. List and define the stages of Troiden’s model for development of gay identity 9. Discuss issues related to the first sexual experience 10.
