Of course, we didn't know then that the Sadat thing would come off and we still don't know how much everything has changed because of it. You should know that I was part of a New Outlook delegation of ten (which included Nahum Goldman, Pierre Mendes-France and Prof. Saul Friedlander) ~ho met briefly with Sadat pefore his departure. Institutional identification was not used in the introductions to Sadat. The office here is going to help me get hold of ·one': of the photographs that was taken at the nieeting, which at the end included Begin. Bernie is now involved in setting up some meetings for me, including either Shro,uel Katz or r.toshe Yegar and tomorrow afternoon Bernie and I are having lunch with Jim Wall who was also at the New Outlook Conference. H 've als·o suggested that we try to . get .Yegar to see Wa:p as I think it's important for Wall to hear someone fro~ the other side. Also at the conference I had a chance to talk at some length ~ith . Edith Colliver and she is very interested in the po~ · sibility of a WOlllen I 5 Dial.ogue out on the West coast. November 19, 2015 Colby College, Waterville, Maine In October of 1957, the Beth Israel Congregation sisterhood met to discuss issues that ranged from the pedestrian to the controversial. After a vigorous conversation on the value of having a gossip column in the synagogue newsletter, the women of the sisterhood turned to their attention to an issue that was as salacious as it was fantastical: the possibility of women rabbis. Even though the Reform movement had ordained one woman, Regina Jonas, in Germany before the Holocaust, she had perished with her congregation in the concentration camps, and was largely forgotten by the mainstream Jewish world for many decades to come. But on this day in October of 1957, the sisterhood leaders of Beth Israel Congregation discussed the issue in Waterville, Maine. According to synagogue records, “Mrs. George Chesner introduced Rabbi Steinberg who was the speaker of the evening. His topic - ‘Women Rabbis’.” Sisterhood secretary Esther Paikowsky recorded his remarks: “Rabbi Steinberg is definitely opposed to women following this 1 profession. One reason being that there would not be a ‘Rebbetzin (a rabbi’s wife), and since a ‘Rebbetzin’ has functional duties in a congregation, it would not do to have the husband perform these duties. Another objection is who would raise the family and care for the home, certainly a man cannot do that. Therefore a man

Sales, Reader In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in Jewish Professional Leadership and Near Eastern and Judaic Studies by Rachel Elizabeth Eisen May 2016 Acknowledgements One of the first classes I took as a graduate student was called “Half-Jews, Queer- Jews, and Bu-Jews: Mapping Jewish Identities in America,” taught by then-PhD-candidate Emily Sigalow. I went into the class intrigued by intersectional identities and I came out intrigued by qualitative research. Although I had no idea what I wanted to study for my (then still so far off) master’s thesis, I knew how I wanted to study it. This thesis has truly been a labor of love, emphasis on labor. Beyond Emily’s class, I had very little idea of what goes into sociological research, and, in my typical fashion, I dove straight in, and asked questions later. I am grateful to Emily not only for introducing me to this field of research but also for introducing me to her dissertation advisor, Sylvia Barack Fishman. Professors Fishman and Amy L. Sales, my advisors in this thesis, have offered me guidance and support throughout, encouraging me all along. I’m Janet Jakobsen and I’m director of the Barnard Center for Research on Women and this year’s Ingeborg, Tamara and Yonina Rennert Forum on Women and Judaism. The Rennert Forum brings to Barnard scholars, artists, and activists—and you will hear from all three over the course of the day—whose work promotes understanding of the complex roles of sex, gender, and sexuality in Judaism today and throughout history. One of the things that we’re hoping that this conference will do is bring forward some of the great diversity of the work that Jewish women are doing in changing America. We structured the conference in the hopes of exploring that diversity—by looking at different Jewish communities, looking at different religious communities, looking at the making of culture and how that works. And, thanks to last night’s discussion, we have a vivid sense of the wide range of communities that people are working in, both generational communities and also different racial and ethnic communities within Judaism. We’re very excited to be able to bring this diverse set of perspectives to the questions of the conference. As I also mentioned last night, the great difficulty that the planning committee had in formulating this event was how to bring forward any kind of comprehensive representation of the work that Jewish women are doing. We decided we couldn’t do that, so what we are trying to do was start a conversation.

    Special Articles The Impact of Feminism on American Jewish Life by SYLVIA BARACK FISHMAN Introduction 1 HE LIVES OF JEWS in the United States—like the lives of most Americans—have been radically transformed by 20 years of feminism. Some of these changes have been effected by the larger feminist movement and some by a specifically Jewish feminist effort. Thus, while many feminist celebrities, such as Betty Friedan and Bella Abzug, are Jews, the focus of their feminism has not been specifically Jewish in nature; they have pro- foundly changed the behavior and attitudes of American Jews as Americans and not as Jews. Pioneers of the contemporary Jewish feminist movement, on the other hand—women such as Rachel Adler, Paula Hyman, and Aviva Cantor—are primarily recognizable within the Jewish sphere. They and many other Jewish feminists have significantly altered the character of Jewish religious, intellectual, cultural, and communal life in the United States. In the stormy late 1960s and early 1970s, when the rising stars of contem- porary American feminism were publicly denounced from synagogue pul- pits as aberrant and destructive, feminist attitudes and goals seemed revolutionary. Today, however, many general feminist and Jewish feminist attitudes and goals have been absorbed and domesticated within the public lives of mainstream American Jewry. Female rabbis and cantors have been trained, ordained, and graduated from Reform, Reconstructionist, and now Conservative seminaries, and are becoming accepted as part of the Ameri- can Jewish religious scene. Life-cycle events for females, such as the "Sha- lom Bat" and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies, are commonplace. Women's organizations which a short time ago expressed ambivalence about the impact of feminism on their ranks now officially espouse feminist goals.1 'The Women's Division of the Council of Jewish Federations, for example, a group which seems to epitomize commitment to establishment values and communal survival, featured a number of feminist figures at its 1987 General Assembly in Miami.

It explores the creation of American Judaism and Jewish community; the experience of immigration; the pursuit of political activism and social justice; and changing notions of identity, sexuality, family, and leadership through the lens of women’s lives and voices. Drawing upon primary and literary texts, this course challenges us to consider how the telling of American Jewish history changes when women are placed at the center. Course Objectives: Completion of this course will result in the ability of students to: 1. Think critically and expansively about the sources of history. Whose stories get told? Whose are ignored? What kind of historical sources shape the stories we receive? 2. Grasp the central themes shaping the historical experience of American Jewish women. 3. Greenberg: Curious Daughters: Language, Literacy, and Jewish Female Desire in German and Yiddish Literature from 1793 to 1916 (Under the direction of Ruth von Bernuth) This dissertation examines the interplay of language politics and romantic politics in German and Yiddish literature confronting the challenges faced by Judaism in the long nineteenth century. The project brings into dialogue both German and Yiddish texts, from West Yiddish farces to the literature of a new German Jewish elite to the popular stories of Tevye the Dairyman. This diverse body of literature uses a concern with the sexual purity and loyalty of the Jewish daughter to encode anxieties toward Jewish assimilation into the non-Jewish world. Yet these works also share another layer of the daughter’s subversion: an act of rebellion in the form of a linguistic or cultural departure from tradition. Each of these texts depicts how the Jewish daughter’s adoption of European language and literacy operates in conjunction with her romantic transgressions. I read these works in conversation with the gendered discourse on Jewish language and the history of Jewish women in Europe; these dynamics create a framework for understanding an ambivalence toward new modes of Jewish life.

    TRACING THE CONTOURS OF A HALF CENTURY OF JEWISH FEMINIST THEOLOGY Mara H. Benjamin This essay examines the trajectory of Jewish feminist theology from the 1970s to today. It uses a synthetic, thematic approach, distilling concerns that appear across generically diverse theological writings over the last half century. These themes include the authority of Jewish classical texts and ritual practice, the meaning of embodi- ment, and the potential of theologies of immanence. The essay is framed by a consideration of the activist roots that fed Jewish fem- inist theology in its initial stages, on the one hand, and the changed conditions of production that characterize the present, on the other. Keywords: activism, authority, embodiment, halakha, immanence, Jewish feminism Feminist activism profoundly reshaped Jewish ritual life in North America. Communal leadership and worship practices are but the most visible, tangible markers of change in religious performance over recent decades. This same activ- ism also decisively changed the landscape of Jewish God-talk in the late twenti- eth and early twenty-first century. Challenging entrenched patterns of women’s subordination necessarily begged fundamental questions about the cosmic order, authority, and the human condition. The critiques of Jewish theological claims that resulted from this encounter led to an outpouring of innovative work in mid- rash, ritual, liturgy, and other expressive forms typical of Jewish theological reflec- tion. These critiques also led to scholarly reconnaissance missions to theological terrain long overlooked or marginalized within academic scholarship.
