Year 1 - 2/6/20

Hello and Owls, We hope your first day of home learning went smoothly and you have enjoyed creating some things for your ‘trip’ to the U.S.A.

Do you remember our first Year 1 topic all the way back last September? It seems like such a long time ago! We discovered and learned lots of information about Dinosaurs. Some of you were already dinosaur experts and taught us new facts we didn’t already know. The Royal Mint (not polo mints) are the organisation that creates the money we use. Each coin or note you have in your money box will have been designed and made by the Royal Mint. You might be wondering what this has to do with dinosaurs… They have been working with the Natural History Museum in to create 3 new coins with pictures of dinosaurs on them. These are very special because they are coloured and if you scan them with a special AR code scanner you can discover where and when the first was discovered. Here is a link to the BBC Newsround article all about them. https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/52874357 Can you see which dinosaur is on each coin?

We are continuing with White Rose maths. Summer Term - Week 6 (w/c 1st June)

Today’s lesson is

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/ The worksheet is attached to the class blog for you to look at on the screen - or you could print it out and fill in the answers. We hope you have unpacked your suitcase and are settled-in in New York. Today we are going to go sightseeing. The first famous ‘’ that we are going to visit can be found on this Go Jetters episode.

The - Go Jetters Go Jetters - Series 1: 7. The Statue of Liberty, USA

Listen carefully for the facts about the statue of Liberty.

Tell a member of your family what you can remember about the Statue of Liberty - use the pictures to remind yourself.

Today we want you to draw a picture of the Statue of Liberty and label it with the facts that you heard on the programme.

If you want to find out more about there is a powerpoint slide show for you to view.

American people love to play and watch a game called Baseball. It is a bit like playing rounders. A player has to try to hit the ball and the opposite team tries to catch the player out. In New York there are two Major League Baseball teams called the New York Yankees and the New York Mets.

Today you could practise throwing and catching a ball. How many catches can you manage before you drop the ball? You could use a bat to see how many times you can bounce the ball on it or perhaps you could get someone to throw the ball and see if you can hit it with your bat.

Today we want you to get out your phonics workbook and turn to the c (as in rice) page.Watch Geraldine Giraffe and Mr Thorne explain how the soft c works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZ87r4TxvO8

Then you can have a go at reading the Phonics Play comics ‘Centipede Circus’ https://phonicsplaycomics.co.uk/comic_ph5b_centipede_circus.html

Georgia O-Keefe is a famous female artist from America.

Lots of people admired Georgia O'Keeffe because it was unusual for a woman to be an artist when she painted her flowers. She died in 1986 when she was 98 years old.

Today we would like you to paint or draw the outline of a flower, close up, ready to add the fine detail tomorrow. If you choose paint today you could use wax crayon to add the detail tomorrow. If you choose pencil crayons today you could use felt tips to add the detail. Here are some examples that have been done before to give you some ideas.

Make your pictures big and bold and keep the outline simple today. Tomorrow will be your chance to make them as detailed as those of Georgia O’Keefe.
