Given the curse often associated with Idols winners in South Africa — their careers are said to seldom thrive beyond one album, many people were quietly relieved when she didn’t make it to the finals. Well, look at her career now! Her debut album, released in August last year, went platinum within weeks of its release probably because she’s the first artist to bring a uniquely South African flavour to pop music. Pardon us for rambling on about this 24-year-old musical genius in the making. Check out our interview with her on page 4. What we’re looking forward to this month: The 91st Academy Awards, otherwise known as the Oscars, will be taking place on the 24th of this month. She made the Top 32 list of M-Net’s Season 7 of SA Idols in 2011 and returned a year later sans anxiety and armed with confidence. ManyIdols SA fans were gutted when the the judges sent the then 18-year-old packing when she reached the Top 6 of Season 8 of SA Idols, saying she was still young and would, without a shadow of doubt, make a superb musician someday. True to their word, Shekhinah returned to the music scene in 2015 with two hit singles Back To The Beach featuring Kyle Deutsch and Let You Know featuring Sketchy Bongo, which became instant radio and club favourites. “I like to cater to people’s emotions as well as our frustrations. So when I went home, Durban, for the holidays all I wanted to do was chill and stay at the beach,” she told Live Mag in 2016. Since then, the humble muso has been dropping pop hit after hit, and it doesn’t seem like she will be slowing down anytime soon. Some have described her brand of pop sound as uniquely South African with its thumping beats, while others believe her simple lyrics accompanied by her angelic vocals are what sets her apart from the rest. Tom Hollander, Ben Hardy, Allen Leech, and Aaron McCusker Fans the world over have lauded the film for its underlying life lessons, cleverly embedded in the storyline. One of them being how difficult a time misfits have accepting their inner turmoil. Secondly, that despite that inner conflict, it is important to still forge ahead. An exemplary scene of Queen’s 1985 reunion at the charity concert Live Aid — one that’s often referred to as Mercury’s greatest performances of all time — takes centre stage in the film, a befitting moment as this took place at the height of the band’s stardom. Bohemian Rhapsody was sold as a Queen biopic, but honestly ended up focusing largely on Mercury’s life and other personal affairs. Certain elements in the film were strategically rearranged, supposedly, to help conceal the band’s real behind-the-curtain- Bohemian Rhapsody, the two-time Golden Globe award-winning biopic follows of-fame moments.

Development of the Global Film Industry The global film industry has witnessed significant transformations in the past few years. Regions outside the USA have begun to prosper while non-traditional produc- tion companies such as Netflix have assumed a larger market share and online movies adapted from literature have continued to gain in popularity. How have these trends shaped the global film industry? This book answers this question by analyzing an increasingly globalized business through a global lens. Development of the Global Film Industry examines the recent history and current state of the business in all parts of the world. While many existing studies focus on the internal workings of the industry, such as production, distribution and screening, this study takes a “big picture” view, encompassing the transnational integration of the cultural and entertainment industry as a whole, and pays more attention to the coordinated develop- ment of the film industry in the light of influence from literature, television, animation, games and other sectors. This volume is a critical reference for students, scholars and the public to help them understand the major trends facing the global film industry in today’s world. Indie Mixtape :: View email as a web page :: Arcade Fire apparently is in the midst of working on a new album, with writing having “intensified” during the pandemic. In spite of ourselves, we are interested in hearing this quarantine opus, even though we openly disliked their previous album, 2017’s Everything Now. Arcade Fire is also on our brains lately because the 10th anniversary of their third ( and we would argue greatest) album, The Suburbs, was this past weekend. That album, like all Arcade Fire LPs, is a mix of breathtaking musical moments and grandiose, eyeroll-inducing thematic gestures. And yet we wouldn’t want Arcade Fire to be any other way. Sometimes they miss in embarrassing fashion, and other times they absolutely crush it. But they always swing big. For this list of our 20 favorite Arcade Fire songs, we took stock of the crushes while also attempting to understand how and why they miss. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" and the Beginning of the 21st Century PS: Was this email forwarded to you? • William Carlos Williams' Indian Son(G)
The News from That Strange, Far Away Land: William Carlos Williams’ Indian Son(g) Graziano Krätli YALE UNIVERSITY 1. In his later years, William Carlos Williams entertained a long epistolary relationship with the Indian poet Srinivas Rayaprol (1925-98), one of a handful who contributed to the modernization of Indian poetry in English in the first few decades after the independence from British rule. The two met only once or twice, but their correspondence, started in the fall of 1949, when Rayaprol was a graduate student at Stanford University, continued long after his return to India, ending only a few years before Williams’ passing. Although Williams had many correspondents in his life, most of them more important and better known literary figures than Rayaprol, the young Indian from the southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh was one of the very few non-Americans and the only one from a postcolonial country with a long and glorious literary tradition of its own. More important, perhaps, their correspondence occurred in a decade – the 1950s – in which a younger generation of Indian poets writing in English was assimilating the lessons of Anglo-American Modernism while increasingly turning their attention away from Britain to America. Rayaprol, doubly advantaged by virtue of “being there” (i.e., in the Bay Area at the beginning of the San Francisco Renaissance) and by his mentoring relationship with Williams, was one of the very first to imbibe the new poetic idiom from its sources, and also one of the most persistent in trying to keep those sources alive and meaningful, to him if not to his fellow poets in India.

While digital effects are tools to assist the action performance of non-kung fu actors, Dragon Tiger Gate (2006), a comic-turned movie, becomes a case-in-point that it applies digitality to Yen, a celebrated kung fu star who is famed by his genuine martial dexterity. In the framework of remediation, this essay will explore how the digital media intervene of the star construction of Donnie Yen. As Dragon Tiger Gate reveals, technological effects work to refashion and repurpose Yen’s persona by combining digital effects and the kung fu body. While the narrative of pain and injury reveals the attempt of visual immediacy, the hybridized bodily representation evokes awareness more to the act of representing kung fu than to the kung fu itself.

  • We're Taking Africa to the World
“We’re Taking Africa to the World”: Commercial Self- fashioning as a Vehicle for Collective Aspirations in the 21st Century JAANA SERRES “It’s finally cool to be an ‘African’” (Kaumbutho). This 2017 blog post by Kenyan poet Kimathi Kaumbutho echoed the performative claims heard throughout the African middle class in the wake of the changing narrative about “Africa,” from “The hopeless continent” (The Economist 2000) to “Africa rising” (The Economist 2011). Elements and signs of “Africanness” have indeed been increasingly featured in “global” popular culture, from clothing lines to films, and even the practice of capitalism is rebranded with “African traditional principles” through the Africapitalist and Ubuntu “economic philosophies.” But as suggested by Kaumbutho’s list of achievements “Africans can take pride in,” one cultural medium has proven particularly instrumental to this new wave of positive identification with “Africa”: Nigerian music. As Nigeria was arguably entering a post-oil era in the 2010s (Burns and Owen), its renewed popular music industry benefitted from the development of digital technology and the expression of corporate interest by telecom companies, retail brands, and foreign-educated young professionals, making it an exemplary manifestation of a new pan-Africanism founded on neoliberal aspirations (Shipley Living the Hiplife). Global professional services firm PwC announced that total revenue for Nigeria’s entertainment and media industry was expected to grow to US$8.1 billion in 2019, calling it the “fastest-expanding major market globally” (Oxford Business Group). However, only a very small share of this revenue occurs from the actual sale of cultural products (PwC 22).
