  • The Evolution of Malaysian Cartoon Animation
THE EVOLUTION OF MALAYSIAN CARTOON ANIMATION Faryna Mohd Khalis Normah Mustaffa Mohd Nor Shahizan Ali Neesa Ameera Mohamed Salim [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT A cartoon can be defined as an unrealistic style of sketching and or funny figures that can make people laugh. Aside from entertainment purposes, cartoons are also used to send messages without a serious tone and indirectly telling something sarcastically. In April 2019, Malaysia was shocked by the headline that ‘Doraemon’ had been selected to represent the Japanese themed cartoon exhibition in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2020. Malaysian art activists, specifically those who has a cartoon animation background, were very upset and expressed their dissatisfaction with the news. Local legendary cartoonist Datuk Lat also showed his disappointment and made a stand that a local cartoon character should have been chosen to represent Malaysia. Therefore, this research aims to illustrate the development of Malaysian cartoons from when they first started in newspapers, until their existence today in the form of animation on digital platforms. In sequence, Malaysia produced cartoons in newspapers, magazines, blogs, television and cinema, whereby this is in parallel with the development of technology. From hand- drawn art for ‘Usop Sontorian’ to digital animation for the film ‘Upin dan Ipin’, Malaysians should be more appreciative and proud of our local cartoons rather than those from other countries. Keywords: Local identity, Characteristic, Animation, Comic, Character design. Introduction Cartoons are fundamentally known as entertainment for kids. But due to cultural values, technological development and education, our cliché perception has changed to that cartoons are actually a source of effective communication for all ages (Muliyadi, 2001, 2010, 2015).

Vme AND BRB SEAL ALLIANCE AT MIPCOM • Various productions from the Spanish company will be aired on the American channel as a first step in a long-term accord Madrid, October 15, 2014. Vme Media and BRB Internacional have just sealed at MIPCOM an accord for U.S. Hispanic audiences in the United States. The television channel, the first that broadcasts exclusively in Spanish throughout America, will air various BRB productions, including international hits, Bernard (156 x 3’), Mica (26 x 15’), Zoobabu (104 x 2’) and Kambu (52 x 7’). This is the first step in a long-term agreement between the two entertainment-sector companies that will be progressively widened in the future. In this first phase of the accord, Vme and BRB Internacional have agreed on various animation series for broadcast in the U.S. Hispanic markets in the United States – and some feature-length films, too, such as My Friend Bernard – aimed at pre-school and family audiences. The agreement includes the disemination of these productions both on Vme’s television network that reaches 70M U.S. housholds and via its video-on- demand services. Emilie Pasquet, Sales Chief at BRB Internacional, said: “We are thrilled with becoming a partner of Vme, a channel that really emphasizes the quality of its productions for the pre-school target audience in a very important market for us in the new digital panorama, both for kids and their parents.” For more information: Stand R7-H14 (MIPCOM) ABOUT VME TELEVISION: Vme TV (pronounced veh-meh), is the first national Spanish-language television network in association with public television stations.

Arizona Western College Northern Arizona University— Yuma Branch Campus University of Arizona— Yuma Academic Center ArizonaState University— ASU@Yuma Community College Changes Lives When graduation rolls around every year, the community gets a quick visual reminder of the culmi- nation of several years worth of effort. Our students are both young and old, many are parents, and most are working full- or part-time while attending college. While we have the pleasure of working with them every week of every semester, and understanding both their struggles and their dreams, the biggest part of their effort goes on behind the scenes for many people in Yuma and La Paz Counties. And yet, you benefit. You benefit when your neighbors get good jobs and can contribute to the tax base. You benefit when your company can hire skilled, productive employees. You benefit when voters in your area understand the issues as they fill out a ballot. At AWC, we also benefit when students complete their studies and accept their diploma – colleges are increasingly measured on how they prepare students to persist in school, and to complete. Arizona Western College has the highest retention and transfer rate in the state. Our students not only finish with us, but they also transfer to nearby universities, where they finish their bachelor’s degree at a rate that beats the state average for college transfers, and in greater numbers than students who went directly to a university. Winning the statistical race is not the reason we are happy, although that’s nice. We are happy because the students we work with have personal, meaningful dreams.
