TAI PO ISLAND HOUSE FOOTPRINT EDUCATION PROGRAMME – SECONDARY SCHOOL For Secondary 4 to 6 students September 2015 to August 2016 Island House Conservation Studies Centre is located at Tai Po. The building was built at the beginning of the 20th century, it is the former official residence of the District Commissioners, New Territories. The grounds of Island House are a mixture of formal English style gardens and lawns, where over 140 species of plants can be found. Island House is more than 100 years old and is declared as a historic monument under the provisions of the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance. It is now serving as an education and conservation research centre operated by WWF. EDUCATION PROGRAMME Topic Sustainable City @ Tai Po Target Secondary 4 to 6 No. of 30-38 students participants Duration 3 hours 30 mins On site field trip to understand the development and town planning of Tai Po New Town Learning To learn the conflict between environmental conservation and urban objectives development To discuss how to change Hong Kong to be a sustainable city To understand the importance of building a sustainable city Related Geography, Biology, Integrated Science, Liberal Studies curriculum Island House, Tai Po old market, Lam Tsuen River, Tai Po Town Centre, Ting Venue Kok Road (Including the Mangrove - Site of Special Scientific Interest) and Tai Po Industrial Estate. Introduction to Tai Po history and Island House historical building Activity Use tablet and mobile application to conduct on site field trip format Group discussion on building a sustainable city Schools must arrange their own coach for this programme. The coach will be used during the whole programme. Coach must have a built-in public address (PA) system. This programme will be changed to an Island House Visit if any of the above requirements are not met. Footprint Secondary School Education Programme (For S.4-6) Sustainable City @ Tai Po Rundown USTAINABLE CITY @ TAI PO is an outdoor “Education for Sustainable Development” Programme specially designed for senior secondary school students. Through visit to Tai Po new and old areas, Sites S of Special Scientific Interest and the industrial estate, students will understand the development of New Town and the changes in surrounding land use. Through investigating issues related to Hong Kong urban growth in the past, as well as the conflicts between environmental conservation and urban development nowadays, students can better understand the importance of building a sustainable city. BEFORE THE VISIT: Teachers are suggested to read through all visitor guidelines and codes issued by WWF (Attachment 2). Students should be notified about what they are going / not going to do, what to bring / dress, and be encouraged to look for relevant background information from the internet. (http://online.wwf.org.hk/booking/en/info.html?type=ST#21) PROGRAMME CONTENT: The 3 hour 30 minutes programme will be conducted with an issue inquiry approach, including an on site field trip to different areas in Tai Po district. Stopping points include Lam Tsuen River, Tai Po Old Market, Tai Po Town Centre, Ting Kok Mangrove (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and Tai Po Industrial Estate. Activities will be explored to different land use in Tai Po New Town. Approx. WWF reserves the right to alter the rundown without prior notice. Footprint Secondary School Education Programme (For S.4-6) Sustainable City @ Tai Po - Application Details BOOKING INFORMATION Date of Programme: Weekdays, except Wednesdays and public holidays Time for Programme: AM Session (09:15 to 12:45 hrs) OR PM Session (14:15 to 17:45hrs) Guidance: WWF Education Officer Group Size: 30-38 students + at least 2 teachers, but not more than 4 (except special cases) must accompany each group of students for safety and discipline control Charge: HK$50 per student, HK$50 per teacher Application Procedure: Complete the online registration and application at wwf.org.hk/schools/secondary/en IMPORTANT REMINDERS Each school may apply for a maximum of FIVE Footprint Secondary School Education Programmes. In view of the limited quota available, all applications will be processed on a first-come-first- served basis. Schools will be notified of their application result by EMAIL. Payment will be requested once the application is successful. If no notification is received one month after application, please contact WWF.
